So, you’re out to lunch with your friends. You’re waiting for your food, and you look around the table to find that all of your friends are on their phones. These days, a group of people on their phones is a common sighting in the twenty-something age group. Some of them are texting, and others are scrolling through social media. One of your friends is taking a photo of herself while pulling a goofy, unattractive face, and when her food shows up, she takes a picture of her meal. Those pictures will be shared on Snapchat and will only be viewable for one to ten seconds. After those ten seconds, nobody will be able to view that goofy face she posted. Snapchat’s temporary content is what makes users prefer it to other social media websites …show more content…
For example, they may not be comfortable with their parents or grandparents seeing photos of them out partying, but on Snapchat, a ten second video of them at a club, wont do them any harm. Snapchat allows users to post things that may not be socially acceptable on other social media websites. “people recognize the idea that ‘the internet never forgets,’ while at the same time also recognize that to be funny or cool sometimes you have to push the boundaries of what is socially acceptable,” said Mohabeer Snapchat also provides real-time content, meaning you can see what your friends are doing right in that moment. This is a contrast other forms of social media because Snapchat allows users to connect on a more minute to minute basis, leading to a seemingly more genuine connection, whereas users of social networking websites like Instagram and Facebook post the highlights of what they are doing on a less regular basis. “many people are growing dissatisfied with the lack of genuine connection with ‘close friends’ rather than limited interactions with ’near strangers’,” said Mohabeer. With new forms of social media, such as Snapchat, coming out on a regular basis, people are now moving on from
Just Mercy’s Bryan Stevenson exposes some of these disparities woven around his presentation of the Walter McMillian case, and the overrepresentation of African-American men in our criminal justice system. His accounts of actors in the criminal justice system such as Judge Robert E. Lee and the D.A. Tom Chapman who refused to open up the case or provide support regardless of the overwhelmingly amount of inconsistencies found in the case. The fact that there were instances where policemen paid people off to testify falsely against McMillian others on death row significantly supports this perpetuation of racism. For many of the people of color featured in Stevenson’s book, the justice system was unfair to them wrongfully or excessively punishing them for crimes both violent and nonviolent compared to their white counterparts. Racism towards those of color has caused a “lack of concern and responsiveness by police, prosecutors, and victims’ services providers” and ultimately leads to the mass incarceration of this population (Stevenson, 2014, p. 141). Moreover the lack of diversity within the jury system and those in power plays into the already existing racism. African-American men are quickly becoming disenfranchised in our country through such racist biases leading to over 1/3 of this population “missing” from the overall American population because they are within the criminal justice
Why meet new people when your friends are at your fingertips?
The officers were acquitted of use of excessive force and abuse. This started riots in Los Angeles that rocked our country. This was the beginning of a stigma and stereotype that would be placed on all police officers. The stigma was that Rodney King was brutally beaten because he was black. The media portrayal of incidences across the nation since 1991 only heightened the stereotype. There was a very similar incident in Ferguson, Missouri in 2014 with the shooting of Michael Brown by a white officer. The coverage for Ferguson lasted for weeks and put the police in a very negative light. The Portland Press Herald states that “many police think they’re being stereotyped as racist and brutal” (Wise). There also seems to be a stereotype within a stereotype. Besides the stereotype of police officers profiling young black men, is the stereotype that all young black men are thugs, especially if they’re in neighborhoods known for gang and drug activity. “Our country 's history, culture and social divide feed a subconscious attachment to stereotypes, even in the minds of people with no measurable racial bias.”
Last with snapchat you can send something funny but not appropertet to 30 people but you don't have to show your grandma. If i took a video and you say a bad word i can send it to Ethan,Gael,Peter and Aaryn but not grandma,Unlike facebook where you put one thing on their and everyone can see it with snapchat you chose. If you want to tag someone it wont show that video to their friends. There is a thing call your story where you can post one thing and everyone can see it once.
Stephon Clark was unarmed when he was shot 20 times when he rushed away from the officers into his backyard, although all he had in his hand was a cell phone police assumed it as a weapon but obviously it was just a “mistake” that was made by them. Furthermore, officers fired their guns without even giving him a single warning and this incident has doubted our society’s belief based on the justice and equality of black
The appreciation that they receive form others has made them more confident. In the article “Why Your Kids Love Snapchat, and Why You Should Let Them” by Rachel Simmons, it states that there is very little audience participation. In particular, there is no “like” or “heart’’ button which means that there is no way for others judge and measure our value. There was also a study that was conducted about how Snapchat may have a correlation with self-esteem. This experiment was conducted by a biological social linguistic psychologist Fem I. Nine at the University of Pennsylvania. Nine found that there were strong connections between the application Snapchat and teens self-esteem. They had over three hundred participants from middle schools, high schools, and colleges. One particular participate went into a deeper response and said, “I really feel like each one is a piece of art…that lasts for 6 seconds.” This statement implies that teens feel good about themselves when they post on Snapchat because they have taken the time to perfect the picture that they are going to
This year there's been a lot of brutalities. In fact, there have been at least 500 people killed by the police officers this year. Cell phones are gradually affecting American culture today because they are becoming a key part of everyday life. The cell phone is "?an indispensable companion that serves without favor or prejudice. It has reached into every civilized corner of the world--and often brought civilization with it. From its wires spring the words of history in the making, the chatter of daily life" ("43 Years" sc. 1). The cell phone enables individuals to communicate rapidly over great distances and obtain information like never before. People can now pick up the phone and get information on the weather, time, stock market quotations, and other things simply by dialing a few numbers. Cell phones connect the world together, to the point where individuals become almost helpless without it. The next time you find yourself waiting at a stoplight, take the time to observe the people around you. There will likely be at least one person in the surrounding cars who is talking on the phone. Even on the streets, people continue to chat on the phone. Cell phones are everywhere. One resident in Greenville, S.C. admitted that he uses his cell phone at least 15 times a day (Chany sc. 2). The cell phone is in such high use that the traditional phones in homes and offices almost become antique devices on display. Although traditional phones are still around, individuals are quicker to pick up their cell phone.
“I’m sorry I didn’t hear you. I was responding to a text message. What were you saying?” Have you ever heard this expression or something similar; we all have. This is clear evidence of how cellphones can be a very big distraction in many social settings. Some people check their cell phone first thing in the morning. It is so easy to waste time playing on your cell phone rather than doing something productive. Cell phone use, can cause harm physically, socially, and academically, although cell phones have some good qualities, advancements in technology is causing the world to gradually become dependent on technology.
He uses many cases of African American males being killed and how the killers were not punished. “Trayvon Martin’s hoodie got him killed. Jordan Davis’s loud music did the same. John Crawford should have never touched the rifle on display. Kajieme Powell should have known not to be crazy.” (130) This shows how something so small can get an African American killed. A hoodie or loud music should not be enough to end the life of another. It shows how easily the Black body is disregarded and how little it’s worth is. “our current politics tell you that should you fall victim to such an assault and lose your body, it somehow must be your fault.” This shows how society views the Black body and how it defends the people who kill African Americans. “And they would rather subscribe to the myth that Trayvon Martin, a slight teenager, hands full of candy and soft drinks, transforming into a murderous juggernaut.” (105) It is always the victims fault, not the perpetrators because society believes that the victim is always the aggressor. In reality is is not the victim's fault. Because our society almost never prosecutes those who had committed the crime, it shows how little the Black body is worth in
The open communication platform gives people the ability to exchange information quickly. People can collaborate on anything from personal relationships to business and professional topics. You can keep in touch with your family and friends or you can network your professional skills online. Social media does have some drawbacks though. Having your personal information posted online can lead to privacy problems. Hackers and criminals can access your information and use it for fraudulent purposes. You also must keep in mind that the things you post can and will be viewed by others. This can potentially lead to problems both in your personal life and your professional career. For example, you probably don’t want to post pictures of yourself at the beach on your Facebook page the same day that you called in sick to
As you can see, in a society where interacting and over-sharing online is a trend, you probably speak to friends and family through electronic devices and social media than face-to-face. Many surveys have been addressed that one in four college students and adults would spend more time socializing online than they do in person. Whenever you attend a classroom, party or club, you can see that there is someone with their head down looking at the phone, ignore the group and reject to speak in a conversation. Moreover, if they have free time in the weekend to hang out, they tend to want to stay at home and chat or text through social media. As a result, the relationships is deteriorating,
Cell phones have changed from an item of luxury to an everyday necessity for some people. Twenty five years ago, a phone was just a way to contact someone. Mobile phones have become one of the most common tools of communications for both young and old. Cellular devices have redefined relationships and social conduct, and transformed the daily lives of many individuals. Cell phones no longer function just as a communication device. Today it has many other uses. Cell phones are used for games, calculators, texting, calendars, social sites, and pictures. In addition, there are many apps that one can download on a phone. Mobile phones help us keep track of our lives.
...day. With this capability to download, post, stream, and share information at rapid speeds, children who takes snap shots and upload them to Instagram or Twitter may not understand the ramifications of a simple innocent act of posting some cool pictures for some friends to see.
Social media has token a huge step from when it first started. The more the years go by there are new trends and new technology that continues to grow. As the newer technology comes out, the younger the kids are getting their hands on the new gadgets. As a result our younger generation begins to get into the internet having their own accounts to multiple social media websites. Kids don’t realize what they can get themselves into when they get an account, it can lead them to older people (child molesters, Perverts, ect.). Since 2011, teen Twitter use has grown significantly from 16% to 24% (Pew Internet & American Life Project, 2013). These social media accounts can make it easier to cyber bully there victim. Most importantly it takes away their
