Situation Analysis and Problem Statement
Global Communications feels the pressures of the industries with trying to keep up with its competitors and watching its stock prices fall. Yet the stockholders are giving them a lot of pressure to correct the problem. They need to offer better services than what their competitors are providing to their customers. This paper will discuss the background, the problem, and the end goals.
Situation Background (Step 1)
The entire telecommunications industry has fallen into hard times due to the Cable Companies entering the competition but Global Communications has been hit hard with not just the increased competition but smaller profit margins, the costs of doing business, and have realized that they need a new strategic plan, but will need help in implementing this.
The problem is not really obvious, as one may think. It is easy to say that there is too much competition and blame outside entities for their woes. Ultimately, the real issue is GC's inability to effectively compete with new players in the market (i.e. cable companies). Often this is the secondary to a failure to differentiate their offerings from those of the competitors. It sounds as if their attempt at differentiation has been "Our Edge is People". This has two obvious flaws. First, it is in contrast with the apparent reality that their people lack the technical skills to perform the job. Second, differentiation must take the form of something that really matters to the customers. They have already identified the competitive points that seem to be hurting them (new features, televisions, computers, phone service, etc) of and it has little to do with the people. Outsourcing the support jobs may improve the people quality, but unless this is a competitive issue, it may not have a significant effect beyond the reduction in costs.
Issue Identification
o Maintaining employee morale and preventing "brain drain" to competitors, this often occurs following layoffs.
o Maintaining a working relationship with the union and making sure that Maria gets back into good graces with her boss. Maria seems to have a generally favorable attitude toward the company and she could be important.

Effective competition is widely seen as a key to the development of telecommunications services. The ability of new telecommunications networks to interconnect fairly and efficiently with existing networks is critical to the development of competition. AT&T has undergone numerous changes since its inception in the late 19th century. The McKinsey 7 S framework as applied by Pascale is recommended to manage the changes they are facing to adopt a greater competitive presence in the global economy. In conjunction with this framework, numerous other models were applied to analyse the global competitive position of AT&T. Recommendations for a revised strategy and direction for AT&T have been made throughout this document including two scenarios of how the telecommunications industry might develop towards 2000, while outlining the impact on AT&T.
This battle for supremacy over who will control the future of communication will be fought largely between the telecommunications companies and the Cable TV companies. Perhaps mergers will be sought, or some companies will be run out of business because of their inability to keep up. Millions of dollars will be lost and billions will be made, but the end product will create a closely-knit global community, able to communicate instantly regardless of language or location.
Other competitive activities included sales promotion, advertising, and product differentiation. Larger companies have a much greater financial ability to be able to invest more into advertising than a new business starting out would be able to. Shelf space and competitive pricing were two major issues that affected sales. Because they are already recognizable brands, they can afford to purchase the best shelf space. Consumers will see their products before noticing other, not so well known products.
The employees of ABC Company have identified a problem, which must be resolved. ABC employs a part-time administrative assistant whose work ethics and productivity are lacking; thereby affecting others in the organization. The employee is responsible to answer phones, take messages, and assist each department in performing various administrative functions. The position held by this employee is important, as each department relies on her input and assistance in completing their assigned tasks. The administrative assistant’s lack of follow-through and general uncaring attitude towards her work has caused her co-workers to be frustrated, annoyed, and more importantly, has led to productivity being negatively affected.
