Should Students Be Allowed to Eat and Drink in Class? We should be able to eat and/or drink in class, what we want, when we want. The main reason I feel this particular way, is because there’s no reason a person should have to go eight in the morning or before until noon or after without eating or drinking something. (If you are in high school, that is). Another one of the main reasons I feel this way is because some kids have problems involving food, such as diabetes. Another possible problem might be hypoglycemia, which, in fact, I have. Hyperglycemia is another major problem in this world. I also believe that students can focus and learn more on a full stomach. Not just because I am, in fact, a student, but because I have been in the situation where I’m hungry and I can’t concentrate on anything, except my stomach and it’s cravings for food. We’re growing kids and we shouldn’t be forced to go four or more hours without a bite to eat or a drink, except for the occasional sip out of the water fountain. I realize that a lot of teachers will think that writing from a student’s point of view, it’s beyond biased to say that student’s SHOULD be allowed to eat and drink in class, but I honestly believe that this sort of thing should be allowed. I know how hungry I get and how hungry other students must get, also. Another thing that upsets me on this topic is that when I was in high school, I would go into my classroom and not be allowed to eat or drink at thing, yet my teachers would sit at their desks and eat or drink anything they pleased. According to the Journal of Law and Health schools that have not banned junk food have had an increase in students more excited to learn because of the sugar count unhealthy foods. Looking at the evidence regarding school lunches from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), students need equal grain and protein proportions to have a healthy daily diet, and over the course of 5 years schools that don't have a healthy lunch program have had their students overall GPA almost completely equivalent to the schools that have had the healthy lunch program. Although having tremendously unhealthy school lunches may not harm your GPA it can immensely harm your health. Lots of average students health are in danger just because of unhealthy school lunches, it is very necessary that schools realize that a healthy lunch program is always a beneficial option. Scientists have found that children who have healthier breakfast and lunch get better grades and have increased brain power. Active students, or students participating in sports, can achieve their nutritional needs with this second serving. On the other hand, less active students nutritional needs are met with the serving size given to them. A broad calorie restriction will not meet the needs of all students. Allowing for greater diversity in lunch choices will, consequently, meet the nutritional needs of more students.
On campus, this problem does result in leaving students hungry. They are seen scarfing down their food after arriving 10 minutes late to class, because the cafeteria was going to close for the rest of the day. Student's stomachs are heard growling, which disturbs the class when in full concentration. Hungry students then do not pay attention in class and causes a domino affect in others stomachs growling, leaving and going between classes, and other disturbances.
Eating a reasonable breakfast is good for your health. Many studies show this. “Individuals who consume breakfast also have total daily intakes lower in fat and higher in carbohydrates than those of breakfast-skippers.” (Nicklas, 2003). This quote supports the idea that eating breakfast is healthy for you by explaining how eating breakfast will help people to make better food choices throughout the day. If people eat breakfast, they will more than likely be healthier throughout the day. It is necessary for legislation to make the change. Since social media has provided a way for people to share pictures of their food, the college diet has become something of a joke. For every post of someone’s delicious top-tier food, there’s a comment in which an anonymous student says that they’ve eaten nothing but ramen (or similar cheap, easy food) for the last 6 weeks.
In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition, they have trouble focusing on school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast, so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day.

Students learn and do their best when they are hungry, and uncomfortable! That makes perfect sense right? If you’re like most Americans, this may be one of the most ridiculous statements you have ever heard. I know I have never done anything better hungry. Many students sit through their lunch time at school because they have no food to eat because they don’t have the money to afford it, or they are not able to bring food from home for various reasons. This is why many schools have free and reduced lunch programs. But not everybody can apply for these programs; even middle class families in today’s economy sometimes can’t give their child cash every day. Times are tough, and every family is different. These are good programs, but they are not good enough. One child missing a meal, and going hungry is too many in my book. That’s why I think it should be at least a state law in North Carolina, if not a federal law, that offers free lunch in all public schools for all students, regardless of income. This way it’s simple, cost effective and easy, and nobody will be singled out, or go hungry if they do not bring their lunch from home.
