However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension”

Through various observations and assumptions, there have been conversations on whether or not overconsumption of food is an addiction. However, many have come to the conclusion that food is an addiction if it is overconsume excessively than it is necessary for an individual’s diet. Nevertheless, food addiction can create health issues that can affect an individual’s body. Ricky reports engaging in eating very large amounts of food in short periods of time in a way that feels out of control. He reports this overeating behavior occurs multiple times a day, every day. Ricky has been engaging in his behavior since college and has continued to the present day. Other than feeling lonely, Ricky has not reported another immediate trigger for his behavior. Rick describes feeling “stoned” or “numbed out” after having the extreme overeating episodes. Also Ricky reports engaging in this overeating behavior at night when he is alone at home, when he feels bored and thinking about how alone he is and wishes he had gotten married and had children. It is hypothesized that boredom can be another trigger for the overeating behavior. According to APA (2013) boredom can be a trigger for recurrent episodes of binge eating. Before going to sleep, Ricky engages in the overeating behavior to ensure that he numb and won’t think about upsetting things.
As far back as I can remember, I have always liked going out to eat. Two of my favorite restaurants are Jake’s and McDonald’s. Though both are places to dine they have their differences in their ambiance, waiting, and expense. When deciding where to go to eat, I have three things to think about. I must consider the atmosphere or where I want to go. The amount of time I have is another consideration. The amount of money that I am able to spend is a big influence.

On the other hand, cooking at home is much cheaper than eating fast food. It is always affordable, healthier and more emotional fulfillment when eating at home and cooking ingredients compare to eating out (Warner, 2015). If a person is hungry and running late or on a budget they will most likely stop at a fast food restaurant to grab a bite to eat. This is not unusual as majority of the human population eats at some type of fast food restaurant, whether it be McDonalds, Arby’s, Burger King or Taco Bell. These food places are quite common because the food is cheap, fast and easily accessible. However even though they may be beneficial in some aspects, they can effect a person’s lifestyle and cause them minor and major health problems. Causes for this unhealthy habit can be either learned or because it is the only option for some. Previously to taking this class, I had never given much thought to my eating habits. I always thought of the way I chose to eat as one of those things I didn’t need to concern myself with too heavily now because I’m a young broke college student. The way I eat is pretty similar to the way most of my friends eat and when you live away from home, that seems like the norm for people in college. However, after applying what I’ve learned in this class to my life, I’ve realized that the dietary choices I make now affect not only my current health, but my future health as well. So overall, I would say that my eating habits are pretty bad, but I’m working on making them better.
