Cassondra DeJesus Cause & Effect Final Draft If a person is hungry and running late or on a budget they will most likely stop at a fast food restaurant to grab a bite to eat. This is not unusual as majority of the human population eats at some type of fast food restaurant, whether it be McDonalds, Arby’s, Burger King or Taco Bell. These food places are quite common because the food is cheap, fast and easily accessible. However even though they may be beneficial in some aspects, they can effect a person’s lifestyle and cause them minor and major health problems. Causes for this unhealthy habit can be either learned or because it is the only option for some. There are many causes for this bad habit that can be fixed with just a bit of effort and knowledge of the habit’s effects on one’s health. One cause for eating fast food habitually is that people may have learned this habit from their parents or someone close to them. They may have grown up in a household where eating at McDonalds or Taco Bell was an every night type of thing. Habits in general are usually picked up from family or friends that they are in contact with frequently and unhealthy eating habits are no exception. When a family tries to eat healthy food it becomes pretty costly, for example spending thirty dollars on healthy food wouldn’t get an average family of four very much food to eat seeing as fresh or organic foods are ridiculously priced, but spending twenty dollars on fast food would feed them all as well as make them full and may even leave them with extra money to buy more food. One out of every three Americans is obese and the majority of these obese people in the United States have eaten regularly at fast food restaurants. As the obesity rate increases, the number of fast food restaurants goes up as well. Although it is not certain, many believe that obesity in the United States is correlated to eating fast food. Since the United States has the highest obesity rate out of any country, it is important for Americans to monitor the fast food industry that may be causing obesity. With the pressure to get things done in a timely manner, fast food became a big necessity. However, when creating fast food restaurants, the industries were not thinking about the negative effects such as obesity. Other than obesity, other harmful effects exist as well. Fast food restaurants serve unhealthy products such as greasy foods and artificial meat that lead to dietary health issues in many adults and children. A recent study showed that “Young children who are fed processed, nutrient-poor foods are likely to become unhealthy teenagers, and eventually unhealthy adults. Now twenty-three percent of teens in the U.S. are pre-diabetic or diabetic, 22% have high or borderline high LDL cholesterol levels, and 14% have hypertension or prehypertension” (May, Kuklina, Yoon). The food that they provide is made to be eaten quickly, causing problems for the digestive system. Also, the health problems lead to the use for health insurance, which adds to the costs of Medicare. Health care costs will only worsen an already failing economy. Therefore, the government should regulate fast food restaurants in the United States in order to repair the deteriorating health and economy in America.

To explain more on this issue I found an article that connected to my points citing, “Children who rely on fast food may tend to have parents who do not have the means desire or time to purchase or prepare healthy foods at home. The author, Klausner drew attention that because parents are so busy and tied up with work , there is no possible way that children can stay healthy. Previously to taking this class, I had never given much thought to my eating habits. I always thought of the way I chose to eat as one of those things I didn’t need to concern myself with too heavily now because I’m a young broke college student. The way I eat is pretty similar to the way most of my friends eat and when you live away from home, that seems like the norm for people in college. However, after applying what I’ve learned in this class to my life, I’ve realized that the dietary choices I make now affect not only my current health, but my future health as well. So overall, I would say that my eating habits are pretty bad, but I’m working on making them better.
