Based on my results of the Seven Habits Profile, I believe my leadership style is centered around being able to inspire others in the team to share the collective vision. I am able connect with team members and influence them positively through demonstrating empathy and understanding of their concerns and thoughts. I am able to build excitement and motivation in the team bringing everyone on board with the organization’s goals. If we were to take a look at my results of the Seven Habits Profile, you would see that my highest scoring sections were Emotional Bank Account, Think Win-Win, Synergize & Sharpen The Saw. This relates to the ability to constantly try and improve on oneself in different aspects of life. In terms of professionally, I am constantly trying to push myself forward through a thirst for learning. One most relevant example of that is my pursuit of an MBA in my field as I noticed that I had flaws and gaps in my experience and knowledge that can be filled in through such a degree. Another category that I scored highly in was Emotional Bank Account. This category relates to having and showing empathy and concern for others on the team. As a team leader, I always try to put myself in the shoes of team members, and how decisions may affect each one of them. At the same time, through trying to stay positive and create a comfortable culture in the team, I try to never speak negatively of anyone on the team as showing respect to others makes the team members more comfortable to openly share and express their opinions without any reservations. A third category that I scored highly on was Be Proactive. As an optimistic individual, I always try to look at the positive attributes in things and people. I also realize, that we have a great deal of control on the things that surround us and having a mindset to try to shape our surroundings to how we best see fit. The Seven Habits Profile is divided into nine categories. The first two categories are considered foundational habits, and the remaining seven categories are considered the Seven Habits. I thought a great deal about my answers as I worked through my Seven Habits Profile. The profile has provided me with insight into my strengths and weaknesses. My scores range from fourteen to seventeen with eighteen being the highest achievable score. Meaning, I scored outstanding in five categories and very good in four categories. The results indicate that I am a very good leader however, there is room for improvement. I can utilize my assessment to become a more effective leader.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.

My style of leadership according to the quiz by Cherry (n.d.) is participative leadership which is a type of leadership that engages the members of the team to participate in decision making and problem solving while the leader makes the final judgment in the deliberation process. This style of leadership allows members who are experts in their fields provide input to reach a more effective and accurate decision. This fits exactly into my leadership style. I always believed that in every aspect there is a greater or lesser person than you are, so, why not focus on the best in others and tap on their expertise in knowledge or skill to get the best results.

As a college basketball player, I learned that being an effective leader did not mean that I had to be a constant bundle of energy. Rather, I realized over time it is more important to understand your teammates and what makes them tick, and to translate that knowledge into separate leadership styles to match each individual. After completing the “Leadership Style Questionnaire” and analyzing my results, I have learned what my preferred leadership style is and how that influences how I lead and may be perceived from members of the group. From the results attained from the questionnaire, my preferred style of leadership is directing. This type of leadership style is best for individuals who have a low competency and high commitment level. These types of leaders are highly focused on tasks and less focused on relationships. They make decisions without consulting with the group and communicate without regarding the group’s concerns or suggestions. This type of leader also supervises the followers intently. They are very successful in creating objectives for each follower and the group as a whole to guide the group in reaching a certain goal.

I have had the opportunity to work with leaders of different styles, and by just watching them, listening to them and seeing how the staff reacts; I can gauge what is productive with their staff. I try not to copy or mimic their style and ensure my own style comes through in being consistent, authentic and genuine. I feel by following these traits they give me necessary foundation and help me towards achieving leadership excellence.
The first characteristic, a positive attitude, is important because having the ability and enjoyment of working with other people in a team is a useful skill. A sincere liking and respect for other people is a wonderful asset. Being well liked will certainly help in working in teams or any other social situation. Humor and warmth are effective in order to be a good team member. A follower who focuses on positive thoughts by filtering out negative ones is on the trail of leadership. President Dwight D. Eisenhower often said, “No pessimist ever won a battle.” People who have a positive outlook on both life and specific situations tend to achieve their goals more often. The choice and determination to maintain an event-tempered disposition come what may; hence the ability to smile in the face of adversity and make things a little brighter for everyone.
Overall, no matter what category we put stress in, it is always going to be a part of our lives. Either as a motivator or as problem that gets in the way. Cataclysmic events, personal stressors, background stressors, they are happening all around us and the only thing we can do is cope with it all. Once we know how stress affects us in our relationships and everyday lives the easier it is for us to cope with it all.
Away to solve that would be to find a middle point where everyone is satisfied some what. As far as being a better leader would find a way everyone can have a big responsibility versus myself taking over completely. As a team member I deserve an 8 out of 10.
