Self-Determination in the Basque Country
The Basques, settled on the Franco-Spanish border, are a people who do not have a country that exists as an entity of its own. They are not recognized internationally. Their borders are not respected, and their culture is repressed. Thus the history of the Basque Country is one of contentious protest against imposed conditions, unremitting effort in defense of its identity and a relentless search for a means of democratizing public life. They have not been able to practice or pursue the right to self-determination as stated in the international covenants on human rights (above) and the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Peoples from Algeria, July 4th, 1976, that, “Every people has the fundamental and inalienable right to self-determination. It defines its political status in all freedom, without any external foreign interference."
Spanning approximately 20,000 square kilometers, with three provinces in the “north” under French rule, and four provinces in the “south” under Spanish rule, the Basque people enjoy a strong sense of pride in their culture. This pride stems mainly from their unique language; the true essence of Basque identity. Its roots trace to before the invasion of the Indo-Europeans, around 4,000 years ago. Therefore, it is the oldest known language in all of Europe.
The Basques have struggled to keep language as the cornerstone of their culture. However, under Spanish rule this has been greatly challenged, especially in the 20th century. The Basque people are entitled to self-determination. They have been persecuted and discriminated against for long enough. Their language and their culture deserve to be respected and protected. If this does not occur, attacks will continue, their anger will fester, and all their passion and frustration will perpetuate more violence, completing the circle, only to start again.

While reading this article, one of the most shocking sections was when the students were talking to Monzó and sharing their outlook on their place and their language’s place in society. These students, even at this early age, are feeling how devalued their first language has been. They feel like they have to speak the right* English, only use English in public places, never their first language, and that they must assimilate to the American culture as much as possible. This reminded me of a chapter in Lippi Green (2012)’s text. Within this chapter, Lippi-Green (2012) discusses how in the United States Spanish speakers are not only expected to learn English, but they are expected to learn and utilize the right* English determined by the majority and assimilate entirely to American culture.

She is instinctual and anxious. Her emotions take over constantly and create bad situations.
Cheech Marin’s film, Born in East L.A., spotlights many key issues brought upon mainly by immigration. This comedic production hits the hearts to many because while it may be humorous, it is also a reality to hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and so it hits close to home to many. Immigration is the main topic of this motion picture, but I want to focus on one subdivision of it only; language. The linguistic barriers in between a border is evident in the movie and especially a reality in our world.

The Basque Country is a region located around the west end of the Pyrenees mountain range on the coast of the Bay of Biscay . The Basque Country is comprised of the Autonomous Communities of the Basque Country(Spain), Navarre(Spain), and the Northern Basque Country(France) . The Basque people largely consider themselves to have a separate identity from the rest of Spain; they have their own language, culture, history, territory, industry, and ancestry. From their perspective, they aren't really Spanish and want this recognized. Some people though, went to extremes to express this independent feeling and that is where the conflict started.

Catalonia stateless nation has many years of history dating back to Before Crist era. They were once rules by kings and now have a president. Catalonians have tried before to have their own nation but been denied, but trying again for independences, November 2015. The physical features of Catalonia are mountains, rocky coast, beaches, and fields for aquaculture. The history of Catalonia started in the early B.C. The Carthaginians and Romans founded Barcelona, and then Romans took over Spain. The politics of Catalonia was once ruled under Franco, but Catalonia was granted independence in 1979, and got to speak Catalan
