School Spirit LeeAnna Sweeney What is school spirit and what does it mean to you? What exactly is school spirit? Do you believe that your school has enough school spirit? Do you think it is biased between different sports and the boys and girls? Also, do you think you school community as a whole shows enough spirit? (53) To start off, what is school spirit? To me, school spirit isn’t just painting yourself in your school colors, and not just wearing your school shirts. You can cheer other people on. You can tell them you’re proud! You’re excited for them for their accomplishments! When you tell someone good luck and show them you care, it gives them more confidence. They may try harder knowing there are actually people rooting for them.
I come from a magnet school that is blessed to have a large number of extremely bright students that are very dedicated to their studies, a must because of the difficult curriculum involved. The community is a very strong one with many of the students going on to do great things, which has given me the inspiration to believe that I can do whatever I want in life, as I see others who are well on their way. Within this community, I have been able to form strong bonds with other students who have similar interests and ambitions. We are able to push each other to learn new things and, through a mix of competition and collaboration, are able to truly progress in many ways, pursuing excellence in both our scholastic and extracurricular endeavors. I believe this has made me a better person, inspiring me to take on a more demanding schedule and to help others when they struggle, because they help me as well. On the contrary interscholastic sports can be character to the sporting events in town. Students act dumb and they end up doing something to earn respect back to play. However building character is something all the sports for school the students shouldn’t act immature and actually be mature so the school can build its character on the sport, so people come and watch them play. On the other hand the students need to keep the grades up to participate to play in the school
Cheerleading is an important tool for promoting both genders’ self-esteem. In an article by Lee Purvey in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Giannia Kustra expressed how cheerleading helped her as a person to “become more outgoing” (Purvey). In high school, cheerleading gives students an opportunity to support their teams proudly, build teamwork, and improve character and work ethic (Bernstein). This new “business” helps to improve the spirit and morals of athletes and fans alike.
Discipline is important in maintaining a positive classroom environment and influencing a child’s development. During my field experience at S.H. Elementary, I have observed Mrs. Branson using various techniques to reinforce positive behavior in her 3rd grade classroom. Mrs. Branson’s teachers 3rd grade in a charter school located in the south suburbs of Minneapolis. Her class consist of 23 diverse student learners from various racial, ethical, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Each student acquires individual wants and needs, and exhibits a range of behaviors. Mrs. Branson practices operant conditioning techniques to acquire the good behavior she wants and needs from her students.
Wayne State University is known for its vast diversity amongst its student body. Everyday some 27,000 students from all walks of life attend Wayne State. One of the key factors behind the WSU’s wide diversity is the fact that the majority of it’s students are commuters. While many would think that this factor would result in low school spirit, this is not the case. Recently this diversity has begun to build as unique culture of school pride. One of the key areas where this has been affective is sports. In 2015 alone both basketball and football experienced record numbers in attendance. Thirteen has been striking people's fears for thousands of years. The fear of thirteen is formally known as triskaidekaphobia. Studies show that 10 percent of the earth's population is afraid of the number thirteen. Friday the Thirteenth is a superstition that people believe in, it is known that Friday the Thirteenth is an unlucky day. Most people will not travel or refuse to even get married. Some hotels do not have a room thirteen. Thirteen can affect people and their daily lives. Triskaidekaphobia is a common fear amongst humans. The movie and day, Friday the Thirteenth, is why most people are afraid of it, but traumatic experiences could also be the cause.
When one is questioned if they think someone they know that is or has been bullied the answer is easy. There has been no shortage of cases of bullying in schools all across America. The use of superior strength or influence to intimidate and typically to force someone to do what one wants has become an epidemic. It is causing fear in schools with nowhere to get support. Bullying can happen to anyone: tall or small, male or female, and the stronger or weak. It can affect sleep pattern, work ethic, depression, and stress. Bullying in schools has become an increasing problem however; it can be reduced by laying in place parental awareness programs, teachers working with students, and policies and rules known by all student and staff.

After walking for around the area for a while, I came across a small table with only two girls attending it. Who wouldn’t like a pep rally? Not only do you get to miss class, but you get to dress up in fun spirit wear and scream your little heart out. The entire community plays an essential role in the growth and development of children within our community. As a school leader, building an inclusive school culture that is open and friendly to all stakeholders using a variety of effective methods is crucial. There is no magic formula to incorporating a positive school culture, much depends on the leadership of the campus. The leadership on campus cultivates the climate providing support and respect for everyone invested in the student’s education.
Maintaining a positive attitude is the key to success in life. However, a positive mindset alone is useless unless it is coupled with dedication, perseverance, and desire. Positivity, if coupled with these other traits, can allow you to surpass adversity, impediments, and personal goals. Negative attitudes, oppositely, can detract from achieving success because a negative mindset can often lead you to losing sight of the goal or giving up easily. Last year, I was diagnosed with a virus called mononucleosis ("mono") -- symptoms of which include chronic fatigue, sore throat, and fever. When you compare schools from the 1800’s and today, you will realize how things have drastically changed. Some believe that the public school system today has taken a turn for the worst in the past years. Students have more than just tests and quizzes to worry about. They are faced with violence, drugs, sex and pregnancy, and state mandated tests that will tell whether they will pass to the next grade. The public school classroom today has more children which takes away the personal attention to each individual student. Parents have showed less interest in their children’s education because they have worries of their own going on at home. Teachers are bound to a schedule for teaching everything that is needed to know before the tests. Funding for certain classes like music class has not been available for students and has been taken away. In my research, I have come to believe that putting more stress and pressure on the students have made them only give up or to care less. We are taking away from students and giving them more stress. There are many reasons for a child to act out at school. I believe that talking about the different stresses like bullying, peer pressure, drug and alcohol abuse, family stress, and the stress of the mandated tests would build a better understanding on why I believe we are failing children today.
School uniforms have become more common nowadays than before. They used to be worn in private schools only it was very rare to go to a public school and see students wearing the same designated outfit. But not everyone is fond of wearing uniforms to school, many people see it as teachers and school administration taking away the rights of self-expression from students. But that shouldn’t really matter because kids and teenagers go to school to gain knowledge and be prepared for the real world not to show off their new pair of shoes to other kids.
School culture can be positive or negative depending upon the school circumstances. Positive school culture foster trust, collaboration and improvement while Negative school culture foster distrust, isolation and lack of change.
