School lunch meals can be absolutely repulsive. Although it may be more expensive to hire more workers, cafeteria food should offer more diverse food options to students because students may be restricted from eating cafeteria food, much of the cafeteria food tends to be unhealthy and student happiness will increase. Much of the food at the cafeteria is inaccessible to students due to religion and other beliefs. Although many religions have restrictions on food, schools typically do not have to accommodate students since students have the option to bring their own lunch from home. (Jade Yeban) Forcing students to bring lunches rather than providing what they need feels cheap and lackluster. Students should be able to choose foods that they want and not …show more content…
Instead of relying on pizza or chicken sandwiches, schools need to focus on making a balanced meal for students. Students will be much happier with higher quality food options. High quality and healthy food during school hours affects both our physical health and academic performance. Eating food is not just about getting something in one’s stomach; one needs to at least somewhat enjoy it. With a lack of care put into school lunches, students may feel sickened with the food served to them. If students are given meals that are delicious, they will feel more motivated to get through the rest of the school day. To be clear: it will be more expensive to hire more workers to serve students. With the small budget that schools have, it is not surprising that they wouldn’t want to hire more servers. However, they can cut down on costs in other
Schools are meant to give our children a healthy and nurturing environment, and yet so much of the lunches in schools are fattening; does this stop schools from achieving the aforementioned goal? Childhood obesity in the United Sates continues to be a growing problem despite so any new programs to help combat it, and new research is showing how schools may be playing a large role in childhood obesity. School lunches are showing to be the problem, they encourage poor nutrition in our nation’s students, and simple reform is proving to not be enough to stop the rise in obesity rates.
We all remember that day when President Obama took office, and our school lunches changed forever. First Lady Michelle Obama, felt that too many American kids are overweight, so she thought she needed to make our school lunches healthier, with more fruits and vegetables. One of the major changes she made was how many calories the school cooks were able to give the kids. The new requirements are as follows: up to 650 for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, 700 for sixth through eighth graders and 850 for high scholars. These numbers are consistent with the Mayo Clinic’s recommendations ( Kuczynski-Brown). The main goal of cutting calories and taking away junk food, was to insure that kids are getting served a healthy lunch. At each lunch, schools must still provide a cup of fruit, a cup of vegetables, two servings of grains, two ounces of dairy, and a cup of fluid milk, so that students can get their needed vitamins and nutrients (Anonymous) . They are also wanting more local farmers to be involved, and give more of the food they grow to the school. At the high school I went to, we built a green house, and planted a garden to give us some local grown food. It was part of our Ag Science class. More and more schools are starting to do the same thing. The stats of overweight kids is really high. The guidelines are as follows:
But, if they do not like the food served, they won’t eat so they starve for the rest of the school day, which can lead to not focusing on class, feeling sick, and eating too much at dinner. The final reason our school should get a new lunch menu is because there are many problems with the food. For example, many students say the food is cold, fake, and disgusting. Students, Jordyn Gilbert and Leah Gelik, found mold on the lettuce in the salad.
“Our Schools need to start teaching kids how to be healthy.”- Unknown. School lunches have created a chronic problem in a school setting, and since it hasn't been fixed, 6-11 year olds have had a 17% increased chance of becoming obese (Centers for Disease control and Prevention). Most school districts don't even bother changing the food restrictions just so they can please their students. Unhealthy school lunches are a huge problem among children in the United States, it can cause obesity, stress, and many other problems.
If schools serve lunches with whole grains and protein, the students would stay full and attentive much longer than a student with a lunch of sugar, white bread, and lush greens. Although many believe that schools should provide a healthy lunch for students, there is a small percentage who feels that because of the budget cuts, schools should not pay for more expensive and healthier food. Shereen Jegtvig, a nutritionist, wrote "Appleton, Wisconsin replaced their regular poor-quality school lunches with healthy fresh food.changes resulted in improved behavior.... ... middle of paper ... ... 1.
President Harry Truman initiated The School Lunch Program (NSLP) in 1946, it was established under the National School Lunch Act. The program provides nutritionally balanced, low‐cost lunches to more than 32 million boys and girls each school day.The NSLP ensures the nutrition, portion, and safety of our children food, over the years do to the rise of childhood obesity the The USDA School Lunch Program is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our youth. Many concerned citizens, such as Eric schlosser author of Fast Food Nation believes that the USDA is not providing our children with the right nourishment. Many parents are taking it into their own hand and creating and joining advocacy groups. It is crucial that our youth receive nutrient
4 out of every 5 schools in the United States do not meet the current USDA standards in place for the fat composition that is included in the student lunches.(Vittana) Even though the country is trying to get students healthy lunches, not all are meeting the criteria for school lunches. But that is because not all schools can afford having to buy fresh food. All schools should meet the standard so schools should try to make their lunches as healthy as possible.
Thirty one million kids nationwide eat school sponsored meals twice a day for a hundred eighty days and on average for twelve years. In this sense school lunches are an important and critical component of childhood nutrition and development. Yet these meals are highly processed and filled with chemicals and preservatives. School lunch rooms are essentially fast food restaurants; they unload shipments of frozen food then heat it up in glorified microwaves and serve it hot and ready. This is the same basic principle of fast food restaurants and people all know how terribly unhealthy fast food is for them. Still America feeds this toxic material to kids every day. This has been a tremendous issue for years but it is more devastating now than ever before.
School lunch is an obvious problem that has yet to be fixed. Mark Samuelsson once said, “We struggle with eating healthily, obesity, and access to good nutrition for everyone. But we have a great opportunity to get on the right side of this battle by beginning to think differently about the way that we eat and the way that we approach food.” A well know fact to almost all students and their parents is that there are many problems with school lunches and it needs to change. Not only is school lunch unhealthy, but it also does not taste good most of the time. Some people feel that school lunch is not that big of a deal so it should be very cheaply processed in factories and preserved, but that is not the case. In order to solve the lingering
When the United Sates federal government set new regulations on what schools had to provide for lunch for their students, a lot of people weren’t pleased with what was happening. Especially when students started complaining of hunger after having had their school provided lunch. With the new regulations, the price of lunches went up. The new rules made eating lunch from school more expensive and it made it clear that most students, especially elementary, won’t or refuse to eat the healthier foods. Obviously, the school systems were going to need to find a way to ease their students into eating the healthier foods that they now needed to offer. The federal government used Michele Obama to promote eating healthier and getting active, but the program for healthier school lunches was called a failure after some time. There are so many things that people could say about the new rules regarding school lunches, but all of those things would result in nothing. When our government set these rules on school lunches, there was no fighting what was currently happening and no going back on what we were accustomed to.
School cafeterias are another place for unhealthy foods. Most schools have fast food sponsors. Some school lunches are not that good or cooked right. Some school lunches are not that healthy either, or not that good for the digestive system. Cafeterias should have better selections on the menu.
“First, students who do not have a lot of money can be more sensitive to school breakfast than school lunch” (Leos-Urbel, J., Schwartz, A. E., Weinstein, M., & Corcoran, S. 2013). Some families are not able to pay for both meals, especially if they have multiple children, even with reduced meal prices. Second, children may be hesitant to participate because they view school meals as being ‘just for poor kids’. Third, school meals are not super appealing because of the rules to make them with high nutritional standards and their low quality because they feed lots of children in short amounts of time. Some schools have fast food restaurants and vending machines available for lunch, and that can rival healthy school meal options.
Schools should switch to healthier lunch providers. It’s worth the price, even if it may be much more money than the less healthy alternatives. Students don’t eat the garbage they are fed now, and the companies that provide them their food are dishonest and in no way concerned about the students’ health. (“Students”) Healthier lunches have been proven to make students happier, smarter, and nicer. Healthier lunches are an important choice.
Imagine your school cafeteria plans to change to a new, healthier school lunch menu, which would eliminate some students’ favorite cafeteria foods. Schools strive to make students each healthy and change their bad habits. Most of the time healthy food do not taste as good as unhealthy food. Although it would be healthier it would be a bad idea because the students wouldn’t eat, they would get upset at the school, and they would dread coming to school.
Why is this a problem? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, more advanced lunch system should be implemented. First of all, students aren’t motivated to eat unhealthy, not-tasty food.
