Imagine your school cafeteria plans to change to a new, healthier school lunch menu, which would eliminate some students’ favorite cafeteria foods. Schools strive to make students each healthy and change their bad habits. Most of the time healthy food do not taste as good as unhealthy food. Although it would be healthier it would be a bad idea because the students wouldn’t eat, they would get upset at the school, and they would dread coming to school.
Students would not eat lunch if they changed the food to a healthier content. If they take out students favorite menu items then they will not eat lunch. If they take out students favorite menu items then they will not eat lunch. Although healthy foods would benefit students in many ways it will not help if they will not eat it. If we could get students to eat healthier that would be a break through, but we cannot just change it all of a sudden. We have to gradually change the lunch and make it healthier so kids will continue to eat. Some students might not get much to eat at home so when they come to school we need to make sure we have food they will like and will eat. On the behalf of myself I believe if schools start to use healthier ingredients many students will start to dread lunch time.
Students will begin to dread coming to school after the new lunch menu is changed. Students will start to pack their lunch and avoid eating school lunch all together. But the people that do not have anything to eat at home will be the ones that will suffer the most. They will have no choice to eat nasty foods that they do not like. food. Many people could argue that having healthy lunches would benefit students in the long run. Many people would say that healthy lunches might help students develop good eating habits. Although these may be valid points it will not help the children if they refuse to eat. Sometimes the things that are better for a person does not mean that person will be willing to partake in it. Schools should not change students lunch menu because the children would not eat, they would have bad attitudes toward the school, and would dread coming to school. If students do not eat lunch they will not focus on their schoolwork or be active and lively in different activities. A change in the menu would lead to students becoming disrespectful towards the staff and teachers at the school. Many would pack their lunch and those that could not would dread coming to school. Healthy does not always mean better. Think of the children.
Having different food can affect a child health. There are milky ways, cake, cookies, pizza and lets just add some French fries in there and call that lunch. Don’t forget the drink sweet tea, pop and milk that one doesn’t choose to drink it. The students would go back to the class rooms after twenty minutes and be hungry at the end of the da. Garland said, “Instead, we allow school cafeterias to dispense the same junk food that kids could buy in any mall” (621). There has been so much junk food and soft drinks in schools that makes the student health unsafe and a distraction to their education. With that being said when I was in high school it was nothing but junk food for three years. When Michele Obama changed the law on the school lunches my senior lunches have changed. This doesn’t help kids focus in the classroom for hours after consuming these fatty and sugary foods. The kids will get a sugar high but then crash hours after and won’t be focusing in class but instead, falling asleep during an important lesson. Anita states that, “school cafeterias, of all places, should demonstrate how a healthy, low-fat, well-balanced diet produces healthy, energetic, mentally alert people,” and teaching this at high schools is the best place to change the food because in this generation, kids are becoming overweight and unhealthy because of all the “junk food” they are eating. We cannot have a school lunch reform where the needs of all students are not met. If only some, or less than the majority, of students are receiving the nutritional values they need, we need to adapt the reform to further achieve better standards for school lunch programs. For example, after a student finishes their meal, schools could offer a second serving of protein to their students. In effect, this will add a higher amount of calories to the students’ daily diets.
Although there is a risk of upsetting people who are not worried about the health and wellbeing of today’s youth with selfish reasoning for wanting to keep junk food, ridding schools of junk foods will prove itself to be very beneficial. Why is this a problem? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, more advanced lunch system should be implemented.
