A person is born, and every single second after that is spent changing and evolving into a new person. Time and change are like best friends; you cannot have one without the other. Change is inevitable if there is to be a continuance of time, whether the change is desired or not. As time goes on, things change, and education is no exception. Long ago in the past, there was no education. People became conscious of how bad this was and created a schooling system. Ever since that time, the needs and wants of students everywhere has led to the gradual change of education in many ways. These changes can even be seen in the short amount of time between fifty years ago to now. The experiences while in school for elders of today and current students …show more content…
In the nineteen sixties, the time my Grandma went to school, women had to wear an outfit with a “skirt accompanied by a blouse, and men had to wear khakis and a polo or button-down t-shirt”. Contrary to that, school dress codes today enforce gender-neutral regulations on what to wear. At Sherrard, the handbook requires that students must wear sleeves and that pants/skirts go down to the ends of a person’s fingertips (or mid-thigh). There must also not be any inappropriate or graphic images and words displayed on any article of clothing. Dress codes have become equal for all genders and are less restrictive, which is a change for the better for the education of the youth. Unbiased rules like dress codes will not make a certain group of people feel singled out and can consequently focus more acutely on their education. While the physical aspects of dress codes then and now are on opposite ends of the spectrum, they are quite similar in the enforcement and punishment facet of dress codes. In the sixties, dress codes were enforced by detentions, having an immediate change in outfit, or being sent home. The way the administrators …show more content…
Education is a prime example of change as time has gone on. By learning about how an education from fifty years ago has changed compared to now, a student can learn about what they are privileged to have and about what is given to them that students before did not have access to. This information will give a voice to the kids of each generation, and provide them with the necessary knowledge to make informed and helpful decisions for their society and for the world. The future lies in each and every student and child on Earth, and information is the key to them realizing their potential. Transforming insipid children who are oblivious to the world around them into adults who possess understanding and acknowledgment of their world and the role they play in the surrounding environment should be the goal of all role models and educators everywhere. Next time the world seems to be in a crisis, stop and remember how this world can become better, and spread the wisdom and knowledge to the kids of the Earth and guide them to making this world one that is safe and exceeds the previous state it was in
During this class I have been able to explore more into the world of education and through different videos of how education has changed over time. Today, I will be discussing the video “The Bottom Line in Education 1980-Present” and how education operated during this period. I was given the opportunity to understand how schools in the United States were functioning from 1980 until how schools are functioning now. The documentary talked about different topics concerning the impact of the educational system with how it has to be changed with things such as the curriculum of what the children are learning.
Change in Education Education has always been at the core of our society. Education, along with society, continues to not only teach the young community, but model us into so-called “civilized citizens”. A civilized citizen, is one who continues to behave and move along the path of human advancement. As a student, the educational system will teach you the following: what to do, how to act, and how to think. Coming from a student’s perspective, schools are becoming more military-based.
The author continues to explain the two points he learned, and because of those points, he made his school a casual place. The dress code he established only proclaims to be “neat and clean.” The author saw no problem until the attire came so close as to be dressing at the beach, so he conducted a meeting with his staff and decided something should be said. When the author wrote the work dress guidelines, he got the input of the teachers and what should be expected by each guideline. However, the author only sent out the draft to people who had worked with him for fifteen or more years, so the question arose that the world is changing and he needed opinions from younger teachers.
I disagree with the school dress code because it doesn't allow people to express themselves, people can't dress for the weather, and it doesn't let people choose how they want to look because it's supposedly a distraction. The dress code is "The bottom of your shirt must at least meet the top of your pants or shorts, and undergarments should not be exposed. There must be a substantial covering over both shoulders. See-through clothing or clothing that is so very tight that it draws attention to oneself are also unacceptable. Shorts/skirts must have at least a 4" inseam."
Dress codes can be deceiving as Laura Bates claims her view on school dress codes, “ While the principle of asking students to attend school smartly dressed sounds reasonable, the problem comes when wider sexist attitudes towards women and their bodies are projected on to young women by schools in their attempt to define what constitutes smartness”(Bates, 2015) Within this she is supporting school dress codes, but only to an extent. As soon as the dress code is later seen as sexualizing woman, and what they define as ‘intellectual looking’ she adds certain standards to her claim of supporting dress codes. Now laura bates seems to receive the short end, but other parents seem enlightened when it comes to school uniforms and dress codes. “With uniforms parents and students feel that students are seen for who they are and not by what they do or don’t wear”(McEntire, n.d.). Those who find dress codes beneficial, see the satisfactory within a school uniform, by how the true characteristics of students are seen through actions rather than appearance. Some teachers, and school faculty also see the positive side to school
Many people think that school uniforms are a thing of the past, however this is only partially true. According to Wendell Anderson research analyst and writer for the ERIC Clearinghouse on Educational Management, says that in the 1950s and 60s “dress codes prohibited girls from wearing slacks [and] stipulated the length of girls’ skirts. One school rule that I think should be changed is the dress code. Some things on our dress code should be changed. Such as fingertip length shorts, shoulders not being able to be shown (tank tops). Some schools are even beginning to banned leggings and yoga pants. Since I think these should be changed, I will be explaining all of my reasons for each dress code mistake.
Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions.Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. However, opposers disagree with the restrictive code because of its limitations on individuality
Dress codes are restrictions on clothing that students are required to follow. The schools set them in place to try to generate a safe learning environment. However these dress codes have went to far. School dress codes have became so strict that they are taking the attention away from the academics and placing them on the dress codes. Students complain about the dress code and not being able to find clothes that fit the requirements.
We see stories Social media has more stories of girls being sent home because of dress code violations. Maybe the problem isn’t the students, but dress codes in general. Dress codes ultimately disrupt the pursuit of knowledge for the students, encourage gender bias, and can be dangerous. If we want the younger generations to succeed in the education system, we should utilize school uniforms. Uniforms in schools from elementary to high schools, will promote gender equality and facilitate student safety.
It’s important to know how education was in the past and how it is now.
In an age of rapid change due to so many technology and innovative advances, a revolutionary change in the educational system is as vital as what our next energy source is. Education is the most powerful wealth in the world and it demands more attention, and where better to start with than out youth. The school system will soon go out of date due to the information highway and information availability if there isn?t a dramatic change in the way things are run in our domestic institutional facilities. The reason why college was such a success in the 20th century was because books were all of a sudden available to students on university campus. Now with internet, a student could specialize their profession solely with the computer with the click of a button. Something needs to be done to smoothen the rigid gaps and cracks in the school system before the technological pace at which we are advancing decides to bring the whole thing down.
Education is a vital part of society. It serves the beneficial purpose of educating our children and getting them ready to be productive adults in today's society. But, the social institution of education is not without its problems. Continual efforts to modify and improve the system need to be made, if we are to reap the highest benefits that education has to offer to our children and our society as a whole.
An education system was developed in order for every child to be able to know basic skill sets before having to be on their own. This is a way to partially guarantee that the general populace of a society is educated on all the same basic functions. It allows a society to run more efficiently and effectively if everyone knows a standard amount of skills. Surprisingly, basic education for all is a relatively new system. Before the 19th century, education was only reserved for the rich, white, upper class.
Educational Revolution Some sociologists even speak of an 'educational revolution'. Driven by a combination of increasing demand for a highly skilled and professional workforce and a growing supply of educational institutions, teachers, etc., educational participation and educational attainment grew spectacularly from one generation to another. Secondary school education quickly became the minimal standard of qualification for almost all youngsters. And from the seventies on higher education participation started to increase as well. This process hasn't reached its limits yet.
