Ninety-four percent of students who took a survey do not see a point to wearing collars and many say the strict dress code negatively impacts their learning. Fifty-two students and eighteen teachers answered the seven survey questions online about Johnstown's strict dress code. Multiple students commented about how the dress code is uncomfortable which is distracting. The strict dress code negatively impacts students and their learning, so the dress code should be changed to just make sure the students clothes are appropriate. Sixty-two percent of the students and teachers who took the survey said that they feel the dress code interferes with their freedom of speech. As professor Ruth Robinson says in strict dress codes have gone far beyond safety concerns,"courts often decline to find mere style conveys a message, a rather anomalous conclusion given that the school dress codes seem predicated on prohibiting styles precisely because they express something: disrespect, sexuality, rebellion, or even fashionableness (Robinson, pg. 1,2017)Many people say that freedom of speech only pertains to ideas but, many students express their beliefs, opinions and their ideas through their clothing. Students are not allowed to have any logos or writing on their shirt which causes them to not be unable to express their opinions on their shirt. In the article School dress codes are necessary and constitutional it states, "the court concluded that the students' interest in expressing themselves through clothes was outweighed by the schools attempt to create a safe and peaceful environment. (Daniels, pg.4, 2005)." The quote proves that the dress code violates students right to express themselves through clothing. Some students especially students who love fashion pick their outfits to show people who they are as a person. People who love fashion love to express themselves through their clothing like newspaper writers express their opinions when they write a newspaper
