Dress Codes In Schools

All around the world there are dress codes everywhere. From work to school, the mall and museums. The purpose of dress codes are to keep the workplace professional and friendly. In some places because of religious beliefs, you can only go to certain areas if all of the skin on your body is covered up. Dress codes are there for a reason and have a very good purpose. It would be awfully weird to see your teacher in a bathing suit wouldn’t it be? Dress codes help keep the environment you are in comfortable and professional. Schools have a big issue with dress codes, and it seems to be pointed directly towards females in a lot of cases. Dress codes tend to put the blame on the victim, sexulize young women and dress codes can even interrupt a students learning. But how can

something that is for the better, do all of this?

What do you see?

Most of these clothes are capable of getting dress coded in schools all across the world. The real question is why? Why would a school ban clothing that young girls are introduced to everywhere, from television screens and magazines to the store where they buy their very own clothes. The answer is that some of these clothes are “distracting and hard for the other kids to pay attention”. Well its the other kids fault for starring at someone else other than the teacher. Students should understand self respect, and to respect others around you. A girl is not a toy. If they want to wear a tank top in the summer why not? The boys do it, everyone is equal so why do the girls get punished? The males get distracted and the victim wearing the “distracting piece of clothing” gets in trouble for something someone else should have been taught respect and manners! All girls want to do is feel good about themselves, they might feel pretty one day after being sad and depressed about themselves for a really long time, but then they get told to change. It doesn't make them feel good about themselves anymore. You shouldn't get punished for being yourself, for wearing what you want, for being

you.

When a teenage boy walks around school with their pants almost of the ground, does anyone feel that the females in that area will get distracted and not be able to concentrate? What about when a teenage boy is assaulted or is delivered unwanted sexual attention, is anyone concerned of how much skin he was showing? When a teen girl walks around with her bra strap showing is their concern that the boys and males in the area will get distracted and be unable to concentrate? Or when a girl is raped how many people are curious to know what she was wearing? You know the answer to all of these questions because you always see girls having this problem. Of course every girl wants their share of being called sexy and pretty, but when a girl wants for something they ask for it using their voice, not by the way she dresses. Her clothing is a part of her that makes her who she is and makes her feel good about herself. Heres another question… What is the difference between a bra strap and a belt? Think about it. A bra strap holds up a bra that covers breast, and a belt holds up pants that covers butts. So what is the big fuss about students getting kicked out of class for a bra strap showing?

Suspensions and getting kicked out of class are two of the things that may happen when you get dress coded. Imagine walking into your class a week before your big end of year exam. The teacher tells you to change because your tank top is too reviling and distracting, but you don’t have any clothes. You get sent to the office and miss out on that whole day of school, on that whole exam review. All because of what? You were wearing a tank top in the summer while it’s hot enough to roast a marshmallow? Not only have students been kicked out of class, but also received 3 to 5 day suspensions because of how they responded to the dress code.

Dress codes are needed in most places so people will dress properly for the environment they are in. It is important to have them in schools so young teens actually wear clothes, but they need to loosen up on their rules and start realizing that it is the 21st century and fashion is what it is. Girls should be able to wear what they want, and not get blamed for something they are wearing, get sexualized for what they wear and they should be able to learn in the clothing they choose.
