Imagine a school hallway packed with a variety of students flowing in and out of class. First, everyone is wearing a neat selected navy polo with either a khaki shirt or pair of pants. Looking around, mot one hair out of place nor a piece of skin poking out. Not one person standing out. Next, a group of classmate with a contrasting mindset. Shorts, crop tops, pajamas, and leggings with an accomping t-shirt. Which hallway is more appealing? Uniformity or Uniqueness? This is the argument and decsion schools across the nations are faced with today’s teens. With the situation at hand, dress codes in schools. Some people might say schools are a place of professionalism and the children within them should exude this behavior. As said in a New Jersey …show more content…
Yes, some people may fight that students need to follow authority and learn to deal with stress and rules like in the real world. But this may seem too overruling for a school setting. Schools alread have rules and regulations for students to follow. With a dress code, school might just feel like a prison where the authority decides every decision and action made for it’s “inmates”. The same New Jersey Middle School’s dress codes states in bold, “Attire should not be outlandish or extreme aas to create a disturbance of the education enviornment. Any type of clothing that does will not be acceptable,” (JSMS). For this statement to be bolded solidifes the same strict, unconstitutional attutide that teens rebel against. Also, decifering what outfits fit this tight mold can put extra, preventable stress which is not needed in a teen’s chaotic schedule. Teens can have next week’s midterm, tomorrow’s championship basketball game, or even important college application on their minds. The anxiety and pressure of being targeted for being dressing “innappropriately” and having to face a negative consequence like a, “…warning letter…[and/or] disciplinary action,” (JSMS) seems extreme for what is on a student’s body for a couple hours. A dress code seems out of proportions for schools and
Ever wonder what it would look like to have all students wearing the same white polo shirt, black pants, and a district sweater walking in the hallway? Nowadays, public school and many districts are discussing the possibilities of enforcing the uniform policy. In most places, many private schools already require students to have their mandatory uniforms; however, there are only a few public schools adopting this mandatory school-uniform polices as one of their enrollment requirements. The reason why not all public schools participated was because people believe that they are violating the freedom of choice when enforcing this mandatory uniform policy; yet problems such as bullying and segregation, emerged in these schools. Some people still think uniforms have no benefits at all. However, all public school students should be required to wear uniforms because it would improve the academic performance, reduce the violent behaviors based on appearance judgment, and provide less stress for both parents and students.
The Dress Code is also to help from distractions like weird, strange clothes, it often distracts the students from learning. Not only that, but in High School there is large groups of gangs, and they can’t wear clothing that represents them and wear anything offensive, because then less violence will occur.
According to greatschools.org, “Enforcing a strict dress code can place the focus of school on clothing and rules, rather than on education.” Most schools have specific uniforms that a child must wear in order to attend. Many children that go to school, have single parents and / or more than one ...
Bates, Laura. "How School Dress Codes Shame Girls and Perpetuate Rape Culture." Time. Time, 22 May 2015. Web. 18 Feb. 2016. In this article, Bates argues that today’s school dress codes are sexist and leave a lasting impression on young girls. Bates explains that there are several cases where girls are being punished for their adolescent bodies being distractions to boys. Also, it can teach a young girl that her body is dangerous and that a young boy automatically has the right to sexually diminish and harass adolescent girls in schools. This thought process is what causes a stigma later in college, declaring that when someone is sexually assaulted on campus, the person was asking for it. This can be detrimental to a young girl, and can even
“Dress codes and school uniforms increase school safety by eliminating gang-related clothing and helping aid in the recognition of nonstudents on campus. Other potential benefits cited include better student behavior, more resistance to peer pressure and improved emphasis on academics. About one in four public elementary schools and one in eight public middle and high schools in the USA have policies dictating what a student wears to school.” (Ellis)
Parents and their children are constantly arguing about the way students dress in school. This debate has become a national conversation which has been going on for more than a decade. However, there still hasn’t been a final resolution. The questions “Why do I have to wear the uniform today?” or “Can I wear this t-shirt because the color matches with my school t-shirt?” have become part of our everyday lives. Before we go any further, we have to understand the difference between uniforms and dress codes. A uniform is simply a garment worn that is the same in all cases and at all times. Whereas, a dress code is a set of rules regarding the required manner of clothing in a certain context. For instance, a school might not allow students to wear
Dress code enforces the modest dress of students, preventing bullying and distractions.Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. However, opposers disagree with the restrictive code because of its limitations on individuality
America’s school systems seem to have many issues concerning students receiving a quality education without distraction. A current debate argues weather a dress code policy is efficient or takes away from student’s expression. Administrators at schools should regulate a dress code policy because the system improves discipline and student’s attention, reduces social conflict and peer pressure related to appearance, and dress code provides a more serious learning environment.
Every weekday morning during the school year, I wake up in order to get ready for school. I eat breakfast, board the bus, and hope my day will be a good one. Once I exit the bus and enter the school, I am unpleasantly greeted by girls hanging out of their shirts along with boys' behinds falling out of their pants. Immediately, my hopefulness evaporates and is replaced with disgust. As I get past those crude sights, I witness a fight due to one student bullying another based on the unfashionable and plain clothes he wears. My day that was supposed to be great has been disturbed again. I know that I am not the only person troubled by these almost daily sights. Therefore, in order to achieve a less distracting workplace and help eliminate violence, Perry Meridian High School (PMHS) needs to implement a stricter dress code.
Nahashon Kariuki Sophia Learning English Composition II May 17, 2024 School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies: Adopt or Abolish? The debate on whether to adopt a school policy has been examined since the early 1950s. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, the majority of school districts in the United States reexamined their school dress codes to curb the growing gang activities and considered policies that required dress codes or uniforms in public schools. It was not until 1996 that then-President Clinton endorsed the idea of public school uniforms while speaking at the State of the Union Address. In the article School Dress Codes and Uniform Policies, authored by Anderson, Wendell (2002), debates what students should wear in class.

Inspiring Creativeness in a Uniform World School dress codes are a confrontational topic between board officials, parents, and students. How does clothing have such a massive effect on an educational institute? Shouldn’t the focus be on education, and not on the students clothing choices. Let the students be who they are in a learning environment, and let them portray their personality. We are a spoon fed generation, and many adults try to shelter their children from things that they need to learn before they enter the real world.
If you had a chance to change the dress code policies, would you do it? Many students have seen dress codes as a problem that is unfair. Although, some students do not have an opinion on the dress codes. Except, some people do not understand why schools decide to have the policies. It is important to know why schools have dress codes, the benefits of them, and the thoughts and opinions from the community because they are used daily for children.
Choosing what to wear for the day. This is what most students are thinking about when they wake up. Students need the latest fashion in order to fit in, but some clothing may not be acceptable to wear in school. School dress codes are denying students their right to dress how they want, but the dress code is important for the students and their learning. Students are beginning to stand up and want to be heard. Some students are taking action and want the dress code to become less strict but some schools are doing the opposite for safety issues and for the students healthy learning environment. Ninety-four percent of students who took a survey do not see a point to wearing collars and many say the strict dress code negatively impacts their learning. Fifty-two students and eighteen teachers answered the seven survey questions online about Johnstown's strict dress code. Multiple students commented about how the dress code is uncomfortable which is distracting. The strict dress code negatively impacts students and their learning, so the dress code should be changed to just make sure the students clothes are appropriate.
