School Uniforms: Longest To Get In The Way Of Education

School uniforms take uniqueness away from children, are costly, and tend to get in the way of education. Initially, school uniform policies were created to reduce bullying and decrease discipline issues; however, these policies have some pointless rules. We are made to be diverse, so why do school boards want to force us to be identical. The entire uniform includes shirts, belts, pants, socks, undershirts, jackets and shoes. The specific details that the policy calls for make the entire school uniform expensive. Dress code violations may also occur, which in turn, may get in the way of learning. The school uniform debate has pros and cons, but I am opposed to school uniforms because children are not able to express individualism, it’s more expensive for families, and can hinder children’s education. …show more content…

Some school faculty enforce the dress code more than others. Those who implement the dress code are likely to write up students for violations. The write ups lead to detention which often lead to suspension. When a child gets suspended they are not allowed to go to school. While unable to be at school, they are missing out on learning and are not able to make up any work missed. Sarah Kizis quoted a parent who stated that school systems should not be worried about the students’ attire, rather they should be concerned with teaching those who have difficulty reading and writing (18). In the end, silly dress code violations may cause students to not learn. For example, my high school’s dress code policies stated that uniform shirts must have no more than three buttons. When I was a student, I was written up for having a shirt with five buttons, not having my belt on, and because my socks were too short. These three dress code referrals caused me to miss several classes due to being in detention. If school uniforms would not have been a policy for my old high school, then I would not have missed all of my work that
