Are School Dress Codes Actually Necessary For School?
Students were asked if there was less gang activity after uniforms were enforced, only 41% of students said there were less gang activity. School uniforms are more strict than dress codes (“Do Uniforms Make Schools better”). More than half of K-12 schools have dress codes.Most school boards established dress codes to prevent distractions, promote a safe environment, and set standards for how students dress and what is appropriate (“Should Schools Have Dress Codes”). Dress codes teaches teenagers to be ashamed of their bodies and to cover up. Dress codes promote body shaming. Women should be able to wear what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful (Sunseri). Having a school uniform represents the school, and of the person’s values, beliefs, ethics, traditions and identity and general image that the school maintains (Wilkin and Aardt). Schools take away students’ right of free expression, and students outfits should be functional for school, dress codes and having a uniform are not necessary for school.
School authority takes away students’ rights of free expression. As the Supreme Court stated “Students don’t shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gates” (“Should Schools Have Dress Codes”). School Administration feels that they can overpower the students and the law, but that is not true. If students would fight back and revolt dress codes, dress codes would not be a thing anymore. Given rights are being taken away from students, “Dress codes and uniforms policies deprive students of fundamental freedoms” (Wendell). Students are forced to be at school and if the school authority want to take away students’ rights then the students should have a chance to stand up for what they believe in. Girls like be able to select their level of comfort each, and every day, “And all women should have the freedom to wear what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful” (Sunseri). Every single human wants to feel like she belongs, and they want to be able to select one self clothing to show their personality. Students should be allowed to dress however one self chooses, “Overall, students should wear something thst makes them feel good and comfortable. This will ensure that they are able to learn effectively” (Seri). Students want to be able to feel comfortable in their own bodies, but uniforms restrict how oneself appear to others. Clothing should be managable on a daily basis, “School uniforms need to be easy to care for when it comes to washing and ironing, as life is quite busy today, in addition to, the fact that many learners have only two sets, and sometimes only one set of school clothes, which implies that the uniform sometimes needs to be washed at night and must dry quickly and be ready to wear again the next day” (Wilkin and Aardt). Since students are required to wear the same uniform every single day, the uniform should be functional for daily wear.
