Scheduling Classes, Athletic Events, and Extra Circular Activities
We are all given 24 hours in a day and in an organized system each hour is given a category or name. An Athletic Director has many responsibilities in managing a department that has many activities occurring each day. These activities are physical education classes, practice schedules and locations, meeting special needs students, coordinating game schedules for each sport, and finding time to mentor those within the department. Each area presents its own challenge to synergistically work with the available facilities that are available. Therefore, to be effective in creating a physical education program and athletic department, it is imperative that the athletic director is organized in his own schedule to meet the demands of each area of the department. The following essay will outline what a well-organized physical education program and athletic department looks like from the eyes of a current athletic director through a personal interview and current peer reviewed journal articles.

Physical education instruction for students today is vital to the overall health and well-being of each student in our schools today (Jensen, 2003). Proper scheduling can be difficult as there are many demands on athletic facilities as they are used as multipurpose facilities to hosting athletic events (C. Within this paper I will be discussing a research based Physical Education curriculum program known as SPARK P.E. SPARK stands for Sports, Play, Active, Recreation, for Kids and it strives to help improve the lives of young and adolescent children through exercise and fun activities. Coaches who put their team and players first, are coaches who value each and every one as a person (Yanity, 2011). A good coach will teach life skills along with developing each player’s athletic talent (Yanity, 2011). With athletic participation at an all-time high, coaches have become an important element in the education of student-athletes (Yanity, 2011). It is important for coaches to have moral and ethical behavior in all phases of their lives as young men and women look to these role models for guidance.
Some activity clubs we provide include, dancing, running, jump roping, basketball and soccer clubs, just to name a few. These clubs encourage kids to stay active. Our PE program also sends out monthly newsletters to the parents that give them ways to help their child live a healthy lifestyle. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education states, “Regular physical activity improves functional status and limits disability during the middle and later adult years. Physical activity contributes to quality of life, psychological health, and the ability to meet physical work demands. Physical education can serve as a vehicle for helping students to develop the knowledge, attitudes, motor skills, behavioral skills, and confidence needed to adopt and maintain physically active lifestyles. The outcomes of a quality physical education program include the development of students’ physical competence, health-related fitness, self-esteem, and overall enjoyment of physical activity. These outcomes enable students to make informed decisions and choices about leading a physically active lifestyle. In early years children derive pleasure from movement sensations and experience challenge and joy as they sense a growing competence in their movement ability.
