I am a high school softball coach and a high school social studies teacher. The reason why I am coaching softball is because I love softball and would like to teach other people about the sport I love. One day I would like to see the girls I coach love softball as much as I do. Softball is not the only sport, but it is a part of my life and it is the game that I love. The reason why I would like to teach social studies is because social; studies is my favorite subject and I would like to teach my student how many people risked their lives and died forming our country. The history of softball started when softball was invented in 1887 came about at a football game. It was first a boxing glove and then it was transformed into an “indoor baseball”. …show more content…

In May 1932, Fanny noticed that there was no actual league for softball, unlike her male counterparts. So she helped to create the Provincial Women’s Softball Union of Québec, she served as the president. This league is a huge deal, currently many softball players in Quebec and Ontario alike have played under them, either on a team or a tournament. This league was revolutionary at its time, it allowed many girls from all over Quebec to finally participate in softball. The PWSUQ was one way Fanny established herself in the community of sport. Another way was her journalism career for the globe and mail through her column “Sports Reel” she was able to defend women’s sports. It wasn’t uncommon for male writers to write in and express negative opinions of women in sport. Fanny was witty and always had something to say back to them. As insignificant this may seem it was actually a very important event. Through her column Bobbie was able to change the perspectives of many men and women alike of women in
Though the practices performed within softball literacy do not immediately seem as if they should be considered a literacy practice, according to two of the six propositions about the nature of literacy, it is. Not only does it involve the physical performance from a play, but also includes formal writings, new rules and regulations, and offer different rules in different countries. I think softball should be counted as a literacy practice because it appeals to Barton and Hamilton’s propositions and includes artifacts that make it a community and artifacts that provide the players with essential people skills.
While some people prefer the slower action of softball, others prefer the faster action of baseball. The game of baseball is male dominated because many males prefer the faster, harder baseball since it makes the game more of a challenge. On the other hand, both males and females play softball which uses a larger ball, that is slower pitched and, therefore, easier to hit. Many players feel that softball is safer than baseball because it does not involve a hardball travelling at high speeds at the batter.
Over the past fifteen to twenty years women's fastpitch softball popularity has continued to grow and spread internationally. By the mid-1990s it was played in more than 85 countries under the eye of the International Softball Federation (ISF). It has become increasingly popular among women at the youth and collegiate levels. More than 630 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member institutions sponsor women's softball programs, and national championships for women are held in all three NCAA sports divisions (Encarta, 1998). In 1991 women's fastpitch softball was selected to debut as a medal sport in the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Columbia, Georgia. The U.S. won the gold medal in the 1996 Olympic Games due to a good defense and great hitters on the team. Even though defense and pitching are critical and vital parts of the game, a successful team must have an effective offense to win the game. Among all the standout hitters on the U.S. Olympic team, two of the best are Dot Richardson and Lisa Fernadez. Both Lisa and Dot have picture-perfect swings, which have made them very productive throughout their careers. Today there is a women's professional fastpitch softball league. Interest in the Women's Professional Softball League (WPSL) has been increasing for the last three years and continues to grow each year.
Now if you're anything like me, you know that when you start a sport for the first time. You have questions like my first question, “what in the world is softball”. Well now that I am a”softball”player I can tell you all there is to know about softball. Softball is a game between two teams with two sections to the field in field and outfield. There is the pitcher, the catcher, 1st,2nd,and3rd baseman, shortstop, and left, right, and center field.
Before we told our daughters that they could be anyone, or anything they wanted to be, we told them that they could only be what was acceptable for women to be, and that they could only do things that were considered "ladylike." It was at this time, when the nation was frenzied with the business of war, that the women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League decided that they could do and be whatever it was that they chose. These women broke free of the limitations that their family and society had set for them, and publicly broke into what had been an exclusively male sport up until that time.
In 1941, the United States entered WWII. Young men all over the country were being called to serve in the war. That doesn’t exclude professional sports players either. High profile MLB players, like Joe DiMaggio, were responsible for signing up for the draft also at the age of 18; so when duty called, they had to answer(Teitelbaum, 14). Baseball was an extremely popular form of entertainment. President Roosevelt called on Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis to keep the sport alive, even if the quality of a game was not as high(Galt, 10). At the same time, over 40,000 hometown women’s softball teams had already been formed. Teams were being sponsored by breweries, bakeries, taverns, big industries, and little individuals who wanted to be a part of the success(Galt,11). Women were going to take on the responsibility to ...
Baseball is a very well known sport and often known as “America’s pastime” and softball is highly similar, but with a few key differences. Many people just assume that the sport of baseball is more difficult than softball, but don’t actually know the specific parts of each of the two. Also, if you’ve never played one or the other sport, you shouldn’t be assuming anything at all in the first place. Although many assume one may be harder than the other, baseball and softball both have particular factors which make them both complex in their own way.
The effectiveness of the coaching method depends completely on the coach, his personality, and the needs of the student-athletes. Each program and institution is unique and has different institutional goals and objectives that attract different student-athletes compared to other colleges or universities (Koivula, Hassmen, Fallby, 2002).
Recently a major issue for women in sports is female coaches and their salaries. The salaries of the male coaches in athletics have continuously been on the rise. And on top of that, the male coaches make 159% of the money that female coaches make. Female participation in College athletics are also on the rise. However, the majority of funding in colleges goes into the men's athletic programs.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a successful track coach and coach your protégés to a successful season? Through job shadowing, personal experience, and research, I have found out just how much hard work goes into coaching.
As described in the Billion Dollar Ball Chapter, football programs are largely the most revenue grossing sports at a college (with the exception of Kansas) (Gaul. 2015). Similarly, as we discussed in class, most of that revenue is reinvested back into the athletic programs since schools are non-profit entities (In Class Work). Whether it is right or wrong and whether that money should have invested in the players is another question. Additionally, players are not being paid. As a result, I believe that the amount that a college coach gets paid should be a generous portion of that revenue. Another critique of college sports is that many schools do not produce a net positive revenue, but still pay millions for a coach anyways. Schools may do this in order to achieve the status of schools like Alabama or Clemson (Gaul, 2015). Regardless, of whether the revenue from the sport is present, I believe that if that school believes that coach will push their program to excellence, coach’s should be able to capitalize on that in the form of high
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
I believe that softball isn’t just something you just start for no reason. There’s always some underlying reason as to why you continue to play the game. I started when I was about 5 years old and at that age it may have been because of my parents wanting me to play a sport, but once I decided that I wanted to keep playing as I got older, my parents never made me. I just wanted to keep playing because I loved it. As you get older and learn more about the skill it becomes more about your love for the game than anything else. Yes, it’s definitely fun to play with your friends and have team bonding, but it’s also such a satisfying feeling when you win. I think that I play the game because I just have a love for it. If I didn’t have softball I
