For a long time, I was always interested in Police work or just wanted to be part of the team. Criminal Justice field is not the best paying job out there, but at the time I know it was interesting and it will be fulfilling to me. I always knew that the Criminal Justice Field is so big when it came down to occupation, so that IS why I had narrow down my decision to a SWAT Team division in a police force as an interest of occupation. The experience I had with a SWAT Team started last year from July to August. I spent a month with the Army 289th Military Police (Special Reaction Team) Company out of Washington D.C. However, there is a development of concerns that SWAT and SRT Team are misrepresented and overaggressive. SWAT Team effectiveness comes from their service of reporting to non-violent warrants offenders or conducting a raid on the information they received from higher. SWAT Team has the power to rush a house or a building without warning, frightening the residents or whoever it may be in the act of self-protection. I experience that there is the scenario in which SWAT or an SRT Team will conduct an assignment and it comes down to fear, assets destruction and death. Another major factor into an effected SWAT team is team building which is something I learned through my time with the 289th Military Police Company at Fort Myers. The importance of making a team work is the becoming more and more suitable in today’s self-motivating busy world. It is not easy to build an effected team, because putting a group of workers together is not the key to a successfully team. This paper will address a review of best practice regarding leadership in correctional facilities as well as an analysis of Corrections Corporation of America’s (CCA) Samberg Program. SWAT. The acronym invokes so many thoughts - danger, fighting crime, shootings, heavily artillery, TV, movies and more. The reality of SWAT is that it is all of that and more. When the acronym is fully expanded it translates to "special weapons and tactics" or as it was originally developed, "special weapons assault team". SWAT is a specialized, elite police unit trained to execute dangerous and specific operations that basic and even intermediate police training is not intended to handle. Commonly, many assume from knowledge gained from TV and movies about SWAT. These assumptions are often skewed because what happens on real missions is not always as entertaining as what is seen on the silver screen. The history, purpose, requirements, training, equipment, and tactics used during missions are all separate and important aspects in understanding SWAT.
The leadership approaches of David Harman and Frank Viturello, have greatly affected their organization as a whole as they lead and demonstrate by example. A career in law enforcement is a unique opportunity that has intrigued me for the majority of my life. My curiosity likely stems from multiple family members of mine, who either have a career in law enforcement or had one previously. With my family history and my interest in law enforcement, it would appear that selecting an occupation in law enforcement would be a simple task. Yet, I often ponder whether I would prefer to work for a municipal agency such as the San Francisco Police Department, or a federal agency, namely the FBI. I have researched a multitude of factors such as qualifications, requirements, salary, and job description to assist me in determining which profession is the right one for me.
Kania & Davis states, “One rarely even decides anything without significant input from coworkers, support staff, and subordinates, especially the planners and budgetary analysts on a work team” (Kania & Davis, 2012, p. 8). In any work capacity, team work will always be mentally and physically beneficial to the officer, squad and department. Police departments in the United States are para military command structures, by which the efforts of an officer affects each and every member of the department. Team work often builds stronger relationship between supervisors and officers. Team building not only accomplishes tasks and goals more efficiently, but it also builds rapport, comradely, and provides superior service to the community.
The leadership is a privilege and it is such a privilege and an honor which will carry the tremendous responsibility which will inspire others to direct them to accomplish goals and vision of the organization. Leadership is about influencing the people, by producing direction, purpose and motivating in order to accomplish the mission, vision and improving the organization. The leadership philosophy is evolved based on the experiences, both positive and negative, in most of the initiatives and activities that we undertake. It is also one among the collaboration and teamwork within which the team members can utilize each other’s strengths to counter the weaknesses of the individuals. By observing, introspecting and experimenting we can developed a leadership paradigm which is inclusive, collaborative and proactive. We can develop the ability to recognize which will approach in order to reach the productive conclusion. The great leaders know their limitations and are capable at utilize their strengths and also the strengths of others to compensate.
Great leaders are few and far between, but everyone possesses the power to be a good leader. I have only been in the military for about three and a half years; most of this time has been spent at CMR St-Jean and RMCC. I have yet to be put into any major leadership roles, but from what I have been able to accomplish in regards to leading others and the leaders that I have been able observe over the last few years, I have started to slowly figure out what type of leader I would like to become. According to Johns and Saks (2014) leadership is, “The influence that particular individuals exert on the goal achievement of others in an organizational context” (206). From past experience, influencing others to do something can be complicated at times but can be accomplished by staying focused on the task at hand. The leadership roles I have been able to take part in have brought me to the conclusion that cohesion is the core factor of how I lead.
All organizations, especially law enforcement agencies, require leadership. Maintaining a dependable leadership structure is key to the success of any organization. The philosophy of the modern style of police leadership involves a leader who is strong, competitive and unreceptive to change. Police leadership is based from an autocratic style which is founded on integrity and courage, embracing teamwork, involvement and shared leadership (Cordner & Scarborough, 2010). This style of leadership works well in an emergency situation in which rapid decision making and strict control is needed. The negative aspect to this style of leadership is the inability of the organization to function with the absence of leadership.
The success of a law enforcement agency is the efficient police officers on patrol and their bond with the community. There are many ways an officer executes his patrol and some are more common than others. Foot patrol, vehicular patrol, bicycle patrol, mounted horse patrol, motorcycle patrol, and air patrol are the multitude of ways officers patrol the community.
Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions. This paper states my points in which I duly believe, justifies the importance of an outstanding leader in any organization.
