Leadership Development in Law Enforcement Leadership in the field of law enforcement has been defined by many individuals, by the individuals, who work in the profession, by the individuals who are served by the profession, and by the individuals who monitor and scrutinize the profession. Leadership in law enforcement can at times provide leadership to subordinates, community members, and government officials and groups. A law enforcement leader must be able to call people to action, motivate, and lead individuals who otherwise would not react. As Lopez and Ensari (2014) claim “… autocratic leadership style is more associated with the military, and seen as old-fashioned” (p. 20). As society continues to evolve, expand, and question the interactions law enforcement professionals have with their communities the old fashioned autocratic leadership style is no longer effective. Respectively departmental managers and supervisors associate with managers and leaders of the same rank. While the CHP strives to foster a family atmosphere and encourages all employees to utilize their ‘partners’ or colleagues for many issues that may arise on a daily basis whether work related or of a personal nature the interaction is limited to individuals within an individual’s rank. This family focused attitude helps to alleviate some of the stresses that are common within the law enforcement profession.
