From early childhood up to adulthood, many people attend school. We spend most of our time in class being lectured and working on different subjects. The point of this is for us to obtain knowledge by learning. Learning, described as a 'biological process' by Robert Leamnson is what a person who pays attention in class will do for much of their life. Becoming a junior in highschool this year, I am familiar with my strengths and weaknesses as a student. Experiencing school each year makes me more aware of the type of student I am. I can reflect that I am a student who willingly wants to learn and do good in school, although I am not perfect I do try my best and believe that education is key to a successful future.
Since attending school is
the norm, I've spent enough time in that familiar environment to acknowledge my biggest weakness: procrastination. When given an assignment I usually put it off until the last minute. Many times I want to change my habits and start early, until I find myself distracted by almost anything. Procrastination is something I struggle with not just on schoolwork but in my personal life as well. I strongly relate to the section subtitled, “Time”, because a procrastinator does not do well organizing the amount of time they need to in order to finish a task. Before reading this article, I told myself that junior year was going to be different and I would improve my time management by giving myself enough time to do all my assignments and also focus on finishing them. Then I read through the article, “Learning”, and connected to the text because I felt that it had addressed how I felt about my weakness and also gave me tips on how to manage my time more efficiently. To conquer my biggest weakness in accordance to learning, I should take note of all my assignments and due dates, be more organized, and keep myself away from all potential distractions. Although overcoming any weakness isn’t easy, the amount of effort and time I put into the battle, the greater my results will be. For every bad, there is a good. I identify my greatest strength as being a self-driven person. I consider this a strength because I dont need the constant reminder of others to push my learning further. To me being a self-driven student is someone who has a clear goal and is motivated on their own to reach their aspirations. I am self-driven because I don't take the bare minimum of information provided to me. Whenever there is a topic I am confused about I take it as my responsibility to research the topic until I have a clearer understanding. I also approach other subjects I am passionate about that aren't available in school and try to learn to the best of my ability. I consider this being self-driven because I am the person that takes charge and controls the amount of knowledge I receive. To me, being self-driven is a very important trait in a student because being self-driven is what causes the good behavior; when your class behavior is not abrupt and you actually pay attention to the teacher on your own it is because you actually want to learn for your own benefit. Sometimes we good students can act up, but no human is perfect; we learn from these mistakes.
Nick Jans suggests that McCandless was either mentally ill or suicidal, however, this does not seem to be the case. Jans observations gives very good points, but they are not in the correct perspective. McCandless did not die because he disrespected the very land he purported to love.
“Black Awakening in Capitalist America”, Robert Allen’s critical analysis of the structure of the U.S.’s capitalist system, and his views of the manner in which it exploits and feeds on the cultures, societies, and economies of less influential peoples to satiate its ever growing series of needs and base desires. From a rhetorical analysis perspective, Allen describes and supports the evidence he sees for the theory of neocolonialism, and what he sees as the black people’s place within an imperial society where the power of white influence reigns supreme. Placing the gains and losses of the black people under his magnifying glass, Allen describes how he sees the ongoing condition of black people as an inevitable occurrence in the spinning cogs of the capitalist machine.
Richard Wright has been referred to me for therapy regarding his theft from the local theater, and I believe that he committed this crime because he believes that because of his station in society he would never be able to support himself and his family through honest means. Despite the fact that he does hold some remorse for his actions, it would appear that whatever remorse he holds is tempered by his justifications for stealing. A thorough analysis of his reasoning has been conducted and with testimony from the patient to serve as my proof, I will begin treatment to show him the error of his ways.
A lifetime earlier, Robert Owen was seeking to change the world in a superficially similar way to Hobson. From humble beginnings, Owen would later revolutionise industry in Britain and initiated the first steps towards much of the labour reform seen today. A utilitarian socialist, Owen emphasised the malleability of a person’s character by their environment and believed that the implementation of humanist laws and policies could change the character of workers and indeed entire industries.
One can say that every day is a learning experience. This can be said because almost every individual in their day to day interactions learn something they did not know the day before. This knowledge can be obtained in various ways, from school, to current events, to hands on experience, to family members and even a Snapple bottle cap. The knowledge that every individual obtains in way uniquely shapes their lives. The knowledge that is obtain helps people to better interact with other people. In the essays, Message to My Freshman Students by Keith M. Parsons, buying into the Green Movement by Alex Williams, and Against Meat by Jonathan Safran Foer all of these writers discuss the process of being educated and the importance of education. The
I can vaguely remember the days at St. James Catholic School when nap time, learning the ABC’s, and what I was going to play at recess were at the top of my concerns. In each grade new ideas were taught and learned. In Preschool, I learned how to color inside of the lines and how to sing the ABC’s. While in Kindergarten and First grade, I learned the basics of reading and how to properly write. Second grade was the year I learned how to write in cursive. In third grade, test taking became regular and lifelong friendships started to form. My early years in school taught me the basics for what I needed in the future.
Education is something that everyone has to do to succeed and one’s attitude towards school is the only way they will succeed. If a student has a negative attitude and is influenced too much by their surroundings it will be much harder for them succeed whereas a student who likes learning and developing their intelligence then it will be a much better experience for the student. The sooner a student realizes the type of student they are the better they will be at helping themselves succeed in school. A person does not have to be one specific type of student but it is best not to just be one way. It is important to be flexible, and adapt to your surroundings. The two types of students are called passive students and active students. In order for a student to get the most out of school they have to be an active student and that is what I would like to strive to do since I did have a few passive student tendencies.
Attending high school and entering college is a path in life that many of us choose. This path in life, along with any other of life’s routes, brings about change. You may view change as being positive or negative. Whichever way you view it, change is a part of life. It can bring forth many challenges, as well as adventures and new experiences. When people are confronted with change, some feel awkward and insecure. Although several people attempt to avoid it, change is inevitable. Despite change, these remain: the importance of setting priorities and goals for yourself, having determination, and doing your outright best. (Faith, hope, and love will also remain constant, steadfast and true.) Do not only grow intellectually (in book knowledge), but be wise and grow as an individual with morals and values as well. The following quote, written by John Dewey, summarizes the definition of education. “Education is a social process…Education is growth…Education is, not a preparation for life; education is life itself.”
From the very first day of high school people, guidance counselors, teachers, parents, have expressed to students, take everything we do and learn in the classroom seriously because we are planning our future, with the tools we are given. Whether students go to college or not, everyone will obtain something, memories, a diploma, a life lesson, etc. with them from high school. The assignments and due dates, seem like a pain in the butt at times, but as I sit down and watch as time flies by, I notice more and more that
One problem that the educational system faces is the obstacle between school and life. Schools need to break down the barrier in order to connect, going to school to learn and living your life. The students should be told that learning doesn’t stop after the bell rings or it is time to go it is happening all the time. In “School Is Bad For Children”, John Holt states, “’You come to school to learn’, we tell him, as if the child hadn’t been learning before, as if living were out there and learning were in here, and there is no connection between the two” (34). I think schools sometimes play a role of being separate from life because they enforce the rule of ‘you come to school to learn’ and that is it. Children come to school curious to learn with other people, particularly other children, but when the school teaches them to be indifferent they lose interaction with
When was the last time a student felt like an individual in the classroom? My guess, not in a long, long time. Getting an education is extremely important but at what cost? In schools all across the country, teachers are doing their jobs, to the best of their ability, as set for them by the school districts. The problem with that, is the student as an individual is lost in test scores and mundane information. Although education provides the fundamentals of life for students with subjects such as reading and math, a stronger emphasis on the student’s individual learning abilities and interests would greatly improve America’s education system.
One of the biggest problems with education is that it is poisoned in the way people view school. Some common phrases among students are that ?school is boring; school is work.? Theses attitudes have a direct effect on the effort that students put into their studies. One will obviously work harder when they aren?t bored with the task. There is a difference between hearing and listening and if students approach school as something that they see as boring and stressful than that student will only be hearing what the professor is saying. They may show up to class but this does not mean that they are necessarily there to learn. If school were fun than students would enjoy learning and thus, would learn more since it would be an enjoyable activity. School is just like a sport or a book in that if the book is well written and enjoyable than there is more incentive to read it, just as someone will put more effort into a sport that is fun than a sport they don?t enjoy. If school were fun, than students would strive to learn more.
While most students don’t think twice about their school and just say that it’s more of a burden on their life than anything, and I am a victim of this mindset as well, I do truly think that schools are an important part of my life. If it weren’t for my school, I wouldn’t really get the social interaction that I need in life. School is a gathering place for me and all of my friends, and although we don’t get to constantly talk with each other because of class work, we get those few moments everyday where we get to converse and make plans. School also helps me build on my current knowledge of the world and how things in the real world will
Education isn’t only about learning school subjects and passing our classes, it’s also about learning from life experiences, our failures and even from our family. Every day is a learning experience and in this essay, I’ll be giving you a little insight of my learning experience throughout my life that is important to me and how it shaped me into the person that I am today.
One of the hurdles that we encounter with education is the way school is perceived by people. Americans have lost their desire to learn; very often we hear phrases like, “school is boring” or “school is a lot of work,” among students. Children in school today would much prefer to be somewhere else. These students would rather be out with their friends or cavort around their home or anywhere but school. Now, when in school, they fail to remember the main reason why they are there. These results in many students avoiding school and sometimes do not bother to show up at all. According to U. S. Department of Education National Center for ...
