Differences Between the Emu, Rhea, and Ostrich Emu, Rhea, Ostrich… these are the names of three of the five flightless birds in the ratite family. These three birds all look strikingly similar except for their size, but is that really the only difference? Although their size is an extreme factor in their life they have several other differences. The three main differences between the emu, rhea, and ostrich are their habitat, their predators and defense, and how they raise their young. Before going more in depth about each of these differences let’s take a look at a brief background of these three birds. All three of these birds are in the Ratite family, which is a group of flightless running birds. This is the most primitive group of all …show more content…
For the ostrich, who is found in Africa, their predators may include cheetahs, lions, leopards, African hunting dogs, and the spotted hyena. Ostriches have many different defenses they can use, for example, they live in groups of 2-100 birds, most commonly in flocks of 10, this helps with their defense because with that many eyes they are able to spot any sign of danger. The real danger comes when ostriches are alone, the myth that ostriches put their head in the sand when threatened is not that far from the truth. When they are threatened and can’t run away, they do not actually stick their head in the sand, but they will go low to the ground, stick their head and neck in front of them, and remain still. This camouflages them and they end up looking like a rock, or mound of dirt. Another defense is their strong legs and clawed feet, they can deliver a kick that is strong enough to kill a lion. The last defense is that the ostrich has evolved for fast running, where most birds have three toes, the ostrich only has two making it possible to run faster. They also use their wings to help balance them while they’re running. So even though the ostrich can’t fly away from predators, they can run fast enough to leave the predator far behind. The emus have different types of predators, the ones that attack the older emus, like dingoes and wedged-tailed eagles, and the ones that go after the eggs, like reptiles such as snakes and goannas. The emu also has a very strong kick, but unlike the ostrich, has three toes with the middle one having a long nail. Emus are the only bird with calf muscles and this combined with their strong legs allows them to jump straight up seven feet in the air. When their kick and jumping does not do the trick emus, like ostriches, can run from their predators. “With good eyesight and amazing agility, emus can escape most any trouble! If

Jeanne and Elie have many similarities and differences. Not only did they both go through the same thing, but they also went through some very different experiences. Jeanna and Elie were around the same age and their emotions were somewhat different because of the different experiences.
In conclusion, owls have shown they are excellent at adapting to any environment by the ability to fly silently to stalk prey. They use camouflaged and insulated feathers to hide and keep warm while hunting. Owl’s excellent binocular vision, and hearing helps to track prey from long distances. The only real risk of extinction of the burrowing owl is if people continue to kill off animals that dig holes for them. They have shown the ability to survive for a long time with the help of other animals digging holes for them. Owl’s will continue to evolve long after humans have
Frankenstein 's Fallen Angel is a story about how victor is a doppelganger of his creation, the monster. The monster is a representation of who Victor is, throughout the book you can see how Victor and the monster are similar and how the differences don’t seem that different the more you read. “Remember that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed.” These lines refer to the Biblical story of Adam and also Milton 's Paradise Lost.
Hummingbirds have evolved certain behavioural and physical traits which allows for them to be more energetically efficient, such as specialized storage and digestion adaptations, feeding and flying adaptations and breathing adaptation. Hummingbirds are extremely small and their muscles for flight are highly oxygen-dependent and require large amounts of energy. Hummingbirds are one of the smallest endotherms and any energetic output can be metabolically stressful. The hummingbirds’ small body size means that they have very little room for energy storage and therefore often endure energetic and metabolic stresses. They are the one of the oldest aves, dating back to some 33 million years ago and have evolved certain energy efficient adaptations that have allowed for them to live so long. These adaptations allow Hummingbirds to efficiently meet their energetic needs which in turn, allows for them to not only survive but also continue to evolve and expand their specific niches.
Though-out Ridge’s novel we see a story that is much similar to that of Ridge’s life. Joaquin and Ridge were both educated. They both left home in search of a better life and both had to realize that life, because of their race, was already being shaped for them. The story of Joaquin was tragic yet romantic. It was dreamy and exciting. Ridge’s personal background helped shape the justification of violence and also romanticized the story of Joaquin Murieta to accommodate the much needed excitement missing in California.

By nature, all children must turn into adults someday, and that transition is often not an easy one. Many people go through traumatic events in order to achieve adulthood, some events more life changing then others. In the novel, The Round House by Louise Erdrich, the story is told through the point of view of a native American 13 year old named Joe, who is witnessing his life fall apart after his mother is brutally attacked and raped; However, Joe refuses to stay a child during these events, and he becomes a modern-day warrior as his determination to find the attacker and find balance for his family is reflective of his native American culture. He finds new independence, receives support from his family and friends, and tests his limits as

The first impression one might have about Crocs' products are that they are basically plastic looking shoes that are comfortable and readily available. Customers familiar with this product boast, like on the company website, about "the company’s proprietary closed-cell resin, Croslite™, a technology that gives each pair of shoes the soft, comfortable, lightweight, non-marking and odor-resistant qualities"(Company.crocs.com, 2011). There are also various comments about how the material does not slip when exposed to water and of the popularity of the shoes since their "first sale in 2003"(Hoyt & Silverman, 2008, p.13). Over the last few years, the popularity of the shoes have dropped off and the purpose of this study is to present an analysis of the company's value chain and determine what changes I would incorporate and why.
Probably the most serious predators of baboons are the large carnivores such as cheetahs and leopards. Baboons live mostly on the ground but sleep in such places as trees or cliffs. “Throughout Africa baboons achieve some protection from nocturnal predators by sleeping in tall trees or on cliffs (Smuts 19). Usually each troop sleeps on a different cliff, but occasionally two troops will share a single sleeping site.
Imagine finding out that your older brother is working for the very man you are trying to kill. Well that's how it was for Eragon Morzansson. At first, Eragon didn’t know that his older brother, Murtagh Morzansson, was his brother at all. They were actually really good friends and helped The Varden, the rebel army trying to overthrow the king, in a few battles, but was kidnaped by two magicians who betrayed The Varden. Murtagh was then brought to the king in the capital city of the Empire, Urû'baen.
...ss birds. No other avian species need be considered; ostriches, cassowaries, nandus, rheas, kakpos, kiwis and penguins cannot begin to match the bellicosity of Rhode Island’s emus. Certainly, these species may be dangerous when cornered, but none regularly stalk and attack humans. Daunting physical prowess, exemplified by vicious claws, qualifies the emus as dangerous. But far more importantly, emus use their natural abilities in what can only be called a malevolent manner; attacks on police officers which strike at the very heart of society; and sudden, explosive ambushes which leave victims severely injured or dead. Now is the time for all Rhode Islanders to come together and find a solution for this perilous situation. Failure to act now and to act decisively will result in an ever increasing conflict between man and the world’s most dangerous flightless bird.
