a friend. As a resident advisor, you’re holding a leadership position, and it’s important to set a good example for residents. For example, it is important to be able to effectively communicate when hosting programs so residents can learn while socializing. Some ways to effectively communicate when hosting programs would be by creating a receptive environment for the residents. Creating an open environment for residents will encourage them to participate in to get more audience. To communicate programs in a timely and efficient way to get more audience. confidential. Being a trustworthy leader is important, because there may be times where residents give confidential information. I learned that is important to know what to do with the information provided. In some cases, it is necessary to inform superiors of any conflict that may put other residents at risk. As an effective communicator and leader, it is important to know the legal aspects of confidentiality to avoid any conflicts. My overall goal is to help residents and provide them a healthy living environment by helping resolve conflicts. Being a resourceful leader may help residents by providing creative ways to overcome difficulties. Knowing the protocol for emergency and non-emergency situations will benefit me in becoming a resourceful leader to residents.
I think it is important that residents know me as a staff member that is available, approachable, and resourceful. In class, I learned that observing the daily patterns of residents may be beneficial when responding to an emergency or a non-emergency situation. Noticing the patterns of residents would help me react accordingly and follow up on residents. My goal is to help residents in any way that I can at any time. To be able to reach my goal, it is critical that I am known as approachable and resourceful so that residents are confident enough to ask me for help. For residents to approach me and ask for help, I must be a good role model worthy of
following. As a leader, I aspire to be a great role and be able to inspire residents in a positive way. I want to set a good example for students by following all university and residence hall policies while modeling the mature behavior expected of Mary Baldwin students. In class, I learned that it is important to appropriately dress because residents are looking at the things you do. Therefore, it is important to portray a good image of oneself. I also learned that as a leader you must set a good example on and off campus at all time. To reach my goal, I will display a good character and genuine intentions to always help the Mary Baldwin community. In conclusion, a resident advisor upholds an important leadership position among residents. I aspire to be an effective resident advisor, by incorporating the knowledge I gained in the residential leadership class. My overall goal as a resident advisor will be to prevent crisis situations and respond appropriately to any given situation to be able to provide residents with a positive living environment. Chapter one of Ten Traits of Highly Effective Principals opens with one of the most influential traits of what an effective principal should possess, the communication trait. To be successful in any venue in life, you must be able to communicate with people; this is especially true in the education world. Principals are responsible for communicating with people in all walks of life, parents, students, teacher, administrative office personnel and the general public, as an administrator, you must make each of these individuals feel a sense of trust and belonging while communicating with them. Principals use conversations and gesture to build confidence and open lines of communication for learning and growth.
This level of advocacy for my residents comes from the heart and truly loving my residents for who they are. As an advocate for my first year students, I emphasize their potential and all of the great things they are getting involved with as first year students, such as, fraternity and sorority life, engineering clubs, acapella groups, residence life and so much more. Advocating for residents to become part of a community is very important because this allows my residents to find a home at UCF, whether it is in the Department of Housing and Residence Life or another group on campus. Looking into the future, my role as an advocate will change going into my living learning community and working with upperclassmen. My students in my living learning community will not only need me to be an advocate for them as diverse individuals, but they also get to see me as an advocate for certain issues. For my upperclassmen who are not a part of the living learning community, I am an advocate for them when they need to me to be there for them. I will present myself as an aid to them and allow them to decide how involved they want me to be in their time living in on campus
Becoming a leader can be achieved by all not just a selective group. Consequently, it is impactful to be a positive role model because they are influential people that others can look up to. Resident Advisors set the standard of a residence hall. During my freshman year, I had the pleasure of having Brittany as my Resident Advisor. At the first hall meeting Brittany set the tone for the new semester, she came off as resourceful, kind and established boundaries early. Moreover, she expected us to be respectful of her and others during our time in Scott Hall. Brittany is an example of why it is significant to be a positive reminder among residents and campus peers. Positivity, transparency, and flexibility are a few leadership skills that are necessary to be an effective RA. There is no perfect Resident Advisor but those are an example of traits that help. Using past experiences and observation of strong leadership styles a combination of those traits produces optimal results and form better
The life course perspective looks at our chronological age, certain roles and behaviors, experiences, and our characteristic. It is also analyzes the development of human behavior, physical contexts and social change that is shaped by our lifetime experiences. Human life is divided into numerous age spans, infancy, childhood, adolescence, early adulthood, middle age and older age which plays a significant role in the process and steps of how we mature. Question #3 Memo Date: March 6th, 2016 To: The Roberts-Wilson Facility of Nursing, Director of Nursing From: Simone Roberts, Director of Activities Re: Quality of Life of Residents Activities are considered to be a stress reliever. It is very important and meaningful when it reflects the importance of a person’s interest, making them feel useful and providing them with a sense of enjoyment. The facility must offer program of activities designed to meet the quality of life and interest of resident’s mental, physical and emotional need. It’s very important for the facility to conduct individual assessments of each resident to find out their needs and to build up their
It is with parents, teachers, and other leaders before us that we are molded and fine-tuned to better envision our future. As nursing students we begin school with insecurities that can be exacerbated by the unfamiliar world of nursing and health care. According to Robinson (2009), faculty have the power to influence and provide opportunities to create an environment for discussions of errors and allow the analysis of the causes and creation of plans to avoid future mistakes” (p. 5). This type of servant teacher leadership can lead a student to achieve personal and professional growth and promotes student success. Robinson (2009) goes on to say that, it is with those faculty who listen and respond to students, who demonstrate skills of listening and empathy, in which students emulate and carry with them in professional practice (p. 6). I have always had that drive for continuous improvement, not only for myself but for others as well. The health care profession is a humble experience and a test of character. Throughout nursing school and our assigned clinicals, I’ve realized that while working in health care can be very difficult, especially in trying situations, one must also consider the community around you and the support they possess. These types of experiences slowly seep into your being and slowly change the way you think and make you consider your
When I was a Camp counselor at Camp Mendocino, the most important part of my job was to make sure my campers were safe, comfortable, and were enjoying their camp experience. My responsibilities were facilitating and helping organize activities for the campers. I also gained valuable experience with conflict mediation, and problem solving. I was trained to know what to do in emergency situations, and social situations such as bullying. One of the most important lessons I learned from the experience is when to be a friend, and when to be professional. I believe this experience relates to the resident assistant role because it does consist of similar responsibilities. Both jobs require the individual to provide comfort and supervision. Not only do the two resemble similar rules, that one must enforce and abide by, to be an RA or camp counselor you must be able to put yourself in your supervisees’ shoes. As a second year student I definitely have had my fair share of stress and hard times from the transition from high school to independence. Just like a camp counselor I would be able to give comfort to homesick students and tell them things do get easier. I also have experience with running events and activities that are both safe and fun, and I can stay calm and act fast in an urgent situation.
two years in being open and accepting of students by being an RA in my residence hall
As a resident of the Setters Leadership and House FIG, my passion for serving the community has grown even more. I view my RA as a leader in the community—a person that I can entrust and seek if I ever need help. Those who currently uphold a RA position in the residence halls that I have built relationships with have inspired me to become a RA. The RAs that I got to know helped me adjust to the different environment here at Pace. With that difficult transition from Hawaiʻi to New York, I know how it feels like to be culture-shocked. Now that I have settled in and adjusted to the different lifestyle, I would be a great source to seek in helping students who are having a difficult time adjusting to the different environment whether they are traveling
I had a wonderful experience at clinical today and learned a great amount. I feel as I am becoming more confident with working with my resident as well as others. Strengths included demonstrating effective clinical decision-making and safety in practice (objective 5), communicating with the client (objective 2), and implementing strategies to promote, maintain and restore health (objective 4). An example of how I demonstrated objective 5, was when I was feeding a resident that I was unfamiliar with. First, I checked for any diet restrictions, then I made sure to give the resident small bites as I was unfamiliar with her eating style. I would rather it take longer for the resident to finish the meal
I am good at communicating with patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team. I listen attentively when being spoken to by others and through my bachelor’s degree program I learned several helpful tools to assist with becoming a better nurse and leader. Journaling helps to reflect back on the day and different situations to get a better understanding of how to handle or not handle things in the future. Mentoring has been a great resource for me since I was a cardiac nurse for so long I was not sure exactly what to expect when transferring to home care. I have a supervisor who has graciously taken me under her wing and assisted me through all the Medicare and Medicaid guidelines which is something I did not have to deal with very much while working in the hospital. I am great at advocating for my patients but I do fall short when it comes to advocating for myself. I have held both nursing and management roles during my nursing career which I feel will attribute to my success in this program but there are still several things that I need to improve
I am also interested in this position because it combines aspects of college counseling and residential life. I have been an active member of residential life throughout my undergraduate years. As a sophomore, I was chosen as a customs person and was responsible for mentoring eight first year students as they adjusted to college life. I was charged with creating a community within the dorm and was available for any
Over the summer of 2016, I had the amazing opportunity to be a summer RA in Unit 2. During my time as a RA, I discovered how passionate I am about building a sense of community in the residence halls and supporting my fellow peers. From simply saying hi to my residents to navigating more serious situations to hosting events, I was able to construct a welcoming and inclusive community. In turn, I had the chance to learn about them, connect with them and encourage their personal growth! As the summer closed, I reflected on my experience and I realized that I had also grown-- as a student, leader, and person all over the course of only two months! I strengthened my time management and organizational skills, I employed leadership skills every day,
One of the main branches of students affairs is the community director in the residence hall. The directors duty is look after the residence and overlook the work RA does in the residence hall. I interviewed the community director on my hall who represents students affairs to get an even better view on how students affairs work. The name of my community director is Kristopher Little and as a residence I respect the work he do and the how approachable he is makes him a great member of students affair department. And as a students of a prestigious institution I greatly appreciate the work students affairs do for as in a whole and how they help other students with their troubles is highly respectable.
...ow using knowledge, empathic and reflective dimensions play such a huge role in ones job and I can associate it with my prior experiences now. I want patients to walk out my room feeling like I have made a positive change in their life, whether it is small or big. Responsibility comes with playing such an important role in other people’s lives and it is how I embrace this responsibility that will determine how I change the lives of others. Not only do I want a good relationship with my clients but also with my co-workers because I might be able to make a small difference in someone’s life, but it’s us Health Professionals working together that will make the greatest difference.
An important step to becoming an effective leader is to develop effective communication skills. Communication is the transmission of meaning from one person to another or to many people, whether verbally or non-verbally (Barrett, 2006). Effective communication enables leaders to lead.
