Many people throw the term ‘professional’ around so often that it seems to have lost its meaning. It is extremely important for oneself to deeply understand the role and importance of being a professional, and even further, becoming an Integrated Healthcare Professional (IHP) and so through the IHP framework one is able to do so. It is very easy to say, “Yes, I know what knowing, empathic and reflective mean”, but these three dimensions are not just something to be known, but also shown. You need to show, as an IHP, to not only your patients but also your co-workers that you can ‘be’ all three of these dimensions. One would think that clearly a Health Professional should have all the practical knowledge of their profession, this is correct however they also need to know the environment in which they work in i.e. the equipment (new or old), as well as the type of people and cultures they will be working with. In summary the key point of truly ‘knowing’ your profession, is lifelong learning. The empathic role of the IHP framework to me is the most important. How can you call yourself a Healthcare Professional if you can’t be truly sensitive and understanding of your patient? Treating the patient as you would want to be treated should be a subconscious task. A kind gesture or a simple act of gratitude towards your clients choosing you as their Healthcare Professional shows them you care. Lastly, the reflective dimension, you need to be someone a client can look up to knowing they are in safe hands, not someone for them to worry about. This is where the reflective dimension comes into play. When we see patients, we must remember that we are not simply treating a disease. We are caring for people with lives, hobbies, jobs, families, and friends, who are likely in a very vulnerable position. During my career as a registered nurse I have had the privilege of caring for my patients at the bedside and meeting their needs holistically. Additionally, the safety of my patients is one of the most important aspects of my current role. The demand of a constantly developing health service has required each professional to become highly specialised within their own field. Despite the focus for all professionals being on the delivery high quality care (Darzi, 2008); no one profession is able to deliver a complete, tailored package. This illustrates the importance of using inter-professional collaboration in delivering health care. Patient centric care is further highlighted in policies, emphasising the concept that treating the illness alone whilst ignoring sociological and psychological requirements on an individual is no longer acceptable. Kenny (2002) states that at the core of healthcare is an agreement amongst all the health professionals enabling them to evolve as the patient health requirements become more challenging but there are hurdles for these coalitions to be effective: for example the variation in culture of health divisions and hierarchy of roles. Here Hall (2005) illustrates this point by stating that physicians ignore the mundane problems of patients, and if they feel undervalued they do not fully participate with a multidisciplinary team.
Healthcare professionals in the medical office should be friendly and open. Joint projects come in different forms, such as clinical team working together to provide patient care after discharge. Also, joint projects are when a healthcare facility work with a clinical team. These partnerships could be seen as helping improve the quality of care.
Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs.
