Carmen Amaya was a wonder to watch in whatever she was doing. She could do it all! She excelled in flamenco dancing, acting, and singing. Amaya was well known for each of her talent, and was imitated often. She was a very famous women that especially changed the world of South Spain’s flamenco dancing forever.
Carmen was born on November 2nd, 1913 in Somorrostro, a small town in Barcelona, Spain that’s seaside. It is said that on the night of her birth there was a treacherous storm at sea. Her parents were Jose and Micaela Amaya. She had 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Her sister’s names were Antonia, Leonor, and Maria Amaya. Her brother’s names were Antonio and Francisco Amaya. She influenced flamenco dancers, actors and actresses, and singers. Though she was famous for her many talents, she was most recognized for her style of flamenco dancing. Flamenco dancing is a professional dancing technique based on the many music traditions of Southern Spain. She started dancing at the age of 4 and as she began to master the dance and even add her own little style to it which just brought more attention to her. For example, instead of wearing what normal flamenco dancers wore, formal, swoopy skirts, she decided that she wanted to wear plain trousers.
Amaya’s flamenco dancing teacher was Pilar Lopez. Pilar taught many young dancers but she’s most known for guiding Carmen into the great flamenco dancer she was. Although Pilar was an important key to Carmen for being such a great dancer, Amaya’s family helped her the most. Carmen was said to have learned dancing mostly from her own family. This helped her to become closer with her parents and siblings.
Even though Carmen was widely known for her dancing, she won a best actress award in 1963. Amya was the definition of a superstar in all of Spain, but mostly around the area where she grew up Southern Spain. In 1936, she moved to America where her acting career took off like a rocket. She starred in several movies. The most famous of them all that she appeared in was Romeo and
Juliet. Carmen Amaya died on November 19th, 1963. She was a great influence to the way people dance today. Also she’s such an inspiration to all tho try and excel in multiple areas of talent because of how much success and fun she had in her life. She danced the way she wanted to, and because of that, she will always be remembered as the greatest woman flamenco dancer of all time.

Selena Quintanilla Perez was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena grew up understanding Spanish, but English was her first language. At the age of five Selena saw her brother learning to play the guitar and became jealous of the attention he was getting. She picked up a songbook and began to sing. Her family quickly turned their attention to her strong and beautiful voice. In the first grade Selena excelled at a game called Jump the Brook, in which two ropes are placed side by side and each kid takes a turn jumping across.1 In middle school Selena was in honors classes and made A’s and B’s. Selena used her allowance to put clothes on layaway. As a teenager, Selena hung all of her awards on the wall next to the staircase in her family’s house. During my visit, I was able to observe different dances that were very interesting. Two dances that caught my attention were the “Toro Mambo” representing the state of Sinaloa and “Payasos of Tlaxcala” representing Tlaxcala. The “Toro Mambo” from the region of Sinaloa is one of the most popular dances in Mexico. The dance is really interesting for the reason that it represents a story in where a bull would dance on a place known as the “mambo.” In this folk dance the dancer do movements at the same paste while trying to imitate how the bull would dance. In this dance the women wear long colorful dresses to represent joy and in order to move the skirts higher. In contrast, the men wear light color shirts and jeans that matches with their partner. In the other side the dance of the “Payasos de Tlaxcala” represents a story of a festival in the region of Tlaxcala. To perform this dance men and women dress like clowns in colorful outfits to amuse the people in the festival. During the dance, the dancers try to satisfy the public by putting humor in the dance and doing crazy movements. This dances are both very great and enjoyable to watch.
