Selena Quintanilla Perez Known as “La Reina De Tex-Mex” and often referred to as the Mexican Madonna, Selena Quintanilla Perez touched the hearts of many people; and continues to touch the hearts of people long after her passing. Selena was a Hispanic singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, and actress who is credited for including ‘Tejano music’ (a fusion of Columbian cumbia, pop, R&B sung in Spanish) genre into the mainstream music scene ("Selena Biography", n.d.). Through her music, beauty, and unconditional kindness, Selena has left an undying legacy for as she once said, "The goal isn't to live forever the goal is to create something that will." At the young age of six, Selena was already believed to be set for fame, by her father. Under the management of her father, Selena formed a family band, also known as Selena y Los Dinos, that practiced almost every day. Selena's Success Like any singer or celebrity, Selena's career started off small. Selena and Los Dinos started off with practicing at their family restaurant called Papa’s Gallos in Lake Jackson, Texas. After the closing of that restaurant, they moved to Corpus Christi where the band would perform at weddings, street corners, carnivals, and wherever people would accept them. With this progress, the band kept getting successful by traveling all over the state. In the long run, Selena missed most of her classes and stopped attending school by the age of eight. However, to keep up with what she was falling behind in her schooling, she took classes through the American School in Chicago and on 1989, she finally received her GED. In the year of 1987, Selena won at the Tejano Music Awards. After winning this award she goes on to win this same award about eight more times. As the "Queen of Tejano Music", Selena served as a very important representation of Latinos. As mentioned before, she was known as Mexican Madonna for her dance moves and nice looking outfits. After winning Best Female Vocalist and Performer of the Year for nine times in a row it seems impossible to forget the legacy that she has left for us. Selena was a person who stepped out of her comfort zone to succeed, as well as, never let money and fame get into her way. Selena became an inspiration not only to girls who shared her dream but to the many Latino people she represented. Through her music people have and still continue to unite and relate to. As a representation of the Hispanic and Latino culture, Selena has the touched the hearts of many who till this day remember and keep her legacy
