What I Learned About Leadership from an Interview with Dr. Gretchen Caughman In my interview with Dr. Caughman, someone I view as a very capable leader, I learned that communication is an extremely important factor to becoming an effective leader. Additionally, this skill has a large impact on the various components of the Relational Leadership Model. I will be using the information gleaned from this interview and leadership experience to develop my communication skills, and to focus on observing the tactics employed by successful leaders. An individual can be in a position of leadership but have no followers, while someone without any position may find themselves with a following. In situations like this the real leader is the one who has acquired followers and is effectively leading said followers. According to Dr. Caughman, the characteristic necessary for a leader in order to be effective is communication. Furthermore, it must be remembered that communication is a two-way road. In order for a leader to empower those who are loyal to them they must properly communicate encouragement and appreciation. To empower one’s followers, emotional intelligence and awareness is necessary. The promotion of inclusivity can be acquired through confirming understanding and avoiding the assumption that all members of a unit have the same purpose in mind. Including everyone within a group or making everyone feel as though they are included and necessary for the cause can be a difficult venture, however, if the proper steps are taken it will make the team that much more powerful. As was stated before, ethics are vital to maintain loyalty. For example, it is not ethical to focus solely on the business element of leadership as opposed to the human element and therefore take on dictatorial qualities. This strategy would shortly cause a diminishing of loyalty, and thus lead to the falling away of followers.
Purpose is often viewed as the most important aspect of a project, but without the other elements the purpose may never come to fruition. The purpose of a leader is to guide a cohesive working unit, communicating clearly throughout the process in order to be ethical and convey empowerment and inclusivity. It is through this progression that the desired goals will be reached while maintaining loyalty and promoting other necessary qualities
Leaders are meant to bring up loyal followers who can assume the lead if they are called to do so. A major driving force for leadership is a mutually agreed upon goal. This allows a smoother relationship between all parties involved because they are all working towards the same outcome. Leadership is not a position; it is a way one conducts himself. With that being said, there are times when a leader needs to function as a follower. A leader must be able to adjust accordingly to different situations, and be whatever is called for in the moment. To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
Stuart (1996) recognizes leadership as discovering the way ahead and encouraging and inspiring others to follow (Barr & Dowding, 2012). When considering the selection of the person I believe is a leader in the field of healthcare leadership to interview for this assignment, I took this into consideration and looked for someone that demonstrated the ability to encourage and inspire others.
Strong leadership is critical to an organizations success. Leaders need to be honest, trustworthy, respected, and good communicators (Montana & Mitchell, 2005, p. 83). Effective communication is necessary to eliminate confusion. Think how the receiver will interpret the message that you are saying or writing. Effective communication can only occur when the receiver of the message understands what the sender is intending to say.
Communication and timing are important. Great leaders are great when they get something across to the followers that the followers want to hear, there is a clear understanding from both sides. "The great leader is a master in the art of communication. He or she is aware of the strong need for actions to match words. Leaders need to possess a willingness to listen to input with an open mind." (Sugarman), "Leadership is about building connections. Effective leaders make people feel they have a stake in common problems." (Goodwin). Great leaders are good with timing; "Timing is (almost) everything. Knowing when to introduce an initiative, when to go before one's constituents -- and when to hold off -- is a crucial skill." (Goodwin).
Groups and organizations are embedded into everyday life. We are either a part of one or a witness the one. Chapter twelve of Exploring Leadership by Komives discusses the organization system of an organization. This chapter explores how the five aspects of the Relational Leadership Model is apparent in organizations. Some of the main takeaways were the organization systems, leadership in organizations and organizational culture.
McLarty´s session was mainly Q&A. Nevertheless, he gave us some advice about how to become successful leaders. The first point was “Do not be afraid of the truth” the truth is not negotiable and if it costs me my job that is fine, we do not have to stay in a place in which we do not feel conformable. “Let your yes be yes and your no be no” (Dr. McLarty). Second, “Do not fear conflict”. Being able to handle conflict and deal with people is a key to success. Even the most genius person will not get too far if he lacks conflict solving skills. Third, “Do not fear failure”. Failure is normal and everyone is going to fail at some point. However, learning cannot happen without mistakes and mistakes are part of the thinking, learning, making, and recovering from mistakes cycle that will lead us to generate the best ideas (Great by Choice, p. 86). Furthermore, Dr. McLarty said that besides these three things, a successful leader helps folks explore their best. Leadership is seen in all walks of life and so there are many social and psychological factors that people have theorised can make a great leader. ‘Effective leadership’ is therefore difficult to define as there are so many standpoints that one could take. Taking the perspective of a social psychologist, Chemers stated that leadership is “a process of social influence through which an individual enlists and mobilises the aid of others in the attainment of a collective goal” (2001, as cited in Hogg and Vaughan, 2014) and so it would be fair to assume that a good leader can be seen through the success of the rest of the group. In my interview with Cathy Gentry, I learned a great deal of information. She has a kind personality but able to offer sincere advice to her employees and everyone she meets. She carries herself with an approach that adapts to each individual within her organization. If I were to interview Cathy’s colleagues, I feel as though I would be given a warm response that shares the strong leadership sense I now have of her. The traits Cathy holds are many of which I hope to emulate in my further career

Leaders are the people held accountable or everything that happens, good or bad. On the other hand, the second major component of leadership is the followers. Without followers, a leader would be worthless. Followers make up the backbone of a leader because they are the masses that get goals accomplished. A leader is just one person, but the number of followers is countless. In order to be an effective follower, there are a countless number of characteristics that allow a follower to be the best they can be. People tend to forget this major contribution and how significant this really is. Usually when we analyze leaders, people will directly link their work ethics to the internal culture of the company. Great leaders indirectly create loyal customers by cultivating an environment where employees can shine in producing excellent customer satisfaction levels. Good leaders are functionally productive and effective because they know the importance of hiring the right people for the job and how to help them to develop skills that are essential to interact with customers and maintain good customer relationships. In contrast, a dysfunctional leader’s poor behavior would indirectly lead to poor customer relationship held by employees and this can ultimately increase loss of company profits.
