Although there were different topics discussed during the seminar, most speakers touched on some common themes. Many speakers made emphasis on the importance of communication, how to find a life balance, how to choose priorities in life, the importance of practicing the golden rule and of standing for what one believes, and how to adjust to changes in life. The topic that stood out to me the most was about the importance of standing for what we believe. As Brett Biggs, Vice President and CFO of Wal-Mart said, it is essential that we find a Company that values what we value. He has a positions that very few people can obtain and that speaks a lot about him. Something that stood out to me a lot was the emphasis he kept doing on figuring out who we are and what values do we stand for. As I mentioned earlier, Brett spoke about the importance of finding a company that fits our values so that we do not put ourselves into situations where we have to cross lines. This is also discussed by Howard Schultz in his book. As Schultz said, “Starbucks challenge was finding individuals whose accomplishments were matched by their values and an innate sense for Starbucks ´culture (Onward, p. 176). Moreover, he said that effective leaders are always looking for ways to provide convenience. To illustrate that point he shared how he always schedules thirty minute meetings. McLarty´s session was mainly Q&A. Nevertheless, he gave us some advice about how to become successful leaders. The first point was “Do not be afraid of the truth” the truth is not negotiable and if it costs me my job that is fine, we do not have to stay in a place in which we do not feel conformable. “Let your yes be yes and your no be no” (Dr. McLarty). Second, “Do not fear conflict”. Being able to handle conflict and deal with people is a key to success. Even the most genius person will not get too far if he lacks conflict solving skills. Third, “Do not fear failure”. Failure is normal and everyone is going to fail at some point. However, learning cannot happen without mistakes and mistakes are part of the thinking, learning, making, and recovering from mistakes cycle that will lead us to generate the best ideas (Great by Choice, p. 86). Furthermore, Dr. McLarty said that besides these three things, a successful leader helps folks explore their best. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. This past week SUU’s native American student association (NASA), hosted their 38th annual powwow. Our club, the SUU Polynesian club was invited to dance for thirty minutes between their activities and we happily accepted. After we danced we were invited to come back so that we could watch and experience the native American culture. I was surprised to see how similar their culture was to ours!

My sixteen week class in English 111. I was really nervous about this class. Because English has never been my strong point. This class has hard, but fun all at the same time. I learn a lot from this class. Meanwhile,the first day of class you handed a paper with a question on it. “The first thing I want to say to you who are students is that you must not think of being here to receive an education; instead, you will do much better to think of being here to claim one.” Even though putting my all in what I have learned, claiming my education with hard work because using the skills of the meal plan, as we write to different audiences and learning to be a Critically thinker as I start becoming a critically-Literate Citizenship.
I grew up knowing the value of a hard earned dollar. This past summer, I got to experience this personally. I received my first job, at Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park. The process went smoothly; I handed in my application, and an assistant manager said there was a group interview the next day. During the interview with 14 others, I acted professional and myself. At Sky Zone, big personalities are required, and I thought I was a good fit. Days later, the general manager of the Syracuse location called and offered me a job. I was excited and ready to start another chapter of my life.
The TED talk video with Simon Sinek really captured my attention and made me more aware of what a real leader should be for an organization. (YouTube). Sinek gave us valid evidence that a leader can create either a successful team or completely shut down their functionality. My organization is a manufacturing company for making wheel loaders, dozers, trucks, and excavators and chapter nine of our book resonated with me since it spoke about Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Checklists, and ISO standards. All of these items have been implemented by a vision from our CEO and I understand more today, than I did seven weeks ago that his ability to formulate the vision is the start of the equation which was shown in the video by Professor Gill, for our Leadership class. Professor Gill was able to explain all of the criteria needed for a successful organization and it all starts with the leadership. You can be strong in statesmanship and weak in innovation as a leader, but it is important to identify your weakness to surround yourself with other leaders who have the strength you are lacking.
In leadership motivation is essential, and when a leader is invested in the goals of their followers, new heights can be achieved. Another lesson I learned, is the importance of having a mentor. Throughout Randy’s career he was always reaching out to mentors to guide him. In his personnel life, he and his wife were going to a counselor to learn how to better deal with the situation of Randy’s cancer. Even as a leader, there is always someone who you can learn
There are many amazing companies today that all offer special benefits to their employees. What one person finds important another might not. After graduating from college the next most important step in life is to enter the job market. With the competitiveness of the job market it is not always possible to be selective with employers. However, it is important to evaluate the qualities that you value in a company.
Success as business leaders come from a combination of context and characteristics. Most business leaders possess certain characteristics such as vision, perseverance and risk tolerance; but it was less of their possession of any specific set of characteristics, rather than the deployment of them in ways that capitalized on the context in which they found themselves that set these leaders apart. Business schools, such as Ted Rogers should aid students in the process of understanding and appreciating the contexts in which they will operate. In addition, they should help to refine and enhance an individual’s understanding of his or her own leadership potential. The biographies of great leaders suggest that some leaders may well have had natural talents that were apparent early in their lives, which they were in a sense born leaders. Equally, though, there were just as many who appeared to have learned to lead over time, from mentors, from experience and from education. This will affect Ryerson in the future as many people who graduate from the program may have all the academic tools with them but will not have any leadership skills which is just as important, if not more important in the business world
Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership, not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. All in all, this book highlights strategies for us all to be better in our lives and our everyday interactions.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
Walmart’s throughout the United States continue to succeed. Two things that they continue to succeed at is telling the Walmart story in commercials, where we see they continue to lie and “staying the course.” Throughout the documentary they look into struggling families and how Walmart is a big factor in that. The Hunter family ran a hardware store by the name of H&H Hardware and after serving there town for 48 years had to close down due to the arrival of Walmart. Numerous other Mom and Pop businesses will continue to close down due to Walmart and the ability they have to drop sales and also knock the value down on numerous items.
