I had the marvelous opportunity to speak with Cathy Gentry, Director of Business Operations for Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium. She has shown strong leadership in the 2 years I have known her. Cathy provided me with her experience in leadership through her time at Sloan and Longway as well as her own personal skills.
Cathy has incredible managing experience in all operations of a business. She studied communications with emphasis on event planning at Michigan State University. Cathy is also the President of The Junior League of Flint. The conversation was very insightful and provided me with what I believe to be a good framework for a successful business leader. Cathy gleams with energy and puts every ounce of energy into everything she does. She enjoys working with a variety of people and motivating the group in many different ways. Cathy shared a lot of information about how she provides leadership within her organization, but also her community. She has always had a high level of involvement within the community and shared this is what makes her tick. Having your hand in many buckets assists your personal and professional growth as well, having others to relate to from diverse backgrounds. She shared it is advantageous to have heads to bounce ideas off, as well as a way to share knowledge. In my interview with Cathy Gentry, I learned a great deal of information. She has a kind personality but able to offer sincere advice to her employees and everyone she meets. She carries herself with an approach that adapts to each individual within her organization. If I were to interview Cathy’s colleagues, I feel as though I would be given a warm response that shares the strong leadership sense I now have of her. Chad Miller, manager of Buffalo Wild Wings in Dubuque, excellently showcases leadership characteristics each time I work with him. Throughout my one and a half years working underneath him, I have witnessed many great exchanges of leadership from Chad to customers, employees, and his other managers. He remains professional, shows his passion for the sports within the restaurant, as well as the food and atmosphere, clearly communicates effectively, and has inspired many people to move up within the company. However, another great example of leadership comes from the Director of Student Life, Diversity, and Leadership of Northeast Iowa Community College, Kara Popp. She exudes professionalism, while maintaining a light atmosphere during the time I work with her. Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
This case study demonstrates a young woman leader, Toby Johnson, who used to serve in the military as a pilot and attended Harvard Business School, joined PepsiCo’s Leadership Development Program (LDP), and was working in the management team at the Williamsport plant. She determined to forge ahead, and led the plant to achieve the Level 3 CI and also won the Doolin Award, which the Williamsport plant had never achieved before. The problem that Johnson encounters currently is that if the plant should continue to forge ahead and achieve the ultimate Level 4 CI, which will cost huge amount of money and efforts with the risk of her sudden leave of plant.
The role of leadership has become increasing valuable for organizations to be successful. According to Huber (2014), Leadership can best be defined as method utilized to ensure that an objective is completed. There are many different types of leaderships that can be found within each organization. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. I will review my leadership self-assessment results and discuss the impact of leadership on staff and groups.
What determines a successful leader? Maybe it’s their talent and upbringing, or it might be something to do with their life experience and character. Either way, Prattville business owners Lori and Larry Bowdoin are the epitome of a successful, strong, and influential community leader. Through completely different childhoods and personalities, they come together each day to serve our community through business and spirituality, and their effect on me and how I hope to lead as I grow older is measureless. Their similarities and differences strengthen their characters and help their talents shine, and their success and determination as community leaders impresses even the most influential of people.
The assignment for week four is to assess and review results from the Authentic Leadership Self Assessment Questionnaire. The ALQ was created to provide a means to assess the parameters of authentic leadership and to allow for opinion on the behaviors that encompass Authentic Leadership Style (Northouse, 2013). Basically, the questionnaire and the model allows and individual to understand how followers or people perceive leadership authenticity.
During my interview with Regina Martinez, BS RN and currently an Assistant Director of a home health agency, I discovered her leadership style matched the above quote. Martinez had extensive experience in management prior to joining the medical field. As a single working mother, she worked her way up from waitress to manger of a popular seafood restaurant. However, her dream had always been to become a nurse and she began her medical career as a certified nurse’s aide (CNA), while working through college. She graduated from nursing school with a Bachelor’s degree in Science and has been a Registered Nurse (RN) for more than two decades. She quickly earned the respect of doctors and fellow nurses, becoming a Charge Nurse on the floors she worked. She has worked as Medical Surgery nurse, emergency room, and as Director of Nursing for home health and long-term care facilities where she was responsible for over 150 employees.
The role of leadership can impact an organization performance in many ways. Excellent leadership can propel a company to the fortune five hundred list. This class has provided some of the most extensive teamwork experience ever in my educational career. We were given an opportunity to hand picked our teammates after getting to know them and lock in a contract. This class allowed everyone to be put in a situation where we were forced to solve any conflicts occurred. Like every other group, our group has its own problems. Most of us are busy with work, and other activities; the group neglected the assignments till the last minute and then rush to work on it. The first group assignment, our group got a pass and received a good grade. However, the same habits reflected in our quality of our work on the second assignment with a low grade. Successful organizations have strong leaders and managers that develop, support, and encourage employee longevity within a company. There is a significant difference between leadership and management. Leadership is a notion of communication and organization’s vision, whereas management is more of the implementation of the organization’s vision. When referring leadership and management, the two are closely linked, yet both mean and hold different task and responsibilities. My interview subject, Michelle Farkas explains her understanding in the differences of supporting roles for supervisors, managers, and leaders. She also brings insight on her journey towards her career self-discovery. Farkas explains that from a very young age she was hard working and had ambition in becoming an inspirational leader.

Some supervisors and managers enthuse and stimulate, but most of them fail despondently to involve their workers and juniors. Although some of them run an extremely efficient team, yet their staff lives and works in panic, whereas, on the other hand, some are just supreme catastrophe and a gag to leaders all over. As far as a true leader in practical life is concerned; I will give this credit to my supervisor Colleen Watson, who is in a true sense a good administrator and role model in her professional career. She has an inspiring personality with all the characteristics to lead her team in a practical way. She is the person who has kept our team bound in a relationship as a family. Through her behavior, professional temperament, personal expertise and leading qualities, she actually knows how to lead the team.
Victoria is a young woman, whom posse’s exceptional leadership qualities. She demonstrates the attributes of a highly motivated leader to those that follow in her path. Her past history has proven to be productive and enjoyable for all members involved. Victoria is determined to set an example for young people to have a positive outlook on life. Victoria is well-focused, which enables her to function in a productive and effective manner. For that reason, she accomplishes tasks effectively. Kohl’s department store runs its operation as a team effort. Store manager, Audrey McCaskey, works with other employees and assistant managers of the store to come up with ways to improve their store’s performance.
