One general conclusion that can be drawn from a close look at communication theories is that communication shapes one's reality by enhancing life experiences. Communication is the shared process of using messages to construct and contribute in social reality. The parts of our lives that we derive the most meaning from are our individual identities, relationships, organizations, communities, cultures, and ideas, which are all intertwined through communication. Each of these is a part of social reality that emerges through social interaction, thus enhancing our life experiences. Communication empowers us to embody possibility, accomplish change and growth, both for ourselves and for others. It allows the opportunity for new experiences in future
Specifically, symbolic interactionism theory states that because people are symbolic creatures they can interpret and talk about their personal experiences, such as wishes and beliefs, thus improving and giving meaning to one's reality. Coordinated management of meaning theory states people form criteria for creating and understanding meaning enmeshed in a conversation by employing what action is appropriate to take. Finally, according to relational dialectics theory relational life is portrayed by ongoing tensions between contradictory impulses. Relational dialectics shows the process of conflicting desires using communication within a relationship to reconcile differences. These three theories support the premise that communication is necessary for a complete life experience by illustrating that through communication of meaning, understanding and intentions within interactions, realities are shaped and allowed to be enhanced through past and future
People in relationships frequently feel the pull-push of conflicting desires. Large components within this theory is that humans wish to have predictability and novelty, protectiveness and openness, autonomy and connection. Within a relationship people communicate in attempt to reconcile disputing desires, but they never completely lose their desire for both of the opposing pairs. Balance is vital in relational dialectics because it produces positive outcomes and is the reason that contradictions occur. Similarities and differences within a relationship are created and sustained by communication or dialogue. A main concept of relational dialectics is unity, to construct one's reality is a unified process created by every relationship maintained within one’s lifetime. Communication is necessary for such unity to occur, both within oneself and within the context of
A developed relationship can be interpreted as one where the couple is interdependent, tolerant, and dedicated. Equity allows a relationship to efficiently develop in this manner. Judith Viorst illustrates a poem depicting a couple’s struggles and their sacrifices for the other in “True Love”. In many points of the poem, the couple is compromising for the other’s flaws in order to avoid unnecessary conflicts. “I do not resent watching the Green Bay Packers / Even though I am philosophically opposed to football” (Stanza 1) is an example of the wife forcing herself
Harrington & Braithwaite suggest as cited by West & Turner “It is through communication practices that people achieve dialectical unity, or the way in which people are able to make contradictions feel complete and satisfactory.” (West & Turner, 2010, p.201) What I perceive to be may be something different, however, once someone shows me who they really are; I can only believe what I see. No matter what, I choose to have in my relationship it has to be simultaneously in nature. If I decide to have behavior control this can still lead to contradictions in my relationship even though, I may change that does not mean that the other person in the relationship will. My boyfriend’s views of the relationship seem to be quite different than
The relational turbulence model of Solomon and Knobloch (2004) explains why transitions causes turmoil in a relationship. Relational turbulence is the individual’s tendency to be cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally reactive to relationship
Specifically, the romantic love types and relational dialectics that define and influence our relational patterns. By understanding the makeup of the various dialectics and love types, we can better judge the underlying characteristics we exhibit in our own personal relationships and how to utilize that knowledge to positively influence our lives.
In every relationship there are good and challenging times. These are caused by many different things, but according to the Relational Dialectics Theory every relationship can be determined by the three basic dialectic tensions. These tensions are autonomy (independence) versus connectedness (has a need to belong), novelty (spontaneous) versus predictability, and openness versus closedness. Each person can fall into one of the two categories in each of the tensions. Figuring out which one of these that you fall into will help you understand how well your relationships work.
Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
Dialectical tensions exist in all relationships, and in order to fully understand them, we can analyze how and why they come to exist, how we deal with them, and the impact that they have on our relationships. In this paper I will be analyzing the relationship with my girlfriend, Katelyn. The three dialectical tensions I will be focusing on are autonomy and connectedness, which is the balance between individual independence and the need for connection between two people, novelty and predictability, the balance between new and exciting things and things that are familiar to the two people in a relationship, and lastly openness and closedness, the balance between being open with private information and choosing to
West, Richard, & Turner, Lynn H. (2000). Introducing Communication Theory: Analysis and Application. Mountain View, CA: Mayfield publishing.
Social interaction is the very basis of social life and the foundation of society. Further growth and progress in society would not be possible without interactions between individuals. However, the presence of an individual as a function of society does not bind them into a social unit. It is when a group of people cooperate that allows society to develop. Therefore, interaction is the very essence of social process. Furthermore, communication is the medium of interaction. The ability to communicate with other individuals is an important element of human life in terms of interacting and developing our society. Individuals thrive from success through the approval of others. In communication, an individual develops from the views and opinions of another person. It is important to consider that as a result of society's development, our system of communication also changed. While maintaining the traditional way of communicating such as physical interactions, individuals turn to other forms of socializing through the use of video games and the internet.
The information in this article is very helpful for my paper for various reasons. One of the main reasons is the fact that the information will help readers get a better understanding of how the theory itself helps different types of relationships. My situation involves misunderstanding in our relationship communication which is very similar to the couples in the articles. Having examples of how the Relational Dialectics Theory helps these couples in the article is helpful to implement into my research paper as well.
As previously mentioned Relational Dialectics looks at dialectical tensions. There are two different categories of dialectical tensions. Internal dialectics simply means the ongoing tension within a relationship versus external dialectics, which means the tensions between a couple and a community (Griffin, Ledbetter, & Sparks, 2015). Often times, these scholars pick a particular focus to analyze such as workplace, college, social media, or other types of settings and platforms where relationships are built and nurtured. In the article Relationships as dialogues Baxter (2004) says, “In being open to another person, one is willing to listen to him or her from that person’s perspective to display the receptivity to what the person has to say to be open to change in one’s own beliefs and attitudes” (p. 5-6).
How do we know when communication has served to strengthen relationships between people and expand individual viewpoints? When does communication reach beyond individual goals to promote and develop a sense of community? We can attempt to answer questions like these by exploring Martin Buber’s theory of Dialogue.
There is no doubt that conflict occurs in every human institution including professional, unions, and educational and vocational environment. However effective exchange ideas through communication can greatly minimize the effects of marital conflict. Studies have suggested that couples remain married if they successfully manage their interpersonal communication on the basis of accommodating individual differences, problem resolving skills, forgiveness, collective decision making, empathy and above all positive conflict management.

In some cases these distinctions seem trifling, yet when a contention triggers solid sentiments; a profound individual need is frequently at the center of the issue. These necessities can be a need to feel sheltered and secure, a need to feel regarded and esteemed, or a requirement for more prominent closeness and closeness.
