Applications of Symbolic Interactionism Theory
George Herbert Mead begins his discussion of symbolic interactionism (talking with others) by defining three core principles that deal with meaning, language, and thought. The theory states that meaning is the construction of social reality. Humans act toward people or things on the basis of the meanings they assign to those people or things.
The second principle of symbolic interactionism is language, which is the source of meaning. Meaning is negotiated through the use of language. For example, there is nothing small and furry about the word puppy. However, through symbolic interactionism we have learned to associate the word puppy with the real life animal.
The last principle is thought, or taking the role of the other. When we interpret symbols we do this through our own thought processes. Interactionists refer to this as "an inner conversation." People naturally talk to themselves to sort out meanings of situations. They often put themselves in another person's shoes and act as they would act. When we think about assignin...
Escaping from things is either good or bad. It either means you were brave enough to try or to cowardly to stay. The art of escape is one of many themes in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Using things such as the golem, comic books, and his character, Joe Kavalier, Micheal Chabon delivers this idea on a silver platter for the reader. Everyone wants to try and get away from the world and have an escape to make things right. Whether it be writing, drawing, exercising, or whatever lets you clear your head. It is important to just get away sometimes and make reality disappear for a while.
In order to effectively interpret the research and information provided by interviewees, I will be looking through the lens of symbolic interactionism. As defined in You May Ask Yourself, it is, "a micro-level theory in which shared meanings, orientations, and assumptions form the basic motivations behind people's actions" (Conley 2015). In terms of the American dream, this way of thinking perpetrates itself through shared meanings and the motivation of the assumption that the American dream is plausible. "The American dream's endurance attests to most Americans' insistence on the dream as an ideal, if not as a reality (Cohen-Marks 2011: 825). "
In sociology symbolic interactionism explains the individual in a society and their interactions with others and through that it can explain social order and change. This theory was compiled from the teachings of George Herbert Mead in the early 20th century. Mead believed that the development of the individual was a social process. People are subjected to change based on their interactions with other people, objects or events and they assign meaning to things in order to decide how to act. This perspective depends on the symbolic meaning that people depend on in the process of social interaction. This paper will examine the movie “The Blind Side” through the symbolic interaction perspective.
Chance. 50/50. 1:2. Odds. These terms are familiar in gambling. Bet it all give it a shot. Is it worth the consequences? Are the problems worth the rewards? Imagine a gamble between life and death, war and peace. Would it be worth the destruction to have your way? What would you do to keep a competitor out of the game? Going neck and neck to find a way around combat. Would the world be the same? What would happen if you lost? When tension between World War II grows, a gamble for nuclear arms rises, becoming the cold war.
As with most group projects, I started out with a basic understanding of the issue; essentially pollution and environmental changes humans make impact the environment in very bad ways. I grew up with a family who believes in intelligent design, young earth theory, and they all vehemently deny that anything humans do cause damage to the planet- everything reported in the news or by scientists are part of a larger “Liberal Democrat conspiracy.” Thus, my views had become largely hazy and even though I pride myself on being a Liberal, educated, intelligent young person, sometimes I was unsure what was actually true or what had been dramatized or exaggerated by scientists or the media to actually get people to pay attention. In addition, I also
First we are going to talk about probability theory, which has to do with mathematics and analysis of random phenomena. You are probably used to putting the number of outcomes over the total amount of the object or total amount what you have. An example is, if you have a normal dice and you want the probability of rolling an odd number, you would take the total amount of odd numbers (3) and put that over the total (6) amount of numbers on the dice like so 3/6 which you can also reduce it to ½ because 3 is half of 6. This theory has been around since the sixteenth century and started off as the outcome you would get in a game, which was created by Pierre de Fermat, Blaise Pascal and Gerolamo Cardano. Later on in the seventeenth century Christiaan Huygens published a book on the subject.
The Trans-Atlantic slave trade was the largest long-distance suppressed movement of people in history. The African Slave trade movement during the 17th century was instrumental for Europe’s suffering work force, as every aspect/stage of slave trade benefitted merchants. Because Africans had a reputation of being hard working, agriculturally knowledgeable, adaptable to climate, and resistant to disease, they were objectified and stripped of their identity as humans, and pushed to work without consent. The trans-Atlantic slave trade was a process of dehumanizing a group of people, in order to revamp the European economy.

The Atlantic Slave Trade that for three centuries caused pain and desolation to the African American people who traveled to the Americas against their own will. Were brought to a land where they would be seen, as slaves. The Atlantic Slave Trade origins and growth were a main part in the building of chattel slavery that was beginning in the United States. Due to Chattel slavery, the American ideologies of white domination and economy were shaped to be one of discrimination and injustice. Ignoring this the Europeans saw this as an expansion of power and meeting the needs of workforce demanded.
The sociology of everyday life focuses on studying people in their natural context, ie. the everyday social world. Social interactions is viewed as a fundamental aspect of understanding society and how social reality is constructed. The scrutiny of our social world in micro-sociology reveals that our everyday routines and social interactions produce an appearance of stability and continuity in our social life, when in fact, our social reality is profoundly fragile. This essay explores two different forms of sociological analysis, Symbolic Interactionism and Dramaturgy, through the arguments presented by George Herbert Mead and Erving Goffman respectively, and are both equally influential in their contributions to micro-sociology. Both sociologists
The law of probability, follows a random walk for which past event or pattern have no influence to predict the outcome yet under the concept of gambler’s fallacy , an individual predicts the outcome of a certain random event with negative auto correlation , meaning an individual under the influence of gambler’s fallacy would believe that the same outcome of an event is less likely to
Robert Frost wrote poetry about nature and it is that nature that he used as symbols for life lessons. Many critics have been fascinated by the way that Frost could get so many meanings of life out of nature itself. Frost‘s poetry appeals to almost everyone because of his uncanny ability to tie in with many things that one is too familiar with and for many, that is life in itself. “Perhaps that is what keeps Robert Frost so alive today, even people who have never set foot in Vermont, in writing about New England, Frost is writing about everywhere” (294).
The main points of the Symbolic Interactionism perspective is that symbols are what shape how we communicate and how we view the world. Our changing ideas affect how we understand and view different things around us. Without symbols society would be not be very coordinated, people wouldn’t be able to specify a specific time for school or where to meet for lunch. The main points of the Functional Analysis perspective, is that society is made up of several individual parts that work together for society to function properly. Each of these smaller parts has functions that are beneficial consequences of people actions and dysfunctions that are harmful and threaten the equilibrium. In this perspective the smaller parts are look at to see how they
In the first three months, the development begins. As a newborn, we are completely dependant on others, but the baby has many skills that are imperative in order to communicate. We have a cry, reflexes, and brain capable to recognize routine. In the social aspect, we stare at who is feeding us and enjoy baths and other routine activities, and we begin to smile. Physically, our legs are not strong enough to hold any weight. We can something such as rattle, but cannot at it simultaneously. Also, we can hold our head by ourselves. On an emotional sense, we would quiet to the sound of a familiar voice and show excitement when handled and distress to loud noises. On language, the baby would stop crying to the sound of a rattle, turn our head to any sound, and make noise when happy. Intellectually, we are very alert and will follow with our eyes and we love to play with our hands. In only three months we have learned so many different truths about ourselves, our family, and our surroundings.
Probability is always surrounding us from stock markets to the ever-simple heads or tails. This very complicated area of mathematics can be explained in a simpler way. It is how likely an event is to happen. The probability of an event will always be between 0 and 1. The closer it is to one, the more likely the event is to happen.
