During this semester I have had the chance to gain more knowledge and apply what I have learned to my field experience. I enjoyed having the chance to work with these students in summer school because it allowed me to see why they are struggling. Most of them just needed more guided practice and more attention to the subject. My tutee showed me how important it is to consider the seven critical factors, apply my knowledge from inside and outside of the college of education, and allowed me to analyze my global awareness of my surroundings. My tutee did not trouble with much, in fact, he understood everything just needed more guidance to follow all the instructions and to stay on task. Since I have matured and aged, I have realized and gained more knowledge of these subjects and because of that I will be well prepared for any student that enters my classroom. My applied learning experience has allowed me to encounter a classroom from a different aspect and it also allowed my own knowledge to grow more. For example, before my summer field experience I was never in a ELL classroom. This allowed me to value my global surroundings because I was allowed to learn from this and gain knowledge. Another example for why I value my global awareness is because I had the chance to see how students are thinking and learn from it. This let me practice my teaching skills and slowly progress in small groups with these students. The last example for why I value my global awareness is because during my field experience I encountered how to work with students who spoke a different language than my mentor teacher. At some points during the day the students would speak in Spanish and although my mentor teacher knew some Spanish to sometime make out what the student is saying, it was rare for her to be able to actually understand them. This experience allowed me to value my global awareness more because she showed me how to still allow her students to be success regardless of the teacher and student diversity. She was still accountable for their success and knowledge and with the language conflict sometime, she never stopped trying and never let her students fall behind. I value my global awareness so much more now because that allowed me to critical think about the situation I will face as a teacher. As I carry on my studies in Elementary Education, The field experience assignment has been a learning and growing experience for me. This semester I did five hours in a physical education class and during my experience I learned a lot. As I spoke to the Physical Education teacher Ms. Hines, she informed me that this school year was a tough year for her. From all her classes she had two classes were a couple of kids who had disabilities and the rest of the students were only Spanish speakers. The teacher only spoke English, which caused some difficulties describing her lesson of the day to her students.
I have become much more flexible in my approach in dealings with others thanks to the guidance of my Principal and Mentor. I am much more willing and open to pursue different avenues to build and maintain trusting relationships with staff. I’ve worked one-on-one and presented several teachers with new ideas and strategies for ensuring all students can meet objectives, but have different ways of demonstrating them. I’ve facilitated and worked alongside the Science Department as they rolled out a new cross-curricular project with our Math team, which required a conglomerate of teacher communication and learning
The field placement experience at Silver Saddle group home allowed me the opportunity to put into practice what I have learned while in the Social Work program her at Northern Arizona University. Throughout field placement I have had the opportunity to practice on a micro, mezzo, and macro level and strengthen my professional social work skill while maintaining a ethical standpoint. Field has also allowed me hands on experience to advocate for clients, insure social justice, provide services, and build strong relationships with clients and the community.
I learned through this field experience that parks play an important role in managing water in a community. They offer chances to showcase good land use practices by offering an easy, low cost way to involve local individuals and demonstrate the value of green spaces.
My main field experience this semester was in Ms. Schreyer's third grade math class at Trinity South. I was in the classroom on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 12:00 and Thursdays from 10:30 to 2:00. When in Ms. Schreyer's class, I observed two different groups of students because of the way the class rotations work. The first group that I observed is Ms. Schreyer's homeroom. There are 17 students in her homeroom class, and four of them have IEPs for either learning support or emotional support. On Tuesdays I arrived as the students arrived, so I was able to see the morning routine. I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
The field experience report identifies some of the strategies learned, some observations that were made, and also includes research-based information studied in this course. In this report, the research-based information is used to explain about the observed lessons, and some of the perspectives. I feel that this field experience innovative, highly informational, and it taught many strategies. Over the past six weeks observing and teaching in this fifth grade class were motivational and educational, therefore, I was able to reflect on my teaching strategies within my own classroom.
A requirement of a few of the education classes offered at the University of North Georgia is to complete 20 hours of “field experience.” In the past, I have fulfilled these requirements in an actual school doing one-on-one “mentoring” with students. For this class, I decided to volunteer at a summer day camp for a few days. I was surprised to see how many connections to education I was able to make throughout the course of that experience.
As the time approached, my attitude toward student-teaching was one of confidence and in some ways overconfidence. I believed that I was equipped with all of the tools necessary to be a superior teacher. Little did I know what truly goes on behind the scenes of a teacher. Between grading papers, attending meetings, and preparing lessons, I would often feel overwhelmed. Still, student teaching would prove to be much more valuable than I anticipated. It would teach me to appreciate the wisdom of mentors and experienced teachers, value or being organized and prepared, and lastly the resilience of students.
The job of a teacher is never easy but we have seen how cooperative discipline and enabling students to feel capable, connected and contributing can improve classroom management and maybe even our own moods. If we create an environment of mutual respect and give our students legitimate power of voice and choice in the classroom we will see positive results in improved student behavior and student achievement. Because when our students believe that they can succeed, they will.
To begin, we need to understand the nature of students. The nature of students varies between individuals. The majority of students are well-behaved and come to school ready to learn. Part of this is due to the way they have been raised, but most students are basically good. There is a small percent of students whose nature, it seems, is to make everyone miserable. I do not know if this is because of a difficult childhood at home or because the student just likes to be the center of attention. Either way, there are always students that will give their teachers a hard time. I guess this is their nature. Every individual is different, therefore, the nature of the students I will teach some day will be different depending on their background and other various things that may happen to them as they grow up. For example, a student that has lost a sibling due to an illness or accident, may become very bitter throughout life. The nature of this student’s behavior which is being shaped by this may make this student a cold-hearted and mean student. These are the students that teachers need to spend extra time with and try to make them feel loved, no matter how hard this may be. I, as a future teacher, need to look at students and try to help them out no matter how difficult that may be.
This being my first year of teaching I feel there are so many things that I have learned, and have helped me too become a good teacher. Yet I have so much more to learn, I still believe that students have the ability to learn and as a teacher it is my job to find ways to help them to become the best person they can be. Through being a reflective teacher, using professionalism, respecting diversity and having collaboration and community connecting this can be accomplished. When I am having fun teaching the student will have learning that material, this will help them to be relaxed and engaged in that lesson. I feel it is important to connect what they are learning to things that they have experienced in the real-world.
In education 2130, we are ask to volunteer our time and do field experience that in return would give back to the community. I choose to do my field experience at Lula Elementary School in Hall County. During my time there I got to observe and watch teachers teach, how they handle children’s behavior and also their classroom management. In the paper I am going to discuss my field experience and what I learned in my time spent in a classroom.
