Learning is a process that involves effort and hard work, but it definitely pays off in the long run. Once a foundation is set on how to become a better student, the student with the foundation is set up for success. A student should be taught methods on how to become better at concepts related to success attained at the college level because it helps the student out so much once he or she knows how to effectively study. While studying might seem tedious and overwhelming at time, it can be proven to be instrumental if a person knows how to effectively do it and get the most out of it. At the beginning of this class, we were introduced to concepts such as critical thinking and diversity, and I learned about them but did not fully understand the big picture until recently. It is not the mere skill of being able to think critically and having the ability to accept others who are different than yourself that matters, but the thing that matters is the fact that these skills allow you to become more open minded about various things and give you the ability to constantly improve yourself. I completely agree with this because we learn things every day sometimes without directly realizing it. Learning never truly ends, and the things we learn, such as facts, may dwell in our short term memory for a while and eventually disappear, but our brain does expand and can potentially recall the information if it is reviewed. I agree that some facts directly related to your intended field of study should be stored in the long term memory rather than short term memory since it relates to your life outside of college and outside of a particular institution. Knowledge that will be applicable to your life outside of college like a specific career such as teaching should be the things most focused on during one’s academic life; however, other things should be learned as well in order to lay the groundwork and establish the basis foundation of a particular subject. I think that even once our education is completed we never truly cease to learn since we learn from other people, ourselves, and we continue to take in information from external sources rather it be from a book or website. As Zig Ziglar once said, "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." Basically, Ziglar is emphasizing how learning can be accomplished, only if you put your mind to it. In “Learning (Your First Job),” Dr. Robert Leamnson shares his strong belief of beginning students entering the post-secondary education. Leamnnson discusses the many ways of learning that can be used in college, such as studying, notes, assignments, and exams. Leamnson continuously discusses how no one will learn unless they want to. Learning is a biological process that relies on the brain. Just like how our bodies need maintenance, the brain does too. College is a place where you learn things that help you later. Leamnson mentions how students are responsible for succeeding in college not by just showing up, but by putting in effort towards the classes they are taking. In order to succeed in the learning of the post-secondary education process, students should be aware of how to make notes, understand what they are studying, and take assignments seriously.
The article, “Critical Thinking? You Need Knowledge” by Diane Ravitch, discusses how in the past people have been deprived from the thinking process and abstract thinking skills. As the former president of Harvard University, Derek Bok wrote “The most obvious purpose of college education is to help students acquire information and knowledge by acquainting them with facts, theories, generalizations, principles, and the like. General education classes are focused on expanding the intellectual horizon of students. Many of the classes for general education don’t have anything to do with specific career choices but are required regardless. While this seems to be nice and good on the surface, it has problems. If colleges only cared about letting students expand their horizons instead of helping people graduate in a timely manner, there would be many more “college surfers”. Those people go to college aimlessly in order to pass the time. They do not have a definite goal and are not able to get a degree in order to graduate and contribute as a member of society. The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) has several characteristics, including truth seeking and open mindedness (Laird). We live in a very competitive world where, in general, people are more educated. Therefore, college education is essential to the future of our generation. The higher the education, the higher are the chances of getting a nice job. For me, education is not only important to implement my knowledge, but also to improve my communication and leadership skills, and helps me to become more confident with myself, and it also impacts in my decision-making. College is not the end of the journey. Students need to be reminded constantly that their learning will continue on into their careers and life. I believe it is important to first analyze the word diversity when examining the need for diversity within a classroom. According to Webster's New Pocket Dictionary, diversity means variety, a number of different kinds. I often discuss and read about diversity in terms of cultural backgrounds; the unification of histories and stories from people from all over the world. Although, I believe that in a higher-educational setting, diversity can also be discussed as the acceptance of the various minds within a classroom. I believe that it is important to recognize the thoughts and experiences of others in a learning environment. Collectively, students learn from teachers, teachers learn from students, and students learn from their peers. By allowing diversity within the classroom, a sense of community can develop. Diversity encourages an active, not passive, learning style. I believe that the culture of Columbia College Chicago is dependent on diversity.
