Feezeela Raza – Diversity management Lessons in life are constantly learned in many ways. The things each individuals need to learn and give light towards are things they are doing to adapt within society. Due to the way that our society is always showing signs of changes, individuals need to figure out learn to identify and acknowledge diversity. By hearing Feezeela Raza in class shared her thoughts and experiences on diversity , I tend to picked up valuable insight into diversity , how they are being treated and also how to completely acknowledge all people dealing with diversity issues , in all situations. In respect to diversity, one may wonder, “What is diversity?” Diversity is defined as all the ways in which employees differ. Diversity

Racial diversity is not always accepted and in some cases has resulted in violence. “The most highly publicized racial incidents, ranging from verbal harassment to beatings, occurred at some of the most elite institutions in the country.”(Hurtado, Sylvia) Violence toward racial diversity has made it hard to promote diversity but despite the violence and rejection toward diversity there are still those who support and defend diversity. “In many cases student organize protest as a direct response to these problems, or to express solidarity with students suffering similar problems at other institutions.”(Hurtado, Sylvia) Because there are still those who believe in and support diversity proves that people can and will eventually come around to accepting it.
Traditionally, diversity refers to an assortment of races, ethnicities, genders, ages, disabilities and perhaps sexual orientations. A definition of diversity, however, should not be constrained by traditional categories such as these. Such a definition should also include categories such as religion, educational level, life experience, geographic location, socio-economic background, marital status and work experience. Indeed, each person employed by a company possesses unique qualities that encompass many factors.
The impact of diversity in the workplace is contingent upon several factors. Across companies diversified workforces are becoming increasingly common. To successfully manage a diverse workforce, organizations are ensuring that employees understand how their values and stereotypes influence their behavior toward others of different gender, ethnic, racial, or religious backgrounds; are gaining an appreciation of cultural differences among themselves; and behaviors that isolate or intimidate minorities are being improved (Noe et al., 2010, pg. 302).
In summary, most workplaces are becoming increasingly diverse as people from different genders, races, cultures, ethnic origins, and lifestyles find themselves working together. The key to making diversity work is management. Knowing what they are and understanding what effects (positive or negative) they have on the organization is very important to the success of the company.
Workforce diversity is a new term in business and industry. It is a term that is still uncommon in various areas of the world. Diversity can be considered by taking two different perspectives. Firstly, there are those fundamental individual attributes that make everyone on the earth unique for example disability, personality among others. Secondly, there are those differences that exist based on group membership for example race, ethnicity, and cultural differences among others (Barak, 131). Diversity is being an associate of either an indiscernible or discernible groups that are believed to be mainstream in the society (Barak, 131).

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (n.d.) defines diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of differing elements; especially, the inclusion of different types of people (as people of different races or cultures) in a group or organization”. In general, diversity is often only related with differences in race and gender. In actuality, numerous elements can determine diversification in the workplace. Elements such as skills, abilities, experience, values, age, and education could be part of a diverse footprint in an organization. Other important attributes related to diversity include disabilities, religion, sexual orientation, and marital status (Guillame et al., 2013). The adoption of diversity in the workplace has the potential to increase organizational effectiveness in many ways. Organizations that practice diversity tend to increase their capacity to innovate and make better decisions.
The researcher believes, in this fast-changing era, any kind of company or organization should be able to improve the quality of workplace diversity by having some important main factor to boost the new paradigm of a diverse workplace, such as:
Diversity is all around us and how organizations deal with the notion of diversity can be complex and quite diverse. We know that being diverse in the workplace is important to the organization's success, should be recognized, accepted, and embraced. It’s how the organizations live up to what they believe in and must go above and beyond legal compliance and requirements to promoting diversity and inclusion. Otherwise, employees may view the organization's vision and policies as lip service and only be tolerant of diversity because the organization said so.
At the beginning of this class, we were introduced to concepts such as critical thinking and diversity, and I learned about them but did not fully understand the big picture until recently. It is not the mere skill of being able to think critically and having the ability to accept others who are different than yourself that matters, but the thing that matters is the fact that these skills allow you to become more open minded about various things and give you the ability to constantly improve yourself. Critical thinking and diversity all play a role in the notion that learning is lifelong, and that statement is regarded as true because we,as humans, truly never stop learning from day
Now that we have explored my past, present, and future experiences with diversity, it is time to see how they are present within and effect each other. Firstly, let’s look into how my future is present in my past. The most obvious portion of my future that is in my past is my willingness and efforts to love and include everyone and to spread this world view. It took a fellow classmate of mine to demonstrate to my third grade self that we are all human beings and we all deserve to be treated as such. In my future, I aspire to demonstrate this world view to my students and inspire them to treat each other accordingly. This aspiration directly reflects my world view struggles I went through in third grade, for I want to help my students come to
I read the Stem Diversity Awareness article as well as watched the Ted Talk where Jedidah Isler spoke about how students of color face racism as well as challenges that could impact their futures. I thought and agreed with everything Isler spoke about. I think it’s absolutely true that our society still excludes and distinguishes people of color. Isler mentioned how a man at their lunch table pushed all the dishes towards her and told her to basically make herself useful. It’s truly unfortunate that our society thinks things like this are appropriate and okay.
