Throughout the first semester we did a group project. My group and I struggled interviewing a professor because it would be an excited, fun and educational videos. From the very beginning, there were some obstacles standing between us and reaching our goal. We had to set up meetings with our career field. During this time it was hard trying to set similar times where you and the professor could schedule an interview together. Once we got that settled down we came to another obstacle with getting the cameras. When we started to record they found out that the way we were approaching this project was not what we were trying to accomplish. As a result, we changed our project completely. By taking this class, she took her seminar project and started the Women in Leadership conference. Former HSU student and alumni who took the course were welcome to come together and learn about leadership, what it meant, how it affect them, and how to use those roles in the future.
I also had the ability to help Ryanne with interviewing the civil rights class. Students were able to tell us why they showed interest in doing the class as well as what the class had to offer. It is one thing to have the knowledge of “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive”. What I am persistent to do with that knowledge is what is important. My biggest take away is that I need to get on the balcony. By being on the balcony I can see that is it really the bold guy with the dance moves who starts the party, not the DJ. Silly to me that I never realized that is where I needed to be, that is where people could find me in a real life party. A year from now I hope that is still where I will be, looking for new data and learning more about myself in new circumstances. There will always be more to learn, although every once in a while I will have to intervene in situations that will make me uncomfortable. To carry on improving on the skills I picked up during the course of this class, it will be crucial for me to reevaluate the goals I set for myself. I plan to reset them all and provide myself with a timeline to achieve the goals. KU offers a minor in leadership studies and this classes is the foundation for all of those leadership classes to come. This class will be impossible to forget as I move forward in complete my minor. The reading assignment for this unit included reading several articles and one book in particular, The Female Advantage, by Sally Helgesen as an introduction into varying leadership styles. Leadership, as a honed craft is practiced continually in different ways and varying circumstances, no two individuals will have the same leadership style. Certain distinctive traits brought into the forum and on display for followers to observe. Some traits can be visible, clothing or skin color as examples, others, however, are not as visible such as upbringing or family situation. Each of these factors could play a role in the leadership style of a leader. One trait that the author of the book uses to distinguish leaders is gender. As much as men and women must be treated the fairly and equally, it cannot be denied that outside of the biological aspect, men and women are slightly different. Each gender brings a unique approach to leadership situations.
Leadership is a complex idea that is often is hard to define. Everyone seems to have different characteristics that they feel contribute to a good leader. Even though there is no straightforward definition of leadership, there are still certain personality traits, behaviors, skills, and motivators that people admire in a leader. The best example to show how leaders utilize these characteristics is to examine a prominent figure in pop culture, such as Beyoncé. Her life is transparent enough that we can analyze her leadership skills, and how they change in any given situation. Beyoncé’s impact as a leader will be analyzed in three different categories.
The "glass ceiling" has held women back from certain positions and opportunities in the workplace. Women are stereotyped as part-time, lower-grade workers with limited opportunities for training and advancement because of this "glass ceiling". In Units 1-4, there is a demonstration of components that make up the individualistic atmosphere of a team, group, or employees. As a high school student at the time, I had to remember my ability to contribute to the student government in my strongest areas. These all led to the motivational factor of the group. We were motivated by the fact that we as a group could create school activities that were successful only if our efforts were successful. I was able to learn things about myself as a leader in what I could improve on, what can stay, and what needed to be left out. Leadership opportunities may feel intimidating at first but they have the capacity to provide major breakthroughs in one’s own ability to change not only their lives but also the lives of others. Positive experiences in leadership do not have to be sporadic but when they are negative they can cause a permanent or hard to change opinion of disliking group work. In the entrepreneurship, business, or corporate workforce, work ethic is collective and is depended upon the make-up of a company. If one takes a closer look at the issues surrounding the differences between the male and female roles in the workforce and in education, one will notice that women tend to be one step below men on the "status" or "importance" ladder.
For this assignment I was having difficult time getting an informational interview in the documentaries production industry. Therefore, I interview three individual who are in the career field of information technology, senate, and accounting. I just asking them basic questions since I couldn’t get to specific with my career that focus on the production industry. Women do have different leadership styles from men. As Bodyshop founder Anita Roddick says: ‘I run my company according to feminine principles – principles of caring, making intuitive decisions, not getting hung up on hierarchy, having a sense of work as being part of your life, not separate from it; putting your labour where your love is, being responsible to the world in how you use your profits; recognising the bottom line should stay at the bottom’.
All people deserve the right of education equality no matter gender, race or financial income. According to the daily star, by 2015 only seventy percent of countries will have achieved equality between the sexes in primary education and fifty six percent will have achieved equality in lower secondary education. Education equality is one of the main problems in school systems.
Furthermore, I encourage everyone including men to have an open mind, where everyone is seen equal to each other. Women should not have to be treated differently or get paid less than the man. I believe that all men should see how valuable and important women are, especially in the work force. As I have noticed, there are many men that do not care, and that is evident for student that signed up for this course. Women should not force themselves to perform beyond what they are already capable of, dress a certain way or even talk assertive; they should be respected just as every other person next to her, even men. To sum it all up, a leaders is someone who inspires, motivates, and encourages a group, community or country regardless of their gender or sex.
I have a lot of experience in many things from education, customer service so forth and to end with parenting, so I have several styles of influence, power and leadership and all of which I have used, just not in this order. To influence is the capacity of the power of a person’s things in which they may be compelling force or able to produce effects and actions. Power means the ability to act or the capability of doing to accomplish something, as in the lecture power is the ability to marshal resources. Leadership is the function or position to direct or guide a group or groups of people, or as the lecture states the process of inspiring and guiding others to participate. It is my personal opinion that with all these styles a person still needs self-management as discussed in this semester as well. You cannot have someone that may has influence, power and leadership, yet lacks self-awareness. How can they lead a pack? My previous jobs have many individuals that portrayed to be leaders whom pretended to have power that influenced us, however they lacked self-management, and all of the above.
My role as an ethnographic interviewer and researcher was difficult for me. This is because I am a very shy person, but I had to learn to step out of my comfort zone in order to interview a complete stranger. If I had an opportunity to redo the interview I would have practiced with someone I do know so that I would not feel as uncomfortable. Overall this project was educational and I would happily do it again.
