Coach Carter Kevin L Nimmo National University Introduction The story of a brave coach, is what I would describe the movie “Coach Carter. I admire him as a person because he cares about the academic success of his students. When I first saw the film I was drawn to it because I could relate to it. All of the kids that went to that school were considered urban or inner city and that’s how I grew up. Its important to be pleasant and respectful when you are around the team members, it doesn’t mean that you have to hang out or socialize with one another but having common mutual respect is important for team cohesiveness. Dependability is one of the most important traits that make an effective team member. If an assignment needs to be completed and your team is depending on you pick up the slack and do your part. Another example that I have to share is regarding conflict within the team it disrupts morale and creates problems. One day in our warehouse on base two of my junior personnel weren’t getting along with one another in front of the team so I intervened by pulling them both aside and counseled them both letting them know that their actions are unacceptable and not helping the team. Having respect for your colleagues is important for a team to be successful. Communication is crucial to being an effective team member because you must be supportive and know how to share your thoughts and ideas. I am a firm believer in giving credit when credit is due regardless of how I may feel about an individual or group. Everyone should be recognized for their efforts, ideas, and work done to fulfill a goal. For example, I work with another team on patient engagement initiatives for the patient portal. Although we may often disagree, I give them praise for organizing meetings, facilitating presentations, and providing my team with the clinical questions from the enterprise teams. In addition, I exercise humility through the transfer of knowledge. For instance, I know that I am adept in public speaking, problem solving, and marketing. However, I am not analytical nor an expert in Microsoft Excel or information technology. I utilize the skills of my peers and associates to better understand these areas in exchange for sharing my own skills. I view my team members as peers with a goal of working collectively. As Robert E. Kelley (1988) states, “Good followers see coworkers as colleagues rather than competitors”
Laying down in your bed, you hear this consistent knocking. You try to sleep through it but it seems as if it will never quit. Curious, you roll out of bed away from the comfort of your wife’s warm body but cautiously move closer, step by step downstairs into the direction of the sound. Each step you take wondering whether or not your house is being robbed. You finally ease your way downstairs and quickly flip the light switch only to find your home empty and totally void of any damage or evidence of a theft of any kind; however, you still hear the sound. You notice it’s coming from your front door, but its 3 A.M. on a school night. The hairs on the back of your neck begin to rise and your heart beats faster, wondering who is violently knocking on your front door. You remember the incident at your store where a brick was thrown through the window and how you angered the community by canceling a game and blemishing a season with such a historical start. You pull the shade back on the front door, revealing not an angered parent, but Timo Cruz, once a player on your basketball team that you haven’t seen for weeks, covered in blood. You hastily unlatch the door and invite him in. At first sight, he begins muttering the events leading up to him now covered in his cousin’s blood. He tells how he scared off some bullies for the other players on the basketball team with the gun in his waistline, but only to witness his cousin slaughtered from across the street.
The movie Coach Carter is an American Drama based on a true story of a Basket Ball coach and his team from Richmond High School. Coach Ken Carter portrayed by Samuel L Jackson and directed by Thomas Carter. Coach Ken Carter was a successful basketball champion athlete during his school days. Before accepting the job as a coach for his old high school Ken Carter use to run a sporting goods store successfully and was planning to open another store but then he got the job offer to become a basketball Coach and he accepted the offer.
Even by just watching this movie, I felt the strong understand of challenging yourself for the better instead of going with the status quo of failure. Instead of accepting what seems to come for you, change your future, because every moment counts. And just because you may not win every time, doesn’t mean you didn’t learn anything. You could’ve learned education, self worth, and individuality within a team. Now you’ve won something that could change a person for a lifetime. And that’s why I really enjoyed this movie. I enjoyed the opportunities to interpret the obvious messages differently. That’s why someone else might get a different vibe out of the Coach Carter. And that’s more than I could hope for in a movie.
The competencies of the team is about the team ability to respond and solve problems, ability to communicate, solve problem or manage conflicts, and ability to make decisions. It is important for the team to create an environment that allows its members to articulate their goals. It is important that team members ensure and understand how their work contributes towards team goals. Also team member should make effective necessary decisions; communicate with other team members; give and receive necessary feedback; form trust; and resolve conflicts or disagreements.
A team player must have a tremendous personality to be successful. A tremendous personality includes being friendly, tactful, and diplomatic. A friendly personality is good to help keep the other players in harmony. It is imperative to have a friendly personality so others will not be afraid to approach the team player with a problem. Being friendly to others will directly affect the tactfulness used in talking with other people. A team player that is tactful will always have the respect of the people around him/her. When a team player has the respect of the people around him/her, it will have a positive impact on any conflict that he/she must mediate when they arise on a team. The diplomatic skills a team player possesses will help bring any disputes that other players might have with someone to a quick conclusion. This is essential in keeping the team on a successful track.
Aside from being an expert juggler, the ability to work well with others is a crucial part of most social interactions, as we are forced to interact with individuals in our social and personal realm. Active listening and an open dialogue are the keys to good communication. This has helped me to fulfill my obligations as a team member.
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
For this I have developed the characteristic of being honest and true to my words, to bring the environment of just and fairness. I gave due respect to all players, so they can trust ne and start thinking for team’s benefits. Essentially, as a coach my motto in this regard was “equal rewards for equal performance.” I gave my team members full confidence to speak-up when they have any kind of issue. In this prospect some of my senior coaches also helped me in becoming a good leader and coach. They provided their complete guidance and support which helped me in a lot in achieve my goal. They also helped in developing right kind of attitude that influenced the behavior of all the athletes. As leaders are individuals who significantly affect the thoughts and behavior of others, not through coercion but rather through persuasion. So by adopting this positive attitude I became successful in resolving all the conflicts in the players. One of the biggest challenge which I had faced being a leader was to select a strong and competent captain because it is very difficult situation when a captain is not a solid player. Effective communication encompasses many concepts. For a leader to be effective, one must be able to build relationships between different parties. In order to build a good rapport, one must be able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of those involved, and within oneself. Acknowledging these differences will allow for a better collaboration between team members. A leader must also have the ability to put conflict resolution theories into practice. Allowing differing points of view may challenge the original idea and will make for a more thorough decision making process. Although this may seem counterproductive, it actually ensures the best possible outcome. One must be consistent in the message presented yet be flexible, approachable and maintain a positive attitude. Allowing for different perspectives to be heard will allow team members to feel valued. This flexibility helps to solidify the concept that everyone is in this together; thus establishing an environment where all team members can have a buy-in. The team members should know how important a project is to the company and stride to achieve the goals in a professional manner. Each member should contribute one hundred and ten percent of their input to the group to make the project the best that it can be. Every member of the team should be rewarded individually for their performance, insights, and total input that is beneficial to the team. Communication is the key to a productive team. Not only is teamwork working together physically, but it also involves having an open mind to receive and understand opinions, perceptions, comments, and concerns from your fellow teammates. In addition to an open mind teamwork requires that you as a fellow member are flexible and willing to compromise. For example, in some cases things may not go the way that you think they should. However, you must be willing to go along with the idea for the purpose of the greater good. Lastly, teamwork means to be respectful. It is imperative that every member of that team feels valued in order to ensure minimal group conflicts. Overall, teamwork is more than just working together.
Each member is comfortable in finding their place and can feel a sense of belonging within the team. As a team member, I portrayed the roles of a team player and a researcher. I may not be the brain of the group, but I was very eager to help and became a reliable member that follows-through on tasks to resolve conflicts. Also, I became a researcher too, at some point. I formulated various questions and gathered the information and data from the group. According to Sussex (2013), a researcher “is always asking a question and then finding their own answers.” She also stated in her blog that a team player is someone that the team could rely on because they are eager to help and resolve a conflict in a very calm way.
