The movie Coach Carter is an American Drama based on a true story of a Basket Ball coach and his team from Richmond High School. Coach Ken Carter portrayed by Samuel L Jackson and directed by Thomas Carter. Coach Ken Carter was a successful basketball champion athlete during his school days. Before accepting the job as a coach for his old high school Ken Carter use to run a sporting goods store successfully and was planning to open another store but then he got the job offer to become a basketball Coach and he accepted the offer.
But he was disappointed by the behaviour and poor attitudes of his players. Then he decided to impose some strict rules on his team members in terms of contract and tell them about his clear expectation from his team like maintain the GPA of (2.3), dress code, attending classes regularly, seat in front bench of the class and respectful behaviour towards your team and Coach because he also call his team members as “Sir”, and he requires them to do the same. Evan when everyone was against his decision when he locked up the gym because he stand up for what he believe best for his team. If one fails, everyone fails. If one doesn’t show up to train or didn’t show up on time then everyone suffers. He made everyone accountable for each other’s and this makes them understand that teamwork is important for making things easier and quicker to reach the goal in life that they cannot reach that goal by trying on their own. The positive attitude towards his team and remain focused to achieve his aim of transforming the team to having a successful carrier or future not only in basketball also in studies, and therefore remain consistent in his leadership style.

Ronald Buckley, Corey Cagle and Foster Roberts, the leadership principles of Walter Osborne that I can further develop and add to my leadership toolbox are: clarifying team norms and developing shared understanding. From my experience in the military, successful teams are those that work in concert with each other to accomplish the objective as a team. Everyone has their part to play similar to a how a pack of wolves survives in the wild.
The Varsity team lost to the JV team because they did not work together as team. Though the Varsity team consisted of high performing individuals for speed, strength, and endurance but together they lacked the cohesiveness to perform as a single unit. Also among them there were a lot of internal conflicts cropping up like blaming each other, lack of trust and confidence in the ability of others etc., which were not identified, or resolved at appropriate time. Each one did not believe he was working as a part of the team; rather they tried to maximize their individual capabilities alone. In addition the Varsity team lacked a strong leader, mostly people were disruptors.
In the book, "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, he talks about the importance of a teacher and coach as a role model for kids. He talks about his successes he had in coaching, the lessons he has learned, and the ones he has taught. In the book, you will get to walk through his life from when he was a little kid and first fell in love with basketball to when he retired from active coaching at UCLA in 1975. He also talks about his "Pyramid of Success" and the traits that every player should have.
Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. Jimmy was an icon in the sports world not only for his coaching ability. He taught the world that leaders need a vision, leaders need to connect with their followers, and that leaders learn from their followers. Jimmy defied the rules and transformed his players into exceptionally good players and even better people. He taught more than basketball to his players and reached outside of his coaching arena to touch the lives of people across the world.
Coach Norman Dale embodied a number of personal characteristics which enabled him to be the quality leader he was in the movie Hoosiers. His toughness, optimism, motivation, farsightedness, and self confidence assisted Coach Dale in gaining the loyalty of the team and the attention of the town. They also helped him to change the losing ways of the early team into the state champion team they ended up to be. Additionally, a number of environmental factors played a role in his success. The almost religious fervor of basketball in Indiana, the quasi-anarchist environment of the town’s men, and the fact that Hickory was a small town all played vital roles in Coach Dale’s success.

People like winners. Many have the philosophy that the underdog should win occasionally. In game of basketball, everyone loves a Cinderella story. Coach Mike Krzyzewski affectionately known as Coach K usually beats all who come in his path on the basketball court. Coach K teaches about life and leadership; his motto is commitment, discipline, honesty, integrity, collective response, pride, love, and friendship.
“Be more concerned with you character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” These words of John Wooden are just a few out of many wise quotes millions of people, not just athletes, are inspired by today and likely will continue to be inspired by for a very long time. Basketball fans and experts consider John Wooden as one of, if not, the greatest coaches of all time. Much of his success is a result of his beliefs and coaching system. Knowing the background of Coach Wooden’s playing and coaching career plays a significant role in understanding how he practiced his beliefs with his teams and how his philosophy and success intertwined to set a precedent for the remainder of collegiate basketball.
Finally, Don Haskins was a leader. Don lead by example and others followed in his footsteps. When he showed the world that black athletes could do whatever white athletes can, other coaches recognized their ability. For example, Adolph Rupp, who coached Kentucky in the 1966 championship, drafted his first black player in 1969, Tom Payne. This was a big deal considering that Adolph Rupp played all white people all the time.
A proper coaching philosophy contains principles which improve character development, teach step by step tactical and technical skills, form proper progressive physical training regimens, and carefully utilize team management to handle and control problems with administrative issues. A coach with a sound philosophy should mold a team with strong cohesion, and he should treat players not only as teammates, but as family and friends who are encouraged to develop communication and lifelong learning of skills through positive support and role modeling from the coach (Mergelsberg, 14-15). The philosophy should also contain written documents of implemented strategies and techniques, so that the coach will know what to improve upon season by season

Coach Carter is a true inspirational story about a coach who was able to turn a whole basketball program around and help a group of young men succeed throughout high school and even on to college. It all started out with a man named Ken Carter, a man who was well known in the town of Richmond, California. He was a two sport all American and he holds records for the most assists, rebounds, and points at Richmond High School and he has lived there all of his life, he even owns a small sports store in town. But this ordinary man would have an extraordinary effect on some young teenage boys’ lives.
Growing up I was extremely blessed having an incredible coach at every level of sport I participated in. From those experiences I know how much a coach can make a difference in your life. For that reason my dream job is coaching college basketball at any division. It does not matter to me what level, because kids at the D-3 level need just as much guidance and help as student athletes at the D-1 level. During my coaching career I hope to blend two leadership styles in particular together in order to make my athletes better men, but also to keep the game they love fun to play. I feel by taking the Charismatic Leadership style’s enthusiasm and loyalty and mixing it with a Transformational Leaders innovation and emphasis on change, I can be an extremely effective and power leader for my student athletes.
He became the first ever basketball coach, he is known as the father of basketball, even though his record as a coach at the University of Kansas was a mediocre fifty five wins and sixty losses. There are many sports to coach, so choosing the right sport to coach is the first test for any coach. Naturally, one would want to coach a sport that you know the most about. For example, if an athlete decided he wanted to get into coaching he would most likely choose to coach the sport he had once played.

As individuals, we are each equipped with unique gifts and talents to share with our family, our community, and our world.
