Since I started at the University of Central Florida my grades have been progressively getting better as each week goes by. This is happening because the more that I am starting to understand what my particular two teachers are looking for the better I do on their assignments. I am taking two courses this summer. The first is Strategies for Student Success. This class teaches us strategies that will help us be successful students at UCF. This course teaches us about how to manage our time in college and outside of college as well. It also teaches us different techniques on how we can study for multiple classes and how to deal with our stress levels as we go through college as well. My other course that I am taking is English Composition 1. …show more content…
The first step that I will take is making sure that I understand the rubric that my teachers give me for writing assignments. This is because on some of my assignments I get points taken off because I either don’t clearly read the directions or I miss certain required parts of what was on the rubric. For example, on my first career journal I had points taken off because I looked at the syllabus that my teacher handed out to us but I didn’t check the rubric that was online that he wanted us to follow. If I would have looked at his syllabus online and used it as my outline I would have gotten a higher grade on my first career journal. My second step that I plan is to study more. I plan to do this because if I study just a little more to retain some of the information I am suppose to know then I will most likely get better grades on major assignments. Major assignments for Strategies for Student Success would include College Journals explain my college experience and how it is going so far and also my midterm and final exam which test my knowledge on all the material in our book. A major assignment that requires me to study would be the quizzes and material games. An example of me studying more is if instead of spending two hours studying and that’s it. I could study on each of my two breaks in between classes for thirty minutes and take a ten minute break and began to study again and etc. This will help me do two things. Store the information that I’ve learned and retain it as well because I’m not trying to remember everything in just one session. After the first and second steps I want to be more active in class to improve my performance in my class. This is because the more you ask questions and the more interactive in class that you are the better you tend to do on assignments as well. An example of me using this step in action would be me
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
English has never been my best subject. Reading books can be exciting, but the writing aspect of English can be dreadful. Somehow, however, I passed all my advanced English classes with at least a B, and my teachers always considered me to be “above average.” My impartiality toward English shifted to an indifference near the end of my high school career; my indifference then shifted to appreciation. This appreciation is attributed to American Studies and Honors Writing, the most difficult English classes at Belleville East Township High School. American Studies and Honors Writing have strengthened my writing skills beyond what I believed possible. I still do not believe that I am the best writer, and English may never be my best or favorite
I signed up for English 131 because I enjoy writing and figured it would be a fun and informative course in which I could learn writing strategies to help me in my college career and beyond. I’ve always thought of myself as a pretty good writer, as I took AP English classes in high school and it has always been a subject I’ve naturally gravitated towards. This course exceeded my expectations as to what I could learn in ten weeks. I feel that my writings skills have developed in all aspects, and I can take the skills I have learned and applied them to other courses and my future career. It’s an extremely good feeling after finishing an assignment, reading it over, and feeling very proud of how I was able to develop my thoughts and resources into something that has the potential to make a lasting impact on its readers.
A goal I have for academics is to not fail any quizzes or tests. One way I can do this is to study before every quiz and test. I can do this by making a good study guide and good notes for myself. I will also ask many questions so I can so I can know all the information. If I am confused on a question, I should ask questions so I can understand what will be asked on the test. One of the most important things I need to do to help my test grade is pay attention in class. If I take plenty of notes and listen to the lesson, I will have resources to study off of so I will do well. This year, I should do well on all of my tests and quizzes as long as I study, pay attention in class, and ask plenty of questions.
I really don't need to retake classes because I all the classes that I failed during summer school. If i fail any classes I would have to retake summer school again. That's really not the best decision so hopefully I can keep my grades up. The only thing I need to graduate is past my future classes. In order to do that I must pay attention and complete assignments. I really need to not slack off because if i pass all my classes I may be able to use summer school to get a head. Getting ahead can get me a home period therefore I have more time to do homework and maybe even get a job.
I didn’t want people to look at me and think that I have a disadvantage; I wanted to become the best at what I was worst. I started out by taking all honors classes sophomore year. I did well in all my classes except for English. I was hesitant to take honors again junior year, but I did it anyway. To my surprise I did extremely well, considering junior year was supposed to be the hardest year. I made A’s in all my classes except for a B in, of course, English. After seeing how well I did last year, I wanted more, I wanted to be better, I want the A’s, especially in English. Senior year I decided to take two AP classes, which include English and the rest honors. So far it has been a little bit of a challenging class, but I know that I will
Per the assessment results, there are three discrete principles that need to be addressed based on my personal, distinct habits. As I make a transition from high school to college, the weaknesses that need to be improved are interpreted as my note-taking, textbook and time management abilities. Primarily, note-taking is the worst mannerism found in my results. As a student, I always attempt to write down every single word in a presentation, or lecture. My note-taking habits need to be terminated because I am not enhancing my skills or learning any of the information, I am just regurgitating it. In high school, note-taking is not a big deal; however, in college note-taking is the consequent basis of learning. To amplify my skills in the area of note-taking, I need to be an active listener, so I can retain the information better and review it later. I should summarize the notes and analyze them on a daily basis.
I think I just might have to study even though it 's no fun and I can 't concentrate . I have friends like Matt and Deb who if i 'm writing an essay and get distracted by my phone will nicely ask me “So Rique how is that essay going?” just because they want me get it done so we can leave. I might wanna keep them around for next semester. This course taught me that I should surround myself with people who share the same interests as me like Leela and Zay who are also Art Education majors. I will use that when I am no longer in college and trying to pursue my dreams and needing a good network. I need to work on my writing skills but i am getting there... in
One of the three most appropriate On Course success strategies that will be best of use to achieve success for me in years to come is discover self-motivation. Defined by Downing as, “finding purpose in their lives by discovering personally meaningful goals and dreams” (296). Being able to use this strategy will be the key to my future success. Having motivation to do all the work given to me from my classes will keep me at a good grade. Passing my classes is what I need to do to reach my goal. I cannot do this without the fuel given to me by my motivation to finish to hard work and reach my destiny. Without my motivation there will be no desire to finish and accomplish what is really important and meaningful in life, and that is not what I want. A good example I keep in my mind to never repeat is senior year and the lack of motivation I had to finish up my last year. I ended with two C’s and that is very disappointing for me. Keeping this in mind will allow me to not lose motivation and keep thinking of the positive outcome because motivation is everything! Good concept to remembering motivation quoted by Downing, “…one formula explains much a...
It takes discipline to stay on track with online classes. I feel like I matured and grown into a better person by keeping up with my schoolwork. In week two, we learned how to make the most of our time by using a weekly timetable, daily to-do lists, and a master calendar. I use a weekly timetable each week to keep track of everything I need to complete so I do not get behind with my schoolwork. My second expectation for my first year in college was to stay motivated by obtaining good grades, and thinking about why I started college. I am proud that I earned good grades in my first year of college. Although the amount of school work I had to complete each week seemed overwhelming in the first couple of weeks of college, I quickly got better at managing my time during the week. My last expectation I had for my first year in college was to learn some of the interesting aspects of journalism that will be beneficial to me in years to come. I learned many beneficial things in the writing and speaking lesson during week seven. I learned the best techniques for getting started and writing a first draft such as free writing and brainstorming. Identifying the audience when you write is an important technique that writers must learn to do. One of the most important techniques every writer should know is to organize a paper into an Introduction, body, counterarguments, and conclusion. I learned how to complete a paper in APA format edition in my first-year experience class. Admittedly, I was nervous when I completed the Lassi completion and reflection video in week three. After I completed it, I gained more confidence in public speaking. I am proud of myself for exceeding my expectations for my first year in college. As I move forward in college, I expect myself to continue to work hard and obtain good grades. I
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. When we would get back our graded rubrics on the assignments we completed, the instructor would leave comments to
The first thing a person can do to improve their study habits is take better notes. When taking notes you do not have to write down every word the teacher says, if you do that you’re not going to know what's important and what's not important. If you do that you’re going to be studying things that’s not important and that could confuse you and make studying really boring. Write down only the things that you think are important. You can even read ahead in a book and highlight what you think is good information to know. If the teacher says anything more than once, or puts emphasis on something, highlight that it could be on your next test. Good thinking skills are especially important in note taking. Everyone has good thinking skills but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they use them. Good thinking skills can’t be studied they must be built up over...
At the end of the day or beginning of the school day, I communicated what I did with Ms. P to plan out better activities or lesson plans to meet each individual’s needs.
