Ultimately, the desired outcome of academic success is to construct the ability to be a life-long learner. It means to feel prepared for the future by retaining information and applying the acquired knowledge in a real-life setting outside of the class. Evidently, mindsets are a substantial part of academic success. If a positive mindset is not established, then there will not be positive outcomes. On a personal level, I believe academic success is defined as the ability to get an education, achieve personal goals through learning, gain excessive knowledge from those experiences and eventually apply it to the future. The faults expressed in the Study Skills inventory results were actually extremely obliging. Some strengths derived from my results were test preparation, concentration and memory skills. Some of the weaknesses that I patently lack are note-taking, textbook and time management adroitness’s. Per the assessment results, there are three discrete principles that need to be addressed based on my personal, distinct habits. As I make a transition from high school to college, the weaknesses that need to be improved are interpreted as my note-taking, textbook and time management abilities. Primarily, note-taking is the worst mannerism found in my results. As a student, I always attempt to write down every single word in a presentation, or lecture. My note-taking habits need to be terminated because I am not enhancing my skills or learning any of the information, I am just regurgitating it. In high school, note-taking is not a big deal; however, in college note-taking is the consequent basis of learning. To amplify my skills in the area of note-taking, I need to be an active listener, so I can retain the information better and review it later. I should summarize the notes and analyze them on a daily basis.
The article “How to Be a Success” by Malcom Gladwell speaks about how success is something that can be achieved if you put the time and work into it, and how success is not achieved overnight but rather through long hours of constant practice. His article is targeted to more than one group of individuals. College will require a great degree of self motivation and personal responsibility from the student. It would be great if during the primary stages of the college introduction the student took inventory of several personal traits that can impact their learning. A student should also be able to honestly assess his or her strengths and weaknesses. Awareness of shortcomings will arm the student with the ability to enhance them. Success means to live a life in alignment with what brings us real joy. In my case, “success-joy” comes in many guises. At times, in being persistent with my current dreams, others, investing time and energy in what makes my life shine, and that is, without a doubt, when my life is at service of humanity and when I cultivate happy and healthy close relationships. College isn’t like high school where you could just be happy all the time hoping that you’ll wing it to be successful or to barely pass your classes to graduate. What is success or how can I be successful? That’s the question I asked myself on the first day of college. Success in college is the main goal of college students, but finding it is another subject. Most students think that to be successful in college is to get good grades, which is true. But the question is how you will attain that. There are a lot of ways to accomplish your goals and come out on top.
Even though you may think you can succeed without a plan, every decision made will either help or hinder success because all actions have consequences and people who take personal responsibility succeed. Success to one person is not always the same to another, we all have our own definitions of success. To some, success may mean money and wealth. To others good health. Successful is a simple word, however, the meaning of this word changes quite often. Each person has a different definition of success and that definition can change depending on the situation. As a student, I believe that I have many strengths, but also some weaknesses that I need to work on. Personally, I think that I manage my time very well. I am very good at planning out when I will do assignments and how much time I will spend working on each of those assignment. Although sometimes I will plan too much for a certain amount of time and will not always be able to get it all done, so that is something I need to work on. Materialistically, my organization is not the best, but I am good at organizing my priorities and figuring out what I need to study for most, which leads into my study habits. My study habits are strong because I make sure that the time I am studying each day stays consistent, but there are times when I focus too much on a certain subject and then don’t pay attention to others that are also important, making me weak in those areas. Along with this, I think that my class work habits are pretty consistent, although there I times when I do get distracted. I don’t get distracted very often, so I usually take in information very well because I am good at paying attention.
After reviewing my written work from this this school year, I have determined my strengths and weaknesses in this course. By understanding the flaws in my writing, this allows me to better my skills and apply my thoughts. First, I do not write with enough attention to detail. I can improve my writing by being more specific with descriptions and adjectives. I tend to have a concise writing style, which has its pros and cons.
In considering the prompt for Discussion Board 3 prior to reading, I felt I maintained an adequate study routine. Unfortunately, after my analysis was complete, I realized that I am significantly lacking in my ability to study in an effective manner. As a homeschooled student, I think this is an area that my educational experience lacked in. Additionally, having spoken with my mother, she too agreed and has profusely apologized for this deficiency. Prior to gaining a more in depth understanding of proper study skills through the text, mine were quite weak. To be honest, I read my class textbooks while highlighting key factors to include in my notes. Once reading was complete, I would put together an outline of the concepts which I had highlighted.
An important question to address when attempting to identify effective study strategies and their relationship with academic performance is, “What are study skills?” The term “study skills” can be defined as proficiency in identifying, organizing, memorizing, and using information in order to succeed academically (Proctor, Prevatt, Adams, Hurst, & Petscher, 2006).
