I was first exposed to the world of robots and computers when I took a course on Lego Mindstorms. We worked on various projects including a sumo wrestling robot that participated in a tournament in which the objective was to battle other robots and push them out of the ring. It was a very fun experience. I would continue coding the robot after class, sometimes almost missing lunch! We even made it to the finals and scored second place. Programming and building the robot was not the hard part of the design process, it was thinking about every single little detail that of the competition and the possible strategies that our opponents could use. When something happened that we did not account for, the robot became helpless and clueless. I also took an Honors Python class I learned about the fundamentals of data structures and object oriented programming. With the newfound knowledge, I coded the old game called Space Invaders. The class gave me confidence in my ability to program, as it taught me how to make steady progress in a longer project. I continued on to take AP Computer Science and excelled. These courses and experiences helped me affirm my interest in a Computer Science career. Last summer, I was fortunate to find an internship at a Virtual Reality startup called VRINCO. There, we developed software for Virtual Reality headsets using C#, Unity, and Git. I really enjoyed the experience. I was first introduced to the real world CS and programming languages in Grade 9. I learned Java for 4 years and watching my code execute correctly was always delightful. And that is when I decided that I wanted to pursue CS. At UCI, I learned Python in my first year and currently I am learning C++. Some assignments have really blown me away as I was able to connect the dots between different concepts and produce results. To get exposed to CS, I job shadowed a Web Developer and a Director of Operation. To gain new skills, I did a research project in areas of crowdsourcing where I learned Django and applied my knowledge in creating a website with other teammates using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I worked on IoT and Augmented Reality as a summer intern. I am currently working on Augmented Reality as an intern, this quarter. I believe that learning and applying are different things and unless you are able to develop or progress by applying your knowledge you won’t know if you have indeed trodden the path of mastering it. I am grateful to have several opportunities to help me grow and advance in CS.
With college right around the corner and taking a college course gave a real sense of how college classes are going to work giving me an edge over all of the other students going to college that didn’t take a dual enrollment course. Last summer, I learned that a lack of experience can be extraordinarily stressful, but can also foster creativity and spur personal and intellectual growth. In my junior year, an opportunity opened up at my school for students to apply for a summer internship at a tech startup of their choice. I was of ten students accepted into the program, and despite the wide assortment of companies available in nearby Silicon Valley, I chose to use the $2000 stipend provided to travel to Munich and intern at a German engineering company called KONUX. Just after summer began, I left home for an unfamiliar country and an unfamiliar language, bringing with me only a basic understanding of what the company did, what my role would be at the company, and how my stay would be structured. Upon arriving, I was asked to assist in the establishment of a marketing presence in the United States.
My ultimate goal in my career is to make a commendable contribution to the computing world either by starting an innovative venture or doing research which would change the dimensions of future computing and the way we perceive the computers. Now I have determined that a dedicated higher study on Computer Science will enable me to aggregate all my previous knowledge & experience on the field and encourage in achieving my career goal. Through a robot body, one can utilize AI algorithms to portray individual thinking. The first general purpose robot is called Shakey. Developed at the Stanford Research Institute from 1966 to 1972, Shakey was the first robot to think in advance. For example, Shakey was able to understand a command such as turn off a light switch in a particular room. The robot would go through a corridor, find the room and then locate and turn off a light switch. Shakey could complete an action without the need of step-by-step instructions. The LISP software was used to program Shakey. The development of Shakey advanced AI concepts from the invention of the A search algorithm to the understanding of the full capabilities of robots. Shakey raised the public’s awareness of computer science and artificial intelligence in the 1970s. Shakey moved public thoughts to questioning what machines could and will do in the future. My internship experience this semester was interesting. I interned at ESH/MESH with Bridgeway. My Supervisor was Emilie Banz. I didn’t do much but I did learn a lot from this experience. I met a lot of great people and watch PsyR in action. I met a couple of individuals who were really cool. My experience this semester has prepared me for the next.
