In 2012, eighty-four percent of Santa Clara University graduates who responded to a survey from the Santa Clara University School of Engineering obtained one or more internships during their undergraduate studies. Of those who responded, eighty-two percent were employed full-time after graduation earning a median salary of $62,500 (Santa Clara University). This research exhibits that internships can be an important strategy in the efforts toward job search for both students, as well as for employers looking to hire valuable employees. As defined by InternNE.com, an internship is any carefully monitored service or work experience that may be evaluated for educational credit in which an intern or student establishes learning goals and reflects on his or her learning experience in relation to achievement of the stated goals. Internships should first be examined that, when implemented at fullest potential, these opportunities can provide companies and students with a competitive edge in today’s business world. Subsequently, it can be shown that internships assist organizations and companies with temporary or seasonal project and task completion. Lastly, internships will be clarified as to how they allow students to gain valuable experience before entering the workforce. From reviewing an ample amount of research, internships are beneficial and advantageous to the success of a young student, as well as companies. To begin, the focus should be on the benefits of students who have the ability to deliver a unique outlook and perhaps improved or enhanced business ideas. Especially with today’s modern technology, interns are able to bring ideas that may help improve the effectiveness and efficiency of company practices through the use of t... ... middle of paper ... ...Clara University, n.d. “Take This Internship and Shove It” by Anya Kamenetz is about the declining state of jobs for new college graduates or current college students. Anya Kamenetz is attempting to prove that internships, particularly unpaid internships, are part of the problem of new graduates finding employment in their field of study. Kamenetz is also trying to prove internships are harmful to the job market in general. Kamenetz describes internships as “fake jobs” and states internships cause low wages and decline in young workers being part of a union. When an employer can hire someone for free he or she is more likely to do so instead of spending company money on a paid employee. Employers get away with these practices because with an already troubling job market, new graduates worry about finding jobs in their field. Colleges are either requiring students to participate in an internship to graduate or are pushing that internships are the gateway to careers. Kamenetz points out that two-thirds of college students are receiving loans to help pay for their education and it is harmful to the individual to work for free when that time is essential to make money to pay for living and school expenses.

As a political science major Washington DC or something related to it usually comes out in classes. It has been a personal dream to go visit, but it has become a recent aspiration to go and work there. In any field, it can be difficult to get a job to jumpstart one’s career. The “real world” is known as after college for most people. For the post college reality, I have been trying to make it as painless as possible, but at the same time have it reach its full potential success wise. The reasons that I am interested in the DC internship, are that it would be a great experience, it would help me develop new skills, and it would be the perfect start for my career.

Through the Meet the Firms process here at Texas Tech, I have achieved one of my short-term goals by accepting an internship offer with Ernst & Young, which will start in January 2019. During this internship I will be able to show my knowledge and efficiency in programs such as Microsoft Excel, my ability to learn new programs and procedures, and my ability to communicate with others in effective ways. This internship will be an incredible experience and will serve as a key part in my long-term goal of working at Ernst & Young

Even though I had already rescheduled this meeting twice in the last three weeks, I chose to reschedule it again due to the tasks which I had completed yesterday directly affecting the operations of the company. This task is important for me to accomplish because I can appreciate the benefits that an internship program can offer to the company since I was hired for my current job as a result of the skills which I acquired during my internship. Having made a commitment to increase my earnings this quarter, hiring interns at a lower wage than an entry-level employee will contribute to my earnings as well as to an increase in production. Other benefits to hiring interns are that they can bring fresh, new ideas to the company and this is an opportunity for the employer to evaluate the potential of the interns as paid employees in the future (Forbes, May 2011).
The quarter has finally come to an end, and with that, I close out my internship and this class that went along with it. It was a great experience and I leave equipped with a new set of skills that are preparing me for the world ahead. As I write this reflection paper, I think back to the very first week when I set up two goals for myself to focus on and hope to achieve throughout the following weeks. My first goal was to develop a better understanding of myself within the work place, and my second was to develop a strong network to jumpstart my career. Both of my goals were achieved, however, I don’t feel that either of my goals will ever be complete. I believe that you can always formulate a better understanding of yourself, and you can always network to develop a stronger tree of connections. I know for a fact, however, that I reached satisfaction with both of my goals at this internship at MKI and know whole-heartedly that I did everything in my power to exhaust my resources in
Throughout my internship, I was well trained and did receive a fruitful experience. The real working environment prepared me for future employment after my graduation. However, I did encounter some problems, which I gradually managed to deal with. Whatever happens, productivity increases by keeping a positive attitude.
ability to establish a professional work ethos as well as developing skills needed to maintain a work life balance. Through all the experiences gained from this internship, it has provided skills such as multitasking in a fast paced office setting, keen organizational skills, and improvement on communicating in a professional workplace as well as the ability to handle situations as they arise.
