Before taking the StrengthsFinder® assessment I didn’t know what type of leader I was, but I felt I had leadership traits that I could not describe. The mystery of what makes one an effective leader has fascinated people for thousands of years. There is a great difference between leadership and management. Leadership in my opinion differs from management and requires transformational approaches. Peter F. Drucker says, "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things (Goodreads.com,2014). Management capabilities can be developed mostly through personal experiences while leadership skills are inherent and there are therefore no clear cut ways to develop it. The viability of a leader depends more on knowing yourself, pragmatic leadership and pleasing the masses rather than responding to circumstances.
There are many components that make up one’s leadership style. These leadership components are unique to each individual and how each individual presents his or her self. The perception of whether or not an individual is a good leader is sometimes swayed because of their values or their ethical behavior. In general a leader is a person that has the skills to manage individuals and get these individuals to follow him or her. The text Developing Management Skills states “In order to be an effective manager, in other words, individuals must be competent in: (1) clan skills, or a focus on collaboration; (2) adhocracy skills, or the focus on creation; (3) market skills, or a focus on competition; and (4) hierarchy skills, or a focus on control” (Whetten & Cameron, 2014, p. 16).
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
In accordance to the afore-mentioned, it is an absolute necessity that a successful leader, obtain more than one leadership style, they must be empathetic, be able to motivate and inspire their followers, as well as the ability to accept changes within the economy and the world by means of working as a team while effectively collaborating with other public service leaders, communities, and professionals in the final attempt of reaching their common goals.
