Professional Philosophy Statement
Learning refers to the process of gaining knowledge. Learning can occur through hands-on activities, experiences, and the studying of content. The learning process can be facilitated by giving students the resources needed to become knowledgeable citizens who actively contribute to their communities. By creating a classroom environment that promotes free thought, creativity, and individuality, students will be in an environment where they will learn and develop. By working in small groups, the students will learn skills that relate to social development, teamwork, and the diversity of others within the same community. My experiences have influenced my beliefs about learning in that I am not the type of student that can learn effectively though note-taking. I learn best through hands-on activities and group discussion, rather than lectures and essays. The learning environment is imperative for facilitating a place where students will want to learn and expand their knowledge.

My role as a teacher is to facilitate the learning process.
Every student learns differently, but giving students the opportunities to discover how they learn best is the most effective way to see how to operate a classroom. This can be done by trying out different instructional methods to find what meets the needs of my students. For example, there may be a lesson that students conceptualize through hands-on activities, whereas, another time, they may easily grasp a new concept through a lecture. One of the most important aspects of being a teacher, in my opinion, is to have an extensive knowledge of the content before starting a lesson in class. One way this can be accomplished is to survey the class before starting a new lesson. Seeing what the students already know and want to know can help make the lesson more engaging, interesting, and beneficial to the students. This is a more effective way of planning a lesson and seeing what the students want to
know. Being a student over the last sixteen years, I have a pretty good understanding of what I need in a teacher and my experiences have impacted how I plan to teach. I plan to be an engaging teacher who relies on feedback from my students to help them learn. Some of my most impactful teachers have asked students for feedback and modified the class to fit their needs. This makes an effective teacher. An ineffective teacher does not take feedback or input from his/her students and refuses to modify lessons. I want my students to gain self-knowledge, accountability, and problem-solving skills through my teaching. This will allow them to be responsible for themselves and ensuring they putting the effort into their learning process. I plan to set high-expectations and goals for my students. Setting goals will hold my students accountable for their work and their learning process. To set goals, I will use the SMART goal method. This method ensures that all goals are specific, measureable, attainable, relevant, and timely. In reference to critical thinking and problem solving goals, I will challenge my students to think outside of the box and beyond the expected. This will instill a sense of self-confidence in my students by making them feel confident in their solutions and being able to have solid support behind their theories. I will measure goals by having personal meetings with my students to be able to tangibly track their progress. Setting goals will be imperative in making sure that my students are getting the most of my class as possible.
Growing up, I have always known that I wanted to work in the education field. I believe helping students learn and grow is my purpose in life. I believe the purpose of education is to see students develop and grow. I believe the role of the student is to come to school and learn new information that they can apply to their lives. I believe the role of the paraprofessional is to be the assistant for the teacher and provide assistance to the students. I believe the community plays a major role in education, especially the parents and guardians. They are a part of their child 's education and provide support for them when they need it most. Education is not going away anytime soon, so we need to look at what education
As I touch on some of my teacher characteristics I will be touching on some of the philosophies and theories that resonate with me including the authority base continuum, the theories of classroom management continuum, models of discipline, and the CALM model. Of the three teacher authority bases I feel that I would combine two of them to create my style of teaching: referent, and expert. Personally I feel that I would like my students to behave in line with my expectations because they like me and feel that I care about their learning, and I am looking out for their best interests (Levin et al., 2016). I would also like my students to listen to me because they see me as a knowledgeable person who can help them on their learning journey. In order for my students to feel this way I would communicate to them that I care about them as individuals and learners, and I would teach them things that are interesting to them so that they value what they are learning (Kohn, 1996; Levin et al., 2016). I feel very strongly about providing the students with material that interests them because students will not be engaged if they do not want to learn about something, which would not benefit anyone. This is where an element of effective planning comes into play.
I listen to my students. I allow time for their individual impute in what they are learning, and adjust accordingly. I really believe that is why students can be so into the idea of being taught, because they are all encouraged to lead the discussion and projects before them as it relates to the curriculum. I try to learn from my students by listening to their interpretation. I am learning what interest them, and feed off of it in the work that needs to be performed. Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
I’ve had teachers who taught in a way that was a good way for them to teacher, but wasn’t a good way for students to learn. I know I want to be a high school teacher, and by the time they will reach my class, my students should know how they should be presented the information, so that they can learn in such a way that is best for them. A teacher should be able to teach in a way that’s suitable for the majority of students, and be able to give extra help to those who don’t learn as the other students do. I want to be the teacher who is willing to put in extra time with the students for their classroom
At the beginning of the school year I think it is important that the teachers collaborate and create standards that students should be expected to understand. These standards will be focused on throughout the school year. During the school year, assess and see where students are. A good way to ensure students are learning is during PLC meetings. This is a time to talk about what we expect our students to learn, how we know they are learning, how we will respond when the students are not responding, and how we respond when student already know the material. As a teacher, it is important to create expectation and assess formally and informally to make sure students are understanding what you are teaching. As an individual, I believe it is important to reflect and make sure I am teaching the material in a way that is beneficial
Firstly, it is very important to remember that a classroom consists of many different kinds of learners and all those learners have different needs and different preferred ways
I know many teachers who only do lectures or do the same thing for every unit. All students learn differently so it is important to keep that in mind when creating a lesson. It's important to know how all of your students learn so you can implement that into the lesson. It's important to teach students using as many of these strategies as possible. This is why I love choice boards so much.
Over the course of observations, I learned that there is no one way to do anything in teaching. After a few weeks of observing, I was relieved because I thought that I could stop worrying so much about doing the “right” thing with the students. I saw a successful teacher doing, or neglecting to do things that went against what I had been taught. I incorrectly assumed that the choices the teacher made about how to organize the day, approach a lesson, or manage the classroom were mostly a matter of personal preference and that several approaches would produce equally desirable results.
It is a constant truth that technology is growing rapidly and it is opening up many opportunities for students as well as teachers. Through the use of the internet information that would take scholars months to acquire out and interpret can be found in less than a minute though a Google search and not only is the information their, but in many cases the information that you wanted is shown in bolded so it can even be found quicker.
When you step back and look at the big picture of life, you will notice that the concept of learning plays an essential role in it. What you learn and how you learn is your key to life success and it can open a multitude of doors for you along the way. Learning, however, is routine and much like other activities that are routine such as brushing your teeth or eating meals, you begin to think less and less about what you are doing or how you have been doing it. I never actually put too much thought into how I learned or the origins of my learning experience, but after reflecting on the ideas I have been able to clearly identify the manners in which I have learned and how I can transform my learning experience
The role and responsibilities of a teacher is very complex. Teachers are responsible for making sure their learners acquire the knowledge they need, but also achieve their qualification by the end of the course in a safe learning environment, so they have the skills and experience they need to start their careers. To achieve that goal a teacher must be creative, professional, flexible and knowledgeable enough to deal with daily challenges and find different ways to help their learners needs. Establishing a safe and stimulating environment for learners, creating mutual respect and set goals that stretch and challenge learners of all backgrounds and abilities.
Teaching is a daunting task that I do not intend to take lightly. Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine for several years. I always knew that teaching would be the career for me, especially when I began working in the school system as a substitute secretary. I loved working in the school environment; coming in contact with children everyday made me realize how much I would enjoy teaching a classroom full of students.
Children are our future and it is up to us as educators to point them in the right direction. I always enjoyed school and found it fun and exciting. As I got older, I only remember the teacher's that made a difference in my life. I want to the teacher that makes a difference in a child's life. Whether it be as simple as a teacher, or advanced as a father-figure, I will be their for the children.
We need to continuously assess and evaluate our students so we can set appropriate goals for each student and individual instructions. Each child learns different, so as a teacher we need to have different styles of teaching for positive reinforcement.
