How would you address a wide range of skills and abilities in your classroom?
First, I would look at any IEP’s that I have in my class. After looking at the different IEP’s and what accommodations are needed I would look at differentiating the lesson. There are multiple learning strategies and as a teacher I will use a variety of different instructional strategies. Differentiating my instruction will include whole group instruction, small group instruction, independent work, and in pairs. Using a variety of instruction techniques will allow me to meet the needs of the wide variety of skills and abilities.

The most important responsibility is making sure the students are learning and engaged. The classroom needs to be place where students are engaged and continuing to learn. As a teacher, I will deal with a variety of different issues, but at the end of the day it matters if the students are learning. More than anything, it is important students feel comfortable and safe when they are learning. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to create a classroom atmosphere where students are learning in an environment that is safe.
What will you do to ensure that your students learn?
At the beginning of the school year I think it is important that the teachers collaborate and create standards that students should be expected to understand. These standards will be focused on throughout the school year. During the school year, assess and see where students are. A good way to ensure students are learning is during PLC meetings. This is a time to talk about what we expect our students to learn, how we know they are learning, how we will respond when the students are not responding, and how we respond when student already know the material. As a teacher, it is important to create expectation and assess formally and informally to make sure students are understanding what you are teaching. I will use the gradual release model, which is “I do, we do, then you do.” I like introducing a subject as whole group then moving into guided instruction. After guided instruction moving into collaboration and independent practice. This model could be seen in a math lesson where we talk about it as a group and then move to working on the math problem independently. After observing how to solve the problem we would move into solving the problem as a group. Then, eventually students would work cooperatively, then by themselves to solve similar math problems. Students need a variety of different instructions, and I need to beware of the variety of different learners in my classroom. Cooperative learning is another learning strategy you will see in my classroom. Cooperative learning allows students to discuss, explain, and analyze the different lesson/standards we are trying to teach. Most educators do not make new lesson plans they change ones by adding instructional strategies. The more ways an educator teaches the better off the students are when it comes to learning. Not all students learn by listening to a lecture. There are visual learners, kinesthetic learners (hand-on), and auditory learners. If an educator can reach out using all of these styles most if not every student will learn what is being taught. Intelligence has been separated into different parts; “linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal behaviors” (Hardman, 2011). Knowing this as an educator a lesson plan should incorporate auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners, thus covering all areas.
IEP Development. In developing the IEP, the team should determine the child’s present level of academic achievement and functional performance and project whether any additions or modifications to the instruction or services are necessary to enable the child to meet measurable annual goals and to participate, as appropriate, in the general education curriculum. IDEA requires that the team considers the student’s strengths; parents’ concerns; evaluation results; and academic, functional, and developmental needs of the student. The IEP team must also consider individual circumstances. One special consideration is whether the student’s behavior impedes that student’s learning or the learning of other students. If so, the IEP team must consider the use of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS), and other strategies, to address the behavior.
It is my strong belief that each child is entitled to a safe, secure, stimulating and caring learning environment. I always believed that each child is a unique individual with much curiosity and many academic, social and emotional needs. Children need our support in order to mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. As a teacher, one should aim to help students in fulfilling their dreams to become successful and educated individuals. We must provide them with a safe learning environment for their learning to succeed.

I listen to my students. I allow time for their individual impute in what they are learning, and adjust accordingly. I really believe that is why students can be so into the idea of being taught, because they are all encouraged to lead the discussion and projects before them as it relates to the curriculum. I try to learn from my students by listening to their interpretation. I am learning what interest them, and feed off of it in the work that needs to be performed. In order to be an effective teacher there needs to be an understanding that we all learn differently, this means that no single teaching strategy is effective for all students/learners all the time. This makes teaching a complex process because you need to understand and meet the requirements of all of your learners. Students learn best when they aren’t asked to simply memorise information but when they form their own understandings of what is being taught. When a student has successfully learnt a new idea they are able to then intergrate this information with their previously learnt information and make sense of it. To be an effective teacher you need to work jointly with students to asses where they are at, be able to give feedback on how the student is going and ensure that they are understanding the lesson (Killen, 2013) According to Lovat and Smith (2003) students learning must result in a change in a student’s understanding of the information being taught. In order to show understanding they must be able to share this information with others and want to learn more (Killen, 2013). In order to have a deeper understanding of what is being taught they need to be aware of the relationship that exists between what they knew previously and the new information that is being learned (Killen, 2013).. Students need to be given goals that they can achieve in order to feel a sense of mastery over their own learning, this gives students motivation that they are able to complete tasks and to keep going.
Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
The special education teacher should take on the role of helping plan the lesson for the classroom. She will take into consideration her special education students’ IEPs. She will plan accordingly to help accommodate and modify information to held her students be successful. She may even help adapt the lesson to better meet the needs of her students. Sometimes the special education teacher may seek assistance with these tasks by her para educator.
Throughout the course of the lesson, it may take multiple sessions before the student is ready to independently practice the skills learned. Anticipated lesson duration is included with each lesson plan provided in this instructional unit. Madeline Hunter’s Seven Steps of Instruction includes stating the objectives, anticipatory set, teacher input, modeling, checking for understanding, guided practice, and independent practice (Hunter, 2004). For the purpose of this instructional unit, input and modeling have been condensed into a streamlined event; as well has, checking for understanding and guided practice. This form of lesson planning is preferred within the Elkin City Schools district and lends itself to the creation of engaging lessons.
I always feel like it depends on the student’s exceptionality as to how I vary my lesson and how I help the student be successful in the lesson. I also never know what the answer is they want me to give. My teacher suggested that I mention that I would make sure to follow the IEP and then work collaboratively with parents and intervention specialists.

As a teacher, social responsibility is very important. It is our job, as teacher 's, to provide a nurturing, welcoming and safe learning environment for all students. It is very important that as teachers, we take very seriously the influence that we have with our students. A teacher has the power to influence their students’ conversations, their thinking and even where they set their standards for themselves. Our students need to know that their dreams do not stop at the classroom door. It is our job to instill the confidence in them to reach for the stars and accomplish their goals. As teachers, we need to build our students skills, so they will be successful next grade level. This is something that I do not, and no one for that matter, should take lightly. I believe Classroom Management is the main component in the educational setting. I believe if students are in a safe environment, then learning can take place. This doesn’t mean punishing behavior problems but rather a combination of setting the tone in a class, preventing behavior problems with interesting and engaging curriculums and effectively including all students in the classroom so that their needs are met. Having the right environment for all students to learn is my major goal of implementing good classroom management--without it the students would not be able to learn.
The role and responsibilities of a teacher is very complex. Teachers are responsible for making sure their learners acquire the knowledge they need, but also achieve their qualification by the end of the course in a safe learning environment, so they have the skills and experience they need to start their careers. To achieve that goal a teacher must be creative, professional, flexible and knowledgeable enough to deal with daily challenges and find different ways to help their learners needs. Establishing a safe and stimulating environment for learners, creating mutual respect and set goals that stretch and challenge learners of all backgrounds and abilities.
