In my mock interview with the principal he asked many questions that I thought, “Wow yes I do need to think about my answers more.” When I went in the first thing he asked was what my personal philosophy and I thought, “well it’s typed on my computer.” I was able to remember most of the general philosophy that I had. The hardest question I had was, what was the worst lesson you have even taught? I talked about a lesson I taught while my cooperating teacher was out for the day and I had a substitute. The students had also just given blood so they were unfocused and dizzy. Then he asked how I would change the lesson if there were a blood drive later in the school year. I always feel like it depends on the student’s exceptionality as to how I vary my lesson and how I help the student be successful in the lesson. I also never know what the answer is they want me to give. My teacher suggested that I mention that I would make sure to follow the IEP and then work collaboratively with parents and intervention specialists. I am also not sure if my classroom management method was a good answer either. I said that I like to set up a routine within the first few weeks of school, so that the students know what to expect. I like to write the goals on the board for the students to know what we need to accomplish for the class period. I said my main way of managing a classroom was to build a routine and follow it. When talking to my teacher she mentioned to say that I will set up consequences and then always following through with those consequences. I thought her answer was a good. I seemed to like my cooperating teacher’s answers better than the ones that I gave, which is why we do this. I have no idea how I did in general. I felt good about many of the answers I gave, but I have no idea whether they were what they were looking for. I guess the answers they look for vary for each district that you will interview
My assignment is a combination of two interviews. I interviewed an Assistant Principal, Ms. Katis Romig, as well as, our Curriculum Director, Mrs. Maria Petkanas. They are both responsible for the curriculum development and instruction for the school where I work, P.S. 811Q. I also learned a fair amount from Ms. Romig and Mrs. Petkanas including that District 75 Citiwide Special Education’s Deputy Superintendent, Ms. Barbara Joseph, had given the school feedback and suggested writing curriculum and textbooks. This was the only feedback she gave our principal during her observation last week.
The teacher I choose to interview was Michelle Niinisto. Mrs. Niinisto has been teaching for 14 years. This is her first year teaching general education. She is currently an 8th grade language arts and social studies teacher at Hyre Community Learning Center. Before this year she taught special education, with a focus on deaf and hard of hearing. She spent about 4 years teaching second and third grade deaf special education. She had explained to me since the questions I was going to ask her were mostly about phonics, that she would have to go back to her elementary teacher days. The first thing I wanted to know was what she thinks her brothers strengths and weaknesses. For these specific questions, I only asked about one brother instead of both of them to limit the time of the interview. I asked about Jack’s strengths and weaknesses in school. Meghan said that his strength is his elective classes like P.E, art, reading, and writing. His weaknesses are math, history, and science. The next question I asked was what does she expect for Michael in the future. She told me that it will be interesting for how far he will come because he is very dependent on his mother right now. She believe that it will be a huge issue for him. She wants to see his communication skills to get better but overall he is a very smart, funny person with a great future she says. The last question I asked Meghan was about what helps Michael and Jack in school. For being a future special educator I thought I could reflect a lot on this question by getting helpful tips. She told me that Michael does very well with his classroom aide and in smaller classes. He also loves when he get rewarded for his work. He enjoys sensory breaks with either his ipad or just relaxing on the carpet. Finally, Michael doesn’t like transitions to classes and this is difficult for him. My personal philosophy of classroom management focuses on creating an environment where children feel safe and where they feel like they belong. I will create this environment for my fourth grade class through making my expectations of the students clear while developing an engaging lesson plan and personable interactions with my students. I developed my philosophy from studying different theorists and based my philosophy on the theories of Glasser and Kounin. Glasser believed that the teacher’s roll in the classroom is that of a leader rather than a boss. He believed that students should be given power in the classroom and that the teacher should share it with the students. I will use his ‘7 caring habits’ specifically supporting and respecting to help my classroom feel safe and welcoming to my students. Meeting the individual needs of my students will be the focus of my classroom management routine. I will meet individual needs by promoting self management and self efficacy in my students by creating an environment that that has predictable and consistent daily routines while focusing on my student’s successes (Shindler, 2010). Having a predictable routine will encourage a success oriented environment and will reduce anxiety and help towards creating positive self efficacy in each of my students (Shindler, 2010). In Glasser’s Choice Theory he talks about focusing on the present and not bringing up the past (Glasser, 2010). For the lead teacher interview assignment, I had the opportunity to sit down with and interview my son’s EC teacher from last year, Mrs. Hamm. Since my son started at the school last year, Mrs. Hamm has helped him in so many different ways. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching for over 20 years from her home state of Pennsylvania and more currently at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC. Mrs. Hamm has been teaching at Mount Energy Elementary School in Creedmoor, NC for the last 12 years and recently awarded “Teacher of the Year”. Mrs. Hamm, up until this school year, was the main EC teacher for all grades Kindergarten through fifth grade at Mount Energy Elementary School. As of the present school year, the school district made the determination that she was over the acceptable number of students. As a result, they decided to hire an additional EC teacher and assistant to teach grades 3-5th and Mrs. Hamm would teach grades K-2. Mrs. Hamm was the teacher of 18 students until this decision was made, now with grades K-2, she has 9 students in her class.
Teacher Interview summary: I had the pleasure of interviewing the 3rd grade social studies teacher Mr. Columbie. As I observed Mr. Columbie on a weekly basis, I would constantly ask him questions on how he taught social studies in his classroom and what strategies he uses. Mr. Columbie informed me that he teaches social studies in his classroom once a week, but now that the students are preparing for the FSA test he has not been teaching social studies. He explained that the schools main focus is that every teacher is teaching and building students math and reading skills. He also explained to me that he can get in trouble with the principle if he were to teach a full social studies lesson in his classroom. He told me that for social studies he is giving his students reading passages and the students are answering comprehension questions at the end of the reading.
The task of completing the mock interview was very insightful and yet nerve-wracking. This experience allowed me to learn a lot about how others and prospective employers may perceive me. In addition, I also learned a lot about myself. I took some time in advance to plan for the interview. I considered aspects such as when to arrive, what to wear and preparing a resume. This prior planning helped me to have a successful interview.

I could honestly say I was not extremely surprised to hear any of my responses. I know that at the beginning of this course, I was very intimidated to talk about this topic but the professor and my classmates have really made talking about this topic a little less stressful. Due to my anxiety about the topic, the initial recordings do show my hesitation in answering some questions. I think that would be the only thing that surprises me now looking back at my recording, my intimidation about the topic. If I were to complete the first part of the self-reflection project now, I think my answers would be different in that they would be more concise and my attitude would be much more assertive about the topic.
I chose to do my teacher interview in my home town at Richard D. Crosby Elementary School. This K-3rd grade building is very new, it was built in 2010. It has 4 pods, one for each grade level and has a large discovery center in each pod. The school is very colorful, with each pod a different color so the children find it easy to go from area to area. I did my interview with Mrs. Doe, a special education teacher. Her room has a lot of materials for learning and is set up to have several work stations for group activities. Mrs. Doe shares her students with other special education teachers and also has a special education classroom aide. My research question is how does a teacher’s perspective on learning reflect theories and concepts in educational psychology? Mrs. Doe is faced with many challenges in her classroom, overcrowding, multi-cultural differences, learning disabilities, several students with low socioeconomic status and English language learners. There are many challenges for Mrs. Doe to deal with, but she has been teaching for 21 years and has a lot of experience. She started out as a regular classroom teacher, but switched to special education and has done so well that when she asked if she could return to the regular classroom setting, the Superintendent begged her to stay in the special education department because of her success.
This I Believe Philosophy statement will include my thoughts and beliefs about classroom management with comparison to other theorists’ models. The major theorists that will be mentioned are Barbara Coloroso, Linda Albert, and Lee & Marlene Canter. I highly agree with the Canter’s and Coloroso’s models of classroom management because it best fits my personality as an individual teacher. I believe that an affective classroom management plan is first practiced and then modeled for improvements. My ultimate goal for my Classroom Management Plan is to model self-discipline by teaching it through my daily actions so that students may be able to self-manage themselves accordingly.
Suzanne Zabriskie, or Mrs. Z for those of us that were too young to pronounce Zabriskie, is not only my best friend’s mother, but was also my church choir instructor. While I attended public school she was often times my substitute and was a large help in getting me the extra assistance that I needed to catch up with my classmates. Yet my relationship with Mrs. Z wasn’t much more than that of a student and a teacher. When I first asked her for an interview I was a bit nervous of how our conversation would go, wondering if I would still be answered like a student. To my relief, not only did she answer my questions without holding back, but she gave me advice for developing as a teacher.
Coming into this class, I figured we would learn about how to handle different kinds of situations from a teacher’s standpoint. As it turns out, the class is much more than just that. I figured there would be group discussions consisting of some controversial issues, but I had no idea how the course would make me feel as a person and as a future educator. So far, this class has brought to light the incredibly difficult decisions I will have to make as a teacher. Not only will those decisions affect the child and parents of that child at hand, but myself as well.
I believe Classroom Management is the main component in the educational setting. I believe if students are in a safe environment, then learning can take place. This doesn’t mean punishing behavior problems but rather a combination of setting the tone in a class, preventing behavior problems with interesting and engaging curriculums and effectively including all students in the classroom so that their needs are met. Having the right environment for all students to learn is my major goal of implementing good classroom management--without it the students would not be able to learn.
This video mock interview was a great experience. The questions were based on interview questions that a company can ask you and prepared you for a real interview. This mock interview was fun to do and taught me many lessons I can do in a real interview setting. To start off, I had to prepare for this mock interview. Some things I considered when preparing was to firstly, look at the questions and briefly go over my answers for each question. After that, I had to wear my best attire and adjust my camera and lighting. Lastly, I had to remind myself with some tips when doing this interview.
