I am looking forward to this course and all that I can learn throughout our time together. I hope to acquire the skills to further my professional communication skills in a variety of ways. Recently I started working at Upstate University hospital, I am 20 years old and this is my first “real” job. Previously I worked at Wegmans as a cashier, where professional communication was not expected or required. At my new job the atmosphere is much more formal and I find that I am having to send various emails to nursing managers and supervisors regarding scheduling and such. In many cases I have never met these people and I am unsure of where to begin. I think that this course will help me to develop these key communication skills that I will be able
to put to use at my current job, and in the future. I have been relying on mentors to proofread my emails and assist me in constructing them in a professional and concise way before sending them, however I am excited to gain knowledge from this class so that I can grow professionally and handle communications on my own. This class will help me in my future career in a variety of ways. I am hoping that I will learn how to handle myself professionally through various communication methods, as well as how to write formal documentation and such. As an occupational therapy major, much of my future career will include documenting client visits and treatments, and communicating with other allied health professionals. I am looking forward to acquiring the skills needed to conduct clear, concise and professional communication through a variety of outlets. This will be paramount in my success as an occupational therapy professional.
Among the several themes highlighted by the video clip, communication is the chosen theme for the purpose of this essay. Communication involves the exchange of messages and is a process which all individuals participate in. Whether it is through spoken word, written word, non-verbal means or even silence, messages are constantly being exchanged between individuals or groups of people (Bach & Grant 2009). All behaviour has a message and communication is a process which individuals cannot avoid being involved with (Ellis et al 1995).
The first week of lecture was a little confusion for me but also exciting because it meant I was starting clinical. The drug test was hard for me because I had just gone to the restroom before class but I drank a lot of water during classed was successful my second time at the end of class. I made my self a little sick drinking that much water. Getting my scrubs was extremely exciting and made me feel like a real nurse. I think it would help me a lot if we where able to wear our scrubs to class when we have clinical right after because there is not a lot of time between class and clinical. I find lecture and the foundations book very interesting and useful. I am looking forward to using the ATI book along with this course as well.
Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. It also helps me to progress to a stable job that is solely concentrated on making a positive difference in someone’s life. For this reason, I would feel privileged to be accepted on to this course.

As a social worker it is important to have basic communication skills in order to connect with clients. There are six basic and four advanced skills that are used in direct practice to make communication more effective. The basic skills include reflection of feelings, paraphrasing, open ended questions, closed ended questions, clarification and attending behaviors. Advanced skills consist of summarization, information giving, interpretation and confrontation. Not only is it important to know what these skills are, it is also important to know what the appropriate and inappropriate uses are. It is also important to self-reflect on your use of these skills, and whether it is a strength or something to continue to work to improve on.
At the beginning of the semester my outlook on this course was not so good. I was not looking forward to giving speeches or learning things that seemed like common sense, but as time went on I could tell that I was actually taking things away from it. I have learned that I am not so good at coming up with things to say under pressure and I get extremely nervous when I have to talk in front of people that I don’t know well. Oh wait, I already knew those things. This class has motivated me to strengthen my social skills and has also taught me how to effectively work in a team environment through the team communication consultant project. I will show this by analyzing my teams strategic plan, the cohesiveness of the team, and the productivity of the team.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...
Reflecting back, this program has enriched my professional career, knowledge, and perspective of nursing in various ways. I believe I have developed advanced critical thinking and analytical skills, high EI based on learned knowledge, flexibility to accept change, and rational reasoning/knowledge to understand EBP and nursing research. The program offered me more than I had expected, in terms of knowledge, evaluation, analysis, synthesis, competency, and creativity. Each course and its innovative learning style (e.g., voice thread, youseeu, journal club, etc.) challenged, empowered, and motivated me to perform better, aim higher, and excel. Upon graduation, I intend to take a minimum six month break to enjoy quality family time and social life before embarking on a master
After a thorough and careful thought, I look forward to striving towards my goal by engaging in activities that will guide me through the course. I am currently working as a vocation nurse in a skilled nursing facility to oversee all the skilled nursing services including administration of medications, wound care, tube feedings, IV therapy, respiratory care, anticoagulant therapy, insulin administration and rehabilitative services. Despite all skills of nursing that I possess, the one that stands out most is engaging myself to help patients first above everything else. My vast experience in caring for the patients intrigued me to explore more on the drugs used to treat different diseases and offer extensive education and comfort care for all
I have nothing but great experiences with my clinical instructors, which inspired me to one day, fulfill that position for future nursing students. My instructors have demonstrated strong leadership with their communication skills, commitment to helping me learn, and acting as a role model. (Grossman & Valiga, 2017, pp. 28) With my aspiration to become a clinical instructor for students and then one day a nurse manager, I know that my areas of communication and confidence need improvement in order to work as a strong leader. Improving on my communication skills means being able to discuss difficult topics or disagreeing opinions with others in a professional manner.
The overall goals formulated were met. I was able to assess for suicide ideations and establish a verbal no suicide contract with the client. Additionally, I was able to detect effective coping mechanism utilized by the client. The client was enthusiastically willing to address all questions asked, making the interview process much more efficient and successful. Essentially the client showed gratitude, stating communicating with myself was a great outlet as it allowed her to express her emotions regarding her depression. Despite how slightly uncomfortable and nervous I felt interviewing clients with mental illnesses, the experience was great. Therapeutic communication techniques were utilized, allowing the focus to be on the clients emotional
. Most of my career has been in community nursing providing care in the patient’s home. This opportunity has allowed me to be a teacher and encourage health promotion. This can be very challenging due to issues with literacy and the patient’s readiness for change. This course has exposed me to the many different learning theories that have been developed and how to effectively assess the in order to develop and implement an effective teaching plan. Teaching strategies and plans must be specific to the learner and barriers need to be identified early so they can be overcome to promote better outcomes
This course opened my eyes to the importance of dialogue in ways that I had not previously considered. I did not know in counseling you should only talk 30 percent of the time and that the remaining 70 percent should be the counselee’s time to talk. My typical counseling sessions in the past were about 50/50 dialogue. I thought that the counselee needed my opinion. A majority of my sessions included this amount of dialogue, which I am now understanding was not helpful to those people. Even though several people did have great results due to our sessions, they will looked to me in the future for more answers to various problems. This made the counseling relationship more dependent on my advice rather than them talking out their problem
Being able to communicate effectively in a professional manner is vital in most, if not all, career paths. This statement brings up some important questions. Do potential employers really care about an applicant’s communication skills? How will I use communication skills in my own career? How has college improved my own professional communication skills? Understanding how to communicate in a professional manner can help people in their careers and I feel improving my own communication skills will benefit me now and in the future.
