Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. It also helps me to progress to a stable job that is solely concentrated on making a positive difference in someone’s life. For this reason, I would feel privileged to be accepted on to this course.

In that way, I see this course as an investment to my future. I am dedicated and committed to my work and I believe these to attributes are important for achieving high-quality care. I also have a history of medicine in the family, which is where my interest in nursing originally came from. This course interests me because it provides me with a degree BSc (Hons) and helps me play a vital role in the community. I have been gaining experience and knowledge for the last year on my health and social care extended diploma course. During this year of continuous learning, I found my passion that is to help others. I want to improve my knowledge further in this subject and adult nursing in my opinion is the best way to do that. This course primarily consists of coursework related tasks and I feel more confident in my ability to complete coursework to a high standard due to my health and social care course being 100% assignment based.
This course also has a large amount of time set aside for placements at different locations. I feel learning first hand in the nursing field give more of an impact because it shows you what skills you will need to learn as well as what the job involves. I found rugby to be an amazing experience as it showed me the importance of teamwork and dedication. It gave me the opportunity to travel and meet a lot of new people. This has helped me to socialise with people more easily allowing me to form strong relationships that mutually help others and myself. I have always enjoyed and participated in general water sports activities such as sailing and recently, paddle boarding. I enjoy self-improvement anywhere it can be applied, this includes fitness. Recently I have joined the gym in order to keep myself fit. I have a strong passion for music and was in a band for two years. skills. I have taken part in the health and social care extended diploma at Plymouth City College, which has given me a brilliant foundation of course related knowledge in which I can build upon. I already have knowledge of key subject within the nursing profession such as effective communication, equality, diversity and rights just to name a few. I have an A level in biology which relates to the anatomy and a physiology side of adult nursing. I have taken part in charity events to raise money for charities relating to the well-being of others. I did this by getting my legs waxed for donations and organising as well as managing a celebrity name based raffle. I was a student ambassador in which I help City College promote, organise, arrange and manage events that take place. I was responsible for setting a good image of the college. I have taken part in numerous placements that are all care related such as nursery, hospital and care home work with the majority of my time spend at a private health care hospital. The skills I acquired during this time on the different placements I attended are as follows: commercial awareness, teamwork negotiation, persuasion, problem solving, leadership, perseverance, motivation and confidence. As you can tell, I found my placement to be far more beneficial when learning transferable skills.

The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. To improve my understanding of maintaining my capability for practice as a RN, I set a goal to learn in depth from my classes, related units, and through interacting with my friends and tutors. I decided to take Guidance 30 because I wanted to make sure that nursing is the right major for me. I have a lot of hobbies, but I don’t want to do them as a job for the rest of my life. I knew that I want to work in a job that will allow me to communicate with other people and also help them. Since there were many jobs that allow a person to help others, I wanted to take this class to learn more about myself and my skills that I never considered as skills.

The term ‘mentor’ has many descriptions and definitions including teacher, guide, supporter and advisor (Thesaurus). Within nursing, the role of a mentor has changed over the years from an informal advisor to a mandatory requirement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for pre-registration nursing and midwifery students (NMC 2008). This change began when nurse education moved from hospitals to higher education institutions (HEIs) (Willis, 2012). The NMC definition of a mentor is “one who facilitates learning, and supervises and assesses students in a practice setting” (NMC, 2008, p.56) which does not really describe how complex the role is (Chandon and Watts, 2012). To formally mentor students, nurses today are required to complete mentorship training set out in eight competencies (domains) in the ‘Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice’ (NMC, 2008).
This vocational degree appeals to me as it will allow me to gain clinical experience in a range of settings, including primary care, specialist and intensive care areas in hospital wards. I have chosen to study children’s nursing but I am looking forward to work alongside students from all four fields of nursing to study generic material. The lifespan of humanity has increased drastically due to medicine and medical practices such as nursing, because of this, it is now vital that we ensure the health and well-being of our future generation. Being motivated, able to work under pressure and interact are fundamentals as working as a nurse may involve meeting new people each.
