To improve my understanding of maintaining my capability for practice as a RN, I set a goal to learn in depth from my classes, related units, and through interacting with my friends and tutors. There were many setbacks on the way, but as I became more acquainted with the matter I began understanding better. In this reflection I’ll use Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) to address my experiences as a student nurse in fulfilling the maintenance and capability for practice. Description Through tutorials, lectures and simulation classes every semester, our practice is enhanced and maintained so that the skills and knowledge we learnt is always nurtured while new ones are gained. As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. It may have been something you did differently that had a positive result and you may conclude you would do it again upon reflection. The most important part of reflection is making sense of situations and events that occur so that our decision making and any actions we take lead to good, effective practice. Nurses have to keep a record of their continued professional development. At annual reviews, nurses are able to present evidence of their development through a portfolio which should contain reflective accounts of their practice. These reflective accounts will help them identify strengths and weaknesses, highlight their performance, improve their skills and highlight any areas that could be developed.
This submission is going to focus on the nursing care that I gave on two placement simulations and one shift on placement, placing emphasis on oral care, bed bathing and medication management. It will outline the fundamental aspects of clinical nursing skills that have taken place in my setting. My clinical instructor assigned me to Mrs. Lee, who can only speak Cantonese. I began to feel like more of an asset to the team, rather than an observer. As I gained the confidence and ability to incorporate and integrate the knowledge that I was learning in class, I was able to develop the ability to deliver care on a higher competency level. This translated to higher quality care, safer practice and further incorporation of evidence-based practice into my care. As a result, my ability to advocate for my patients became more effective as I was able to formulate phone calls that were clear and concise as well as page multidisciplinary teams as necessary. During the summer student nurse externship experience at DHMC, I learned how to communicate effectively through progress notes and care plans.
A. Establishing a good rapport and communication with the patients and their families is a key component to nursing. I make sure that when treating my patients, this is one of the first things that I do. By letting my patients and their families know that I am there to help them in any way possible, allows me to not only better address my patients needs but also aids in helping the family with their needs as well. As I reflect on 2016 I am pleased with the result and progress made. Each goal set for 2016 as it relates to the key result areas of the Teleservices operation was obtained or just marginally below achievement, while others overachieved. Nursing students’ focus is on rule-based activities and application of theoretical knowledge learned in the school rather than patient management, what is important and not, what is needed and why (Koontz, Mallory, Burns & Chapman, 2010). If every nurse remembers some of their experiences throughout their clinical experiences the student nurses will never have to go through any of these experiences. One of my patients had been in the hospital for almost two weeks due to a diverticulitis colon abscess. After being told she would be discharged that day I arrived, the physician informed her that they’d be keeping her an additional day to further monitor the JP tube meant to drain the abscess. After being in the hospital for so long with very little opportunity to go outside and perform her regular activities, my patient seemed unmotivated and concerned. Consequently, during her physical assessment, I spoke to her in regards to her personal goals for the day.
