Regardless of the specialty, the main focus of a nurse includes assisting doctors in treating patients and providing clinical and emotional support to both patients and ancillary staff. With the role of administrative nursing supervisor comes additional responsibilities and administrative roles, such as staffing, organizing, prioritizing, and ultimately ensuring safe and quality patient care. My preceptor is an administrative nursing supervisor named Katie Smith, RN, BSN. An administrative supervisor must assure that the hospital operates in accordance with institution established guidelines as well as contractual requirements. Being at the apex of the chain of command, the administrative nursing supervisor has numerous responsibilities including but never limited to staffing, conflict resolution, and or crisis. In many circumstances, an administrative nursing supervisor must make timely, prioritizing decisions based on the resources available at any given time. The ultimate outcome ideally is patient and staff safety, and positive patient experiences and outcomes. Throughout the different departments in the facility, there are several governing unions with guidelines and contractual requirements. The facility also has policies and procedures that must be adhered to. Katie remains updated on all guidelines by attending conferences, in-services and administrative meetings. On my assigned unit in Napa State Hospital, there are a nursing supervisor and a nurse lead on my shift. The nursing supervisor will be sitting in her own office and working on things that are related to the unit except for the patient care; the nurse lead is the one that sit behind the nursing station and assign nurse staff to their daily duties and does not have to deal with management issues. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Adult nursing is a subject I am passionate about. In my opinion, there is nothing more important than the health, safety and security of one’s self and others. I aspire to achieve these attributes for individuals in everyday life and this course will help me to do so. I find helping people rewarding and adult nursing provides a professional platform to achieve this target. It also helps me to progress to a stable job that is solely concentrated on making a positive difference in someone’s life. For this reason, I would feel privileged to be accepted on to this course.
In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
The nursing profession has changed drastically over time. The roles and responsibilities that nurses take on have increased and become far more complicated. Nurses are managers, leaders, supervisors and have become experts in many areas of care. Every day nurses are faced with the task of improving and strengthening professional leadership within their work environment. Managing good quality and eliminating risk is the major challenge in health care. All members of the team must work together to accomplish outstanding patient care. Budget cuts and nursing shortage in all areas of health care leads to less licensed staff, where use of unlicensed personnel have been used widely, where delegation is not an option, but a necessity. Nurses must be aware of delegation guidelines, what tasks to delegate,when to delegate for the safety of patients, liability of nurses and the facility.

Also, the Nurse leader provides the link between management and the frontline staff who personally interact with the public and patients. They are the interface between management and care delivery, and can only be effective if they have the support, time, authority, and respect necessary to competently and visibly lead their teams on the delivery of high-quality care.
