On my assigned unit in Napa State Hospital, there are a nursing supervisor and a nurse lead on my shift. The nursing supervisor will be sitting in her own office and working on things that are related to the unit except for the patient care; the nurse lead is the one that sit behind the nursing station and assign nurse staff to their daily duties and does not have to deal with management issues. For example, the nursing supervisor will be participate on all types of meeting with the management from Napa State Hospital, she is also present on every staff hands off meeting, she also will be the one that is talking about what she had in plan for improvement for the unit and the patient care. The nurse lead would delegate nurses to work in the
treatment room, medication room, or provide patient care with the help of the psy- technician for that day at the beginning of the shift; then she will sit behind the nursing station to look at patient document and charting. There is a huge difference between the nursing supervisor and the nurse lead. On another word, the nursing supervisor is there to deal with bigger issues and management problem; but the nurse lead is there to manage the unit staff and the patient. One thing for sure, they are both there to ensure the safety of the patient and staff.

When delegating to staff or members of your team, it is important that it is used appropriately and within the proper guidelines. It is common to see RNs delegating in the hospital setting to the LVN or nursing assistant, however, the RN must know the limitations and what is within their scope of practice. Unfortunately, even if the nurse uses these guidelines, conflict can still occur with other staff making the process more difficult. I also work as a med-surg nurse, mainly with surgical patients with other medical conditions. I feel I have gained the most knowledge on this floor along with skills. I have remained on the same unit for the last 9 years because of the different experiences and patient outcomes related to the care given. While I do float to other units at times, I don't get the skill and assessment needs that I experience on my own unit. Having an understanding of the patient's care such as the cost of medications is truly a need in healthcare.
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate my reflection and understanding in the Role of the Mental Health Nurse in an episode of care supporting and promoting the recovery of service users. According to the National institute for Mental Health (2004) recovery is a process to restore something or return to a state of wellness, is an achievement of quality of life that is acceptable to the person (Ryan 2012).
In healthcare profession, leadership is defined as utilization of personal characteristics and experiences to communicate effectively with the patients suffering critical health problems for which there are no specific answers and to direct health care team in developing policies to solve these problems. The nurse leader establishes relationships to encourage others to set and accomplish clinical or administrative goals. The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
Leadership is an important role within the healthcare system, benefiting the interprofessional healthcare team and the registered nurses. AL-Dossary (2017) defines a leader as a person that other people will follow voluntarily or willingly. Leaders must also be educated on leadership, applying the skill in all aspects of their practice (Curtis, 2011).
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
The nursing profession has changed drastically over time. The roles and responsibilities that nurses take on have increased and become far more complicated. Nurses are managers, leaders, supervisors and have become experts in many areas of care. Every day nurses are faced with the task of improving and strengthening professional leadership within their work environment. Managing good quality and eliminating risk is the major challenge in health care. All members of the team must work together to accomplish outstanding patient care. Budget cuts and nursing shortage in all areas of health care leads to less licensed staff, where use of unlicensed personnel have been used widely, where delegation is not an option, but a necessity. Nurses must be aware of delegation guidelines, what tasks to delegate,when to delegate for the safety of patients, liability of nurses and the facility.
Manager and leader are often used interchangeable. They both have different distinctive features in the role that they play. Management is a problem oriented process whom coordinates the activities of the group to maintain balance and direction (Zerwekh & Claborn, 196). Leader on the other hand One nursing leader or manager that I could think of that satisfies the role of a nursing manager is a nursing supervisor that currently works at my job. She has been a nurse for over twenty years. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with the bachelors of Science in nursing and worked five years at St. Francis Hospital as a staff nurse on the cardiac floor. She then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she obtained her masters of science in advanced nurse practitioner at Chamberlain College. After ten years of service at the VA hospital as a nurse practitioner, she moved to Connecticut where she works as a nursing supervisor; she also held teaching positions at a few nursing schools, works at a doctor’s office and currently working on her doctoral degree. She is the nursing supervisor at my job for almost ten years. The job responsibilities include providing patient care as well as overseeing all nursing staff in the entire facility. Also, she ensures there are adequate nursing staff during the shift interacts with families and patients and works with other healthcare providers to solve any problems that arise during the shift. In addition to directing and supervising all aspect of patient care, she also collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to provide the most efficient care. The interdisciplinary course is a core requirement in the after-degree nursing program as it incorporates the principles of self-directed learning and promotes critical thinking, which is an essential element in nursing practice. As a final year nursing student, I believe that knowledge from this course will enhance my ability to provide patient-centered care.
Some people may like to be told specific tasks for them to follow while others would want to be told what outcomes or goals are they trying to achieve and then let them reach it there own way, but with your assistance, if needed. Members of the younger generation say they would rather be led, not managed. This means that they want to work alongside of a leader and develop a vision for them to achieve together. They like to work towards a mutual goal, but have the flexibility to achieve it however they like. In contrast the older generation like to be managed and delegated specific tasks to be completed to reach a goal. As Yoder-Wise explains in her text, “Managers address complex issues by planning, budgeting, and setting target goals. They meet their goals by organizing, staffing, controlling, and solving problems. By contrast, leaders set a direction, develop a vision, and communicate the new direction to the staff”(p.57, 2014) It gets more difficult when nurse leaders have both types of nurses on their unit. They must come up with ways to satisfy both working styles. They may do this by delegating certain tasks or patients to the nurses, but allowing them to complete each one however they wish. This way they have a goal to complete each task by the end of the shift, but have the freedom to complete it in whatever order they see
